Laqueur, Co-chair Jonathan Sheehan, Co-chair This is the story of how German writers, scholars, bureaucrats and custodians of art at all levels witnessed and participated in the French despoliations of European art collections over the course of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, and how in the aftermath of these events they developed new ideas about the place and purpose of art in modern cultural and political life at the beginning of the nineteenth century. In this period German scholars were forming new theories about the autonomy of art and its ability to remake the social and political order. At the same time they were gaining unprecedented experience of art’s material fragility and its dependence on the contingencies of the environment and good will of human actors. This dissertation argues that the tension between the twin discoveries of art’s powers and its limitations defined the cultural politics of the Prussian state during this revolutionary era. This dissertation begins with the looting of Italian and German art collections by French officials from 1794-1807, and investigates Germans’ confrontation with the vulnerability of the objects thought to be the source of ideal beauty in the world to material displacement in the tumult of military conflict and occupation. The second chapter turns to the German reaction to the museum founded in 1793 in the Palace of the Louvre in which the collections won through battle were exhibited to a broad and international public. In the face of the brilliance and innovativeness of this museum, German visitors rethought their repulsion to the despoliations and articulated new visions for the methods and contexts under which art could be known and appreciated. The silence of art and the difficulty of getting it off its pedestal is the subject of the third chapter, which takes up the challenges for Prussian delegates of identifying, reclaiming, and returning looted artworks to German cities and towns after the fall of the Napoleonic regime. The last two chapters are about the promise, forwarded by aesthetic theorists and cultural administrators, that once back in German custody, looted art objects would achieve new vitality, becoming vibrant participants in the cultural life of the state. In Prussia this achievement was to be secured by the establishment of a centralized public museum of art, an institution that hoped to abandon the chaotic, limited, dangerous, and frustratingly silent material basis of art in favor of a realm of pure ideal aesthetic experience. “To the Vandals they are stone!” Schiller wrote of the antiquities in Paris, expressing the desire not only to transcend the object but to cordon off art’s materiality as the domain of those unable to experience its true spiritual charge. The 1 assessment, however, both enlightens and deceives. Indeed, to the Vandals they were stone—the various transgressions against art objects which we will encounter in the following could not be conceived as such without the bottom line of art's materiality. To be an object in this period was a deeply vulnerable proposition. At the same time, however, the object was not only the purview of the victor, but also the ultimate concern of the vanquished. The problem and, I will argue, fundamental impossibility of escaping from this truth—of making stone transform into something beyond itself—became in this moment the defining paradox of the museum of art in the nineteenth century. This article examines the contributions of its curator, Natalia Erenburg, and the project’s instiga- tor, Iakov Tugendkhold, who wrote the catalogue essay and headed the committee— both of whom were artists who became critics, historians, and collectors. The article elucidates the show’s rationale and selection of exhibits, the critical response to it and its legacy. It also discusses the artistic circles of Russian Paris in which the project origi- nated, particularly the Académie russe. It explores a number of trajectories embarked upon by Boydell and his artists in their collective attempt to promote an English aesthetic. It broadly argues that the Shakespeare Gallery offered an antidote to a variety of perceived problems which had emerged at the Royal Academy over the previous twenty years, defining itself against Academic theory and practice. Identifying and examining the cluster of spatial, ideological and aesthetic concerns which characterised the Shakespeare Gallery, my research suggests that the Gallery promoted a vision for a national art form which corresponded to contemporary senses of English cultural and political identity, and takes issue with current art-historical perceptions about the 'failure' of Boydell's scheme. The introduction maps out some of the existing scholarship in this area and exposes the gaps which art historians have previously left in our understanding of the Shakespeare Gallery.

The Grand Tour was a journey for every budding intellectual. Due to its financial commitment, however, it was predominantly undertaken by gentlemen of means as an additional scholastic process that also accentuated aspects of travelling abroad. An important accolade for those who were to achieve success in later life. Although not all benefited from the experience, it was broadly satisfactory for most. Protestant northern Europeans participated, later joined by north and south Americans. British participants, however, proved to be the most enthusiastic. The Grand Tour’s first destination was Paris, where a number of fine art collections could be viewed. In this respect, Louvre—originally built as a fortress—was prominent. The first exhibition of the renowned Paris Salon was held in its Grande Galerie. The city’s architectural styles included the Tuileries Palace and the Palais-Royal. King’s Library, the Bibliothèque Nationale, also generated interest. Grande Galerie Page 1 of 3 The Medieval Period's arts and architecture – predating the Renaissance – can at times be outlined within specific European – wide geographies. Gothic or earlier developments later classified as Romanesque, for example, fall into this category. In contrast, the developments of this period gathered only limited interest during the Grand Tour, as that period was not in focus. Nevertheless, within this category, it is apt to mention Notre- Dame of Paris – the most revered construction of the city – was and remains an outstanding example of Gothic architecture.

Vietnamese Art in Paris in the 1930s–40s PHOEBE SCOTT Abstract From their earliest graduating classes, Vietnamese artists from the École des Beaux-Arts de l’Indochine, Hanoi, had their work exhibited and sold in Paris. Ini- tially, it was predominantly Vietnamese artworks that travelled to Paris, however, the late 1930s also saw the establishment of a small group of Vietnamese artists there. While there has been considerable interest in the place of foreign artists in interwar Paris, the experience of Vietnamese artists has yet to be integrated into these histories. Vietnamese modern art was shown in the immensely popular spectacle of the Exposition Internationale Coloniale of 1931, a peak expression of colonial propaganda. It was also circulated through salon exhibitions, covered in the critical press, and even acquired by the state. This was in the context of heated debates in 1930s Paris over the status of foreign artists within French modernism. This essay assesses the reception and context of Vietnamese artworks that were sent to Paris or produced there. Rather than positioning Paris as a site of influence and authority, Paris emerges in this account as a site in which more complex negotiations took place, as artists navigated a loaded politics of display.

Voici plus d’un siècle que le pavillon de Flore et le pavillon de Marsan se font face, sans avoir été construits dans ce but, – sujet difficile mais exaltant, car j’ai l’impression de m’aventurer avec vous, sans jalons, sur un terrain oublié, sorti des mémoires et des consciences. Je vais traiter le sujet en trois parties : ce qu’étaient les Tuileries, ce que l’on peut faire, ce qu’il en résulterait. Ce qu’étaient les Tuileries Trois siècles de perséverance – La rémanence De nos jours, dans l’acception courante, le mot Louvre évoque un musée et le mot Tuileries un jardin. Cela prouve que quelque chose ne va pas quelque part. Le palais du Louvre, merveilleux écrin du musée, est un peu oublié et le palais des Tuileries en est inséparable. Ils sont le résultat de trois siècles de persévérance, à l’image de la France qui, précisément pendant le même temps, prit sa configuration et sa personnalité contemporaines. Les noms de Philibert de l’Orme, Bullant, du Cerceau, Louis Le Vau, Percier et Fontaine, Visconti et Lefuel, sont inséparables du palais des Tuileries, même si leur œuvre échappe à nos regards. Comment oublier aussi que Soufflot et Gabriel y procédèrent aux aménagements néces- saires pour que l’Opéra s’y installe et donne ses représentations de 1764 à 1770, puis la Comédie- Française de 1770 à 1782 ? C’est aux Tuileries que Beaumarchais créa son Barbier de Séville en 1775, et qu’en 1778, Mozart, alors âgé de 22 ans, y créa sa symphonie no 31 dite Parisienne.
