They can happen at anytime, without warning, often resulting in significant loss of life. Department of Public Safety Assistant Chief Carolyn McDermed, said the University tries to prevent these kinds of situations from hap- pening in the first place. Dean of Students Paul Shang regularly meets with the Dean’s Council — consisting of representatives from the Counsel- ing and Testing Center, University Housing, and other student affairs groups — to identify at-risk students and make sure they’re getting the help they need. “We talk about students who are having trou- ble coping.
