Higgins’ dance suite Tänze will be performed by 70 of London Music Masters Learning students aged 9-11 and the London Philharmonic Orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall. This free event precedes pianist and LMM Ambassador Benjamin Grosvenor’s concert with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major, marking his first time performing with them in London. Higgins’ large scale, innovative new work will explore the history of dance music from the Baroque period to the present day. Higgins explains: “Tänze is a new work inspired by the Baroque dance suite. As such the piece is made up of the four dances most commonly utilised; Allemande, Courante, Sarabande and a lively Gigue. Dance music has always been very important to me and I’ve been wanting to write a ‘dance suite’ for some time now. When I was approached by LMM to write this piece I felt this was the opportunity to do just that. -

Symposium Richard Wagner and his successors in the Austro-German conducting tradition Friday/Saturday, 2/3 November 2018 Bern University of the Arts, Papiermühlestr. 13a/d A symposium of the Research Area Interpretation – Bern University of the Arts, in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Music, London www.hkb-interpretation.ch/annotated-scores Richard Wagner published the first major treatise on conducting and interpretation in 1869. His ideas on how to interpret the core Classical and early Romantic orchestral repertoire were declared the benchmark by subsequent generations of conductors, making him the originator of a conducting tradition by which those who came after him defined their art – starting with Wagner’s student Hans von Bülow and progressing from him to Arthur Nikisch, Felix Weingartner, Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, Wilhelm Furtwängler and beyond. This conference will bring together leading experts in the research field in question. A workshop and concert with an orchestra with students of the Bern University of the Arts, the Hochschule Luzern – Music and the Royal Academy of Music London, directed by Prof. Ray Holden from the project partner, the Royal Academy of Music, will offer a practical perspective on the interpretation history of the Classical repertoire. For immediate release Paul Weller with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Jules Buckley concert date added to ‘Live from the Barbican’ line-up in spring 2021 Barbican Hall, Saturday 6 February 2021, 8pm The Barbican and Barbican Associate Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra are excited to announce that the orchestra and its Creative Artist in Association Jules Buckley, will be joined by legendary singer songwriter Paul Weller on Saturday 6 February for a concert reimagining Weller’s work in stunning orchestral settings as part of Live from the Barbican in 2021. In Weller’s first live performance for two years, songs spanning the broad spectrum of his career from The Jam to as yet unheard new material will delight fans and newcomers alike. Classic songs including ‘You Do Something to Me’, ‘English Rose’ and ‘Wild Wood’ along with tracks from Weller’s latest number 1 album ‘On Sunset’ will be heard as never before in brand new orchestral arrangements by Buckley. Weller, who takes cultural authenticity to the top of the charts, reunites with Steve Cradock for this one-off performance. Part of the acclaimed Live from the Barbican series which returns to the Centre in the spring, the concert will have a reduced, socially distanced live audience in the Barbican Hall, and it will also be available to watch globally via a livestream on the Barbican website. Whilst the concert will reflect on some of Weller’s back catalogue, as is typical of his constantly evolving career, it will look to the future with performances of songs from an album not released until May 2021, as well as welcoming guest artists to illustrate his work and the music that influenced him. -

Copyright Yvonne Chen 2019 Yvonne Chen: Lutosławski’s Piano Concerto ii ABSTRACT Lutosławski’s Piano Concerto by Yvonne Chen This document is a comprehensive study of Witold Lutoslawski’s Piano Concerto (1987-88), a masterpiece of the post-modern era. A biographical look into Lutoslawski’s fifty year gestation with the ideas for the music shows the inspirations, genesis, and processes of materials used in the piece, which straddles tradition and modernity in refreshing ways. An analysis of the work clarifies the many points of inspiration – from the pianism of Chopin to the woodwind timbres of Stravinsky, and his use of ad libitum sections to support his pragmatic approach to notation or his development of “chain form.” Following Lutoslawski’s ideas about music perception, this document includes performance observations from recordings including those by the work’s dedicatee and the composer himself. Finally, I provide a practical guide for pianists to discern and approach the technical and musical difficulties of the piece in Part Four. THE LULLABY CONCERTS 2009–2018 AN OVERVIEW OF THE LULLABY CONCERTS Orchestras Live developed the Lullaby concert series in partnership with City of London Sinfonia, as a response to the need for Early Years music making opportunities in rural and culturally undeserved areas in the east of England. Our aim was to develop inspiring, interactive and relevant ways to engage very young children (aged up to 7 years) in first-time experiences of live orchestral music. This included a long-term approach to artistic exploration with our creative partners, responding to the needs and priorities of the communities where the work was based. Evolving from a series of pilot projects started in 2003, the Lullaby concerts reached over 20,000 young children and their families in Suffolk and Essex over 10 years. For many this was their first experience of live orchestral music, and these encounters have often inspired children to take up an instrument or other creative activity, as well as encouraging families to experience more live music together. Each year the concert series, performed by City of London Sinfonia and led by presenter Claire Henry, engaged children through vivid worlds such as animals, forests and science; telling musical stories through everyday themes. After each concert the children in the audience had a chance to try orchestral instruments, supported by professional players and tutors. Over the 10 years the programme involved 727 Early Years practitioners in a CPD training development strand linked to the Lullaby concerts; the Lullaby artistic team shared appropriate skills and ideas which practitioners could take back and use in their nursery settings. -

Après des études de sciences naturelles, de psychologie expérimentale et de neuropsychologie, il se tourne vers la musique. Ses premiers sujets d’études marquent particulièrement ses créations. Il rejoint la Royal Academy of Music et devient l’élève de Philip Cashian. Il collabore entre autres avec Douglas Gordon et David Hoyle. Sa carrière marque un tournant dans la création musicale britannique, en étant le premier à adapter la pièce de Sarah Kane, 4.48 Psychosis au Lyric Theatre Hammersmith de Londre en 2016. Il obtient le prix UK Theatre Award en 2016 ainsi que celui de la Royal Philharmonic Society en 2017. Il devient associé de la Royal Academy of Music en 2016, et vie actuellement à Berlin.
