Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Office of the Great Lakes December 2002 Report Number 2002-26 ABSTRACT Riparian ecosystems of the Great Lakes Basin influence the quality of the Great Lakes and provide habitat for many characteristic elements of biodiversity within the region Extensive human landscape modifications have dramatically changed the character of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in Michigan, especially in Lower Michigan, where riparian ecosystems are among the only remaining contiguously forested areas within highly fragmented landscapes The significance of these isolated riparian ecosystems for maintaining regional biodiversity in a highly fragmented landscape is not fully understood Historically, these areas have been poorly inventoried, and only a few elements of biodiversity are locally well known This study was initiated to gain a better understanding of the biodiversity refuge potential of riparian corridors within fragmented landscapes Our approach was unique in that we surveyed multiple elements of both terrestrial and aquatic communities, including plants, natural communities, breeding birds, amphibians and reptiles, and multiple aquatic taxa We used multivariate statistics to determine whether these community parameters were patterned among riparian corridors with varied levels of riparian forest width and connectivity Overall, the results of this study provided some support for the idea that biodiversity refuge potential of riparian corridors within fragmented landscapes can be predicted based solely on corridor width and contiguity, primairly with respect to terrestrial flora and some vertebrate groups However, aquatic community parameters were much more responsive to varied channel types than to riparian corridor widths Spatial analysis of land cover properties of local and upstream riparian buffer areas provided an additional level of correlation analysis for riparian community components and multi-scale environmental properties of landscapes These multi-spatial analyses identified some strong associations between community measures and upstream properties, suggesting that riparian biodiversity modeling and management may need to be conducted at larger spatial scales in order to be effective While the overall results of this study did not wholly support the sole use of riparian corridor width and contiguity as guiding factors for identifying riparian biodiversity potential in fragmented landscapes of southern Lower Michigan, further study that includes appropriate criteria for determining the integrity of streams with varied channel characteristics may lead to more definitive models of riparian biodiversity that do provide greater evidence for the use of riparian Changes in vegetation structure can alter the physical habitat structure, thermal environment, and food available to arthropods, which play an important role in the structure and functioning of Arctic ecosystems. Not only do they provide key ecosystem services such as pollination and nutrient cycling, they are an essential food source for migratory birds. In this study I examined the relationships between the abundance, diversity, and community composition of arthropods and the height and cover of several shrub species across a tundra-shrub gradient in northwestern Alaska. To characterize nestling diet of common passerines that occupy this gradient, I used next-generation sequencing of fecal matter. Willow cover was strongly and consistently associated with abundance and biomass of arthropods and significant shifts in arthropod community composition and diversity.

    Intro 1996 National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands The Fish and Wildlife Service has prepared a National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1996 National Summary (1996 National List). The 1996 National List is a draft revision of the National List of Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1988 National Summary (Reed 1988) (1988 National List). The 1996 National List is provided to encourage additional public review and comments on the draft regional wetland indicator assignments. The 1996 National List reflects a significant amount of new information that has become available since 1988 on the wetland affinity of vascular plants. This new information has resulted from the extensive use of the 1988 National List in the field by individuals involved in wetland and other resource inventories, wetland identification and delineation, and wetland research. Interim Regional Interagency Review Panel (Regional Panel) changes in indicator status as well as additions and deletions to the 1988 National List were documented in Regional supplements. The National List was originally developed as an appendix to the Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (Cowardin et al.1979) to aid in the consistent application of this classification system for wetlands in the field.. The 1996 National List also was developed to aid in determining the presence of hydrophytic vegetation in the Clean Water Act Section 404 wetland regulatory program and in the implementation of the swampbuster provisions of the Food Security Act. While not required by law or regulation, the Fish and Wildlife Service is making the 1996 National List available for review and comment.

Abstract Altogether 37 predatory mite species from 14 families (Parasitiformes and Acariformes) were collected using leaf sampling and pit-fall trapping in strawberry fi elds (1997 - 2001). Thirty- six were recorded on strawberries for the fi rst time in Latvia. Two species, Paragarmania mali (Oud.) (Aceosejidae) and Eugamasus crassitarsis (Hal.) (Parasitidae) were new for the fauna of Latvia. The most abundant predatory mite families (species) collected from strawberry leaves were Phytoseiidae (Amblyseius cucumeris Oud., A. aurescens A.-H., A. bicaudus Wainst., A. herbarius Wainst.) and Anystidae (Anystis baccarum L.); from pit-fall traps – Parasitidae (Poecilochirus necrophori Vitz. and Parasitus lunaris Berl.), Aceosejidae (Leioseius semiscissus Berl.) and Macrochelidae (Macrocheles glaber Müll). Introduction Predatory mites play an important ecological role in terrestrial ecosystems and they are increasingly being used in management for biocontrol of pest mites, thrips and nematodes (Easterbrook 1992; Wright, Chambers 1994; Croft et al. 1998; Cuthbertson et al. 2003). Many of these mites have a major infl uence on nutrient cycling, as they are predators on other arthropods (Santos 1985; Karg 1993; Koehler 1999). In total, investigations of mite fauna in Latvia were made by Grube (1859), who found 28 species, Eglītis (1954) – 50 species, Kuznetsov and Petrov (1984) – 85 species, Lapiņa (1988) – 207 species, and Salmane (2001) – 247 species.

More than 30 papers and posters were presented and much fruitful discussion occurred. An enjoyable field trip to the Colorado Rockies took place on Sunday, May 19th, and the weather was excellent. Boris was such a good host that it was difficult to leave, but many participants traveled to Santa Fe, New Mexico to attend the annual meetings of the North American Benthological Society. Bill Stark gave us a way to remember this meeting by producing a T-shirt with a unique “Spirit Fly” design. ANNOUNCEMENT 11th International Stonefly Symposium Stan Szczytko has planned and organized an excellent symposium that will be held at the Tree Haven Biological Station, University of Wisconsin in Tomahawk, Wisconsin, USA. ABSTRACT: The aims of the present paper are to establish the specific structure of communities of prostigmatic and mesostigmatic mites in nests of the semi-collared flycatcher (Ficedula semitorquata) and to compare the fauna with the mites in nests of two other European flycatchers. For analysis of community structure of mites were used the indices: prevalence, relative density, mean intensity and dominance. Mite communities are strongly dominated by the species Dermanyssus gallinae and Ornithonyssus sylviarum, which were found with the highest frequency and dominance. The mite communities are characterized by a large number of subrecedent species. KEYWORDS: Acariformes, Parasitiformes, Nest of Bird, Community Structure INTRODUCTION The nests of different species of birds are an example of a fairly unstable and isolated habitat, with its own dependent on it specific fauna which involves different groups of invertebrate animals. One of the components of this fauna which demonstrates particular abundance is the arthropods, and more specifically, the mites. The studies of Parasitiformes show that mesostigmatic mites living in birds' nests vary both in terms of their species affiliation and the structure of their communities [4, 8]. Highly important with respect to veterinary science and medicine are a number of species, such as Ornithonyssus bursa, Ornithonyssus sylviarum, Dermanyssus gallinae harboured by birds, Ornithonyssus bacoti, harboured by rodents, etc.

Adult caddisflies were collected with entomological nets and ultraviolet light traps during August and September 2018 in Leqinat Lake, Drelaj Lake and five adjacent streams in Bjeshkët e Nemuna in Kosovo. Within the current study we found three first records for the caddisfly fauna of Kosovo: Limnephilus flavospinosus, Limnephilus flavicornis and Oligotricha striata. The genus Oligotricha is reported for the first time from Kosovo. We also found few rare species which have been reported only from few localities in the Balkan Peninsula such as: Plectrocnemia mojkovacensis, Rhyacophila balcanica and Drusus tenellus.

The monotypic Taiwanese genus Mesoperla Klapálek, 1913 is redescribed on the basis of a male syntype specimen, and its affinities are re-evaluated. The single female type specimen of further two Oriental monotypic genera, Kalidasia Klapálek, 1914 and Nirvania Klapálek, 1914, are confirmed to be lost or destroyed respectively; both genera are considered as nomina dubia. The Sichuan endemic Acroneuria grahami Wu & Claassen, 1934 is redescribed on the basis of male holotype. Distinctive characters of the genus Brahmana Klapálek, 1914 consisting of five, inadequately known Oriental species are discussed. Flavoperla needhami (Klapálek, 1916) and Sinacroneuria sinica (Yang & Yang, 1998) comb. novae are suggested for an Indian species originally described in Gibosia Okamoto, 1912 and a Chinese species originally described in Acroneuria Pictet, 1841. At present, 62 species of Acroneuriinae, classified in 10 valid genera are reported from the Oriental Realm but 29 species are inadequately known. A key is presented to distinguish males of the Asian Acroneuriinae genera. Asian distribution of each genera are detailed and depicted on a map.

Accepted 23 December, 2010 Adult stoneflies (Plecoptera) were light-trapped monthl from January to December 2008 in Tupah River, Kedah, Malaysia. Two families of Plecoptera, Perlidae and Nemouridae were represented with nine species. More Plecoptera was collected in the wet seasons especially for the family Nemouridae. Neoperla asperata was a common species that occurred throughout the year. Neoperla fallax was equally common but this species was absent during early part of the year. The percentage of females was higher than male for all species of Plecoptera collected. Key words: Upstream river, Plecoptera, season, sex ratio, peninsular Malaysia. A cross- sectional survey was conducted in 7 ecosystems of southern Vietnam from 2015 to 2016. Chigger mites were identified with morphological characteristics and assayed by polymerase chain reaction for detection of rickettsiaceae. Overall chigger infestation among rodents was 23.38%. The chigger index among infested rodents was 19.37 and a mean abun- dance of 4.61. A total of 2,770 chigger mites were identified belonging to 6 species, 3 genera, and 1 family, and pooled into 141 pools (10-20 chiggers per pool). Two pools (1.4%) of the chiggers were positive for Orientia tsutsugamushi. Rick- etsia spp. was not detected in any pools of chiggers. Further studies are needed including a larger number and diverse hosts, and environmental factors to assess scrub typhus.
