TODAY’S GAME CAPITALS at SABRES • This is the second of three meetings between the Sabres and Capitals this season. • Last meeting: Buffalo defeated Washington 3-1 in Buffalo on Nov. 7, 2017 • Next meeting: Saturday, Feb. 24 in Washington • The Sabres are 3-5-2 in their last 10 games vs. the Capitals; 5-2-3 at home. • This is the 157th game all-time between Buffalo and Washington; Buffalo has an 88-48-20 series record. • The Sabres are 47-22-9 at home against the Capitals all-time.

THIS DATE IN SABRES HISTORY • The Sabres are 13-9-2 all-time on February 19. • February 19, 1984: Dave Andreychuk records his 100th NHL point and scores the 4,000th goal in franchise history in a 5-2 win vs. Hartford. • February 19, 1991: Christian Ruuttu scores the 6,000th goal in franchise history.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW • A win today would give the Sabres wins in consecutive meetings with the Capitals for the first time since Dec. 29, 2013 and Jan. 12, 2014. • The Sabres are also looking for consecutive home wins against Washington for the first time since they won both matchups in Buffalo in the 2011-12 season. • Kyle Okposo has six points (3+3) in his last six games against the Capitals. • Jason Pominville has seven points (3+4) in his last seven games against Washington. • Benoit Pouliot has five points (4+1) in his last five games against the Capitals. • Evander Kane has six career two-point games against Washington. • Rasmus Ristolainen had an assist in three of four meetings with the Capitals last season.

WHO’S HOT? • Ryan O’Reilly has recorded 18 points (9+9) in his last 18 games. • Sam Reinhart has totaled 16 points (6+10) in his last 15 games. • Rasmus Ristolainen has 18 points (4+13) in his last 22 games dating back to Dec. 29. Ristolainen’s 18 points during that span tied for fourth among NHL defensemen entering play Sunday. • Kyle Okposo has recorded 16 points (3+13) in his last 17 games, including four multi-point games.

HOT AT HOME • Kyle Okposo has totaled 14 points (2+12) in his last 15 home games, including three multi-point home games in the month of January. • Ryan O’Reilly has 14 points (6+8) in 12 home games dating back to the team’s game on Dec. 22 vs. Philadelphia. • Sam Reinhart has totaled nine points (4+5) in his last eight home games. • Rasmus Ristolainen has tallied a point in each of his last four home games (1+3).

PLAYING WITH POWER • The Sabres have tallied at least one power-play goal in 12 of their last 18 games dating back to Jan. 7 at Philadelphia (and went 0- for-0 on Jan. 11 vs. Columbus), converting at a 30.8 percent clip during that span. • Buffalo’s power-play percentage during this stretch led the league entering play Sunday, as did the team’s 16 power-play goals. • During that stretch, the Sabres have five players with at least seven power-play points. • Ryan O’Reilly led the league entering play Sunday with seven power-play goals scored since Jan. 7. Kyle Okposo tied for the league lead with 10 power-play points during that stretch. • O’Reilly has taken 73.8 percent of the team’s power-play faceoffs during that span, going 52-for-76 (68.4%). • O’Reilly’s 11 power-play goals this season ranked fourth in the league entering play Sunday.

DANGEROUS KILLERS • The Sabres scored two shorthanded goals last Sunday vs. , marking the second time this season the team has scored two shorthanded goals in a game (last: Oct. 7 at NY Islanders). • Buffalo entered play Sunday tied for the league lead with nine shorthanded goals this season, the team’s highest total since the 2007-08 season (9). • Entering play Sunday, the Sabres were the only team with three players who have scored at least two shorthanded goals this season (Kane - 3, Girgensons - 2, Pouliot - 2). • Ryan O’Reilly’s four shorthanded assists led the league entering Sunday’s games, and his four shorthanded points tied for second.

DRAWING ATTENTION* • Ryan O’Reilly went 29-for-39 (74.4%) on the draw last Sunday vs. Colorado. The 29 wins set a new career-high mark for O’Reilly, topping his previous high of 26 (Feb. 8 vs. St. Louis). He now holds the nine highest single-game totals in franchise history. • O’Reilly, who leads the NHL in faceoffs won (885) and faceoff percentage (61.0%) this season, is climbing the single-season record books as well. His 885 wins already rank as the sixth-most wins by a Sabre in a season and are on pace to become the second-most by any NHL player in a season: • Rod Brind’Amour (CAR), 2005-06 – 1,268 • Ryan O’Reilly *pace* (BUF), 2017-18 – 1,236 • Adam Oates (WSH), 1999-00 – 1,235 • Rod Brind’Amour (CAR), 2001-02 – 1,218 • Joe Sakic (COL), 2000-01 – 1,214 • At his current pace, O’Reilly would become just the third player ever to win at least 1,000 faceoffs in a season while maintaining a faceoff percentage of at least 59 percent, joining Rod Brind-Amour (five times) and (two times). *The NHL began keeping faceoff stats in the 1997-98 season.

Housley joined the Sabres after helping to guide the Nashville Predators to their first ever Final appearance in 2016. Named an assistant coach on May 22, 2013, Housley was a driving force behind one of the NHL’s best defensive groups throughout his tenure.

A native of South St. Paul, Minnesota, Housley began his coaching career in 2004 as head coach of Stillwater Area High School in Minnesota. NOTE OF THE NIGHT

Grubauer Power - In his last 16 appearances, which dates back to his 36-save effort against the Calgary Flames on Oct. 29, Philipp Grubauer is 5-5-2 with a 2.14 goals against average and a .931 save percentage, which is the fifth-lowest goals against average and the fourth-highest save percentage among goaltenders with at least 15 appearances during that time frame. Additionally, Grubauer's .947 save percentage at even strength during that time frame ranks first among goaltenders with at least five appearances since Oct. 29. In 86 career games with the Capitals, Grubauer has a 2.35 goals against average and a .921 save percentage. Additionally, Grubauer recorded an assist on Feb. 15 against the Minnesota Wild, his first assist of his career and the first Capitals goaltender to record an assist since Braden Holtby on March 18, 2016 (4-1 win versus the Nashville Predators).

TOP FIVE CAPS FACTS Willy Style - Tom Wilson recorded his 10th goal of the season on Saturday night against the Chicago Blackhawks, reaching a new career high. Wilson now has three goals in his last two games. Additionally, Wilson’s 27 points (10g, 17a) is a new single-season high, besting his previous high of 23 points (7g, 16a) in 28-fewer games. Among players drafted in 2012, Wilson's 367 career games rank second (: 394 games). This season, Wilson’s 51.05 shot attempt percentage (705 for, 676 against) at five-on-five ranks third among Capitals forwards. Additionally, Wilson has 26 drawn penalties this season, the sixth-most in the NHL. Since the 2013-14 season, Wilson has drawn 167 minor penalties, the second-most in the NHL during that span (Nazem Kadri: 199), and his 2.31 drawn penalties per 60 minutes of play ranks first among all skaters with at least 150 games played since the 2013-14 season.

Buffalo Hunters - The Capitals have earned a point in 24 of their last 31 games against the Sabres (20-7-4) and in six of their last eight on the road against Buffalo (5-2-1). Alex Ovechkin has earned 43 points (27g, 16a) in 43 career games against the Sabres and has earned 11 points (7g, 4a) in his last 11 games against Buffalo. Nicklas Backstrom has recorded 28 points (8g, 20a) in 35 games career games against the Sabres. Philipp Grubauer is 2-1-2 against the Sabres with a 1.23 goals against average and a .954 save percentage.

Great 8 - Alex Ovechkin leads the NHL in goals (34) through games played Feb. 17 and the Capitals in points (65p, 34g, 31a). Ovechkin became the 61st player in NHL history to reach the 1,100-point milestone, reaching the feat in his 978th career game on Feb. 15 against the Minnesota Wild with a four point effort (1g, 3a). Only 23 players required fewer games to accumulate 1,100 career points, with Jaromir Jagr (825 games, played on Nov. 30, 2001 as a member of the Capitals) the last to hit the mark in less than 1,000 games. Additionally, Ovechkin, who on Jan. 11, 2017, became the lone Capitals player to compile 1,000 career points (880 GP), became the 26th player in NHL history to require fewer than 100 contests to move from 1,000 to 1,100 (98 GP). Ovechkin is the only player to reach the 1,100 point mark that made his NHL debut in this millennium (NHL debut: Oct. 5, 2005). Ovechkin is also on pace for 91 points this season, which would be his highest total since the 2009-10 season (109 points, 50g, 59a). Additionally, it would be the first time he's averaged over a point per game in a season since the 2013-14 season, when he recorded 79 points (51g, 28a) in 78 games. Ovechkin is looking to record his eighth 50-goal season of his career. Only Mike Bossy and Wayne Gretzky have more 50-goal seasons, each with nine. No other player has at least seven. Ovechkin sits at 592 career goals, and if he scores eight goals within his next 20 games, he could become the fourth player in NHL history to record 600 career goals in under 1,000 games.

Fire Away Nicky - Nicklas Backstrom has five goals in his last seven games. That marks the most goals he's had in a seven-game stretch since scoring seven goals in six games from Dec. 12 through Dec. 26, 2009. Backstrom's 773 career points (203g, 570a) rank first among the 2006 NHL Draft class, leading Phil Kessel by 58 points, who ranks second through games played Feb. 17. Since entering the NHL in the 2007 season, Backstrom’s 570 assists rank third (: 589; Joe Thornton: 581) in the NHL. With 570 career assists, Backstrom is now tied with Shane Doan (570 assists in 1,540 games) and Frank Mahovlich (570 assists in 1,181 games played) for 100th on the NHL's all-time assist list. Tonight's game marks Backstrom's 791st- career game.

1,500 for Coach Trotz - Barry Trotz coached his 1,500th career game on Feb. 17 against the Chicago Blackhawks. Trotz's first career game came on Oct. 10, 1998, the first ever game for the Nashville Predators (1-0 loss to the Florida Panthers). On Dec. 30 against the New Jersey Devils, Trotz earned his 737th career win, passing Lindy Ruff for fifth on the NHL's all-time coaching wins list. Trotz has posted a record of 189-81-34 since joining the Capitals in the 2014-15 season. During that span, Washington ranks first in cumulative wins (189), points (412), goals (925), power play percentage (22.9) and second in goals against (740). Trotz's 1,500 games rank fifth on the all-time list and third among active coaches behind Joel Quenneville (Chicago) and (Dallas). Trotz has posted a career NHL record of 746-560-60-134.
