1. Introduction This 3rd workshop on Sprint & Speed supported by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) was held in Montreal from November 21st to November 25th 2018 and organized by the International Support Program to African and Caribbean Sport (PAISAC) in partnership with the Jamaican Olympic Association and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and in collaboration with the Québec Athletic Federation and McGill Athletics Center.

In Fall 2016, the first edition of Sprint & Speed was held in Montreal for 4 days. A great participation of 27 coaches attended the workshop. The extremely positive evaluation of the workshop from all participants has resulted to the organisation of the 2nd edition in 2017. The second edition welcomed 17 coaches and offered a mainly practical Sprint session during 4 days. After this second edition and the feedback received, together with the two Jamaican lecturers we decided to organise for the 3rd edition a training camp where the coaches would be invited to film and take notes in order to be able to transfer the content of the training session directly in their clubs.

The third edition held in 2018 offered therefore a training camp with more than 30 athletes from Montreal and Ontario attending it during 5 days and 14 coaches present to observe the sessions.

We were therefore pleased to welcome again Mr Michael McIntosh and Mr Okeile Stewart from Jamaica that gave during those five days sprint training sessions on the McGill University track. Three theoretical sessions were as well offered during those five days, one of them held by a lecturer from the National Quebec Sport Institute, Mr Cory Kennedy specialised in different method for speed calculation. (see Annexe B, p.8) The logistic of the workshop was taken over by PAISAC with support from the Québec Athletic Federation for the promotion and the pleasure to held once more this 3rd edition in the amazing facilities from McGill Training Athletic Center. The Golden Phenix club form Montreal contributed to the promotion and was present for the five days with several of its athletes.

2. Seminar Objectives & Outline (See Annexe A, p.7) THE SEMINAR MAIN OBJECTIVES WERE: 1. To expose participants in a practical way to Jamaica training techniques instructed and introduced through illustrative examples and physical movements. 2. Understand basic fundamentals of Developing a Training Program for an athlete or team with specific goals to be achieved. 3. Show participants to appreciate what resources are available and not to worry about resources that are not 4. Re-emphasis foundation principles that are key to the success of any program 5. Sometimes little is more (Follow the body as your guide) 6. To achieve different results you have to do something different

3. Participants COACHES PARTICIPATION The workshop was organised in the frame of our 32nd training session (Fall 2018). All our National Olympic Committees (NOC) partners were informed during the scholarship coaches registration period that our 32nd training session will be headlined by a sprint specific workshop, encouraging them to select a track and field coach. Among our eight (8) scholarship coaches, three (3) of them were athletics coaches, Hydiane Simmons from Trinidade, Ricardo Suzette from the Seychelles & Lansford Spence from Jamaica. The promotion for this workshop was also made to the canadian coaches (from Québec and Ontario), we were helped for this by the Québec Athletic Federation and Athletics Canada that promoted the workshop on their webside.

In total 14 coaches took part into this workshop: PAISAC’s eight (8) scholarship coaches, five (5) Quebec and one (1) Ontario track & field coaches.

ATHLETES PARTICIPATION We had 32 athletes participating in the 5 days training camp. Twenty-three (27) were from Montreal’s Track Clubs and from McGill Track Team, five (5) came all the way from Ontario. The age range was between 11 and 22 years old boys and girls athletes.

4. Conduct of the workshop From Wednesday November 21st to Friday November 23rd 2018 the training Camp was held from 5.30pm to 8.30pm offering a specific training for short sprint and long sprint specialists, athletes and coaches.

On the week-end, Saturday November 24th and Sunday November 25th, the workshop was held from 9am until 4pm. The 3 hours afternoon sessions were the continuity of the short and long sprint training sessions from the previous days. The two mornings started with a 90mn training session for young athletes were the basic drills were presented and each day a 1h30 theoretical session was presented, on Saturday was presented by a Canadian expert: From the Lab to the Track: use of technology in coaching sprints and on Sunday was presented a theoretical performance planning session by our Jamaican experts.

During those 5 days of training camp the participants were very engaged and willing to learn the maximum from the large experience of the three (3) lecturers. The two coffee breaks each day were also an appreciated moment, were personal questions, added information could be asked, the lecturers were very open and generous with the sharing of their experiences. The workshop ended with a brief closing ceremony during

Workshop Sprint & Speed III Page 4 November 2018, Montreal-Canada which PAISAC and all the participants expressed their gratitude to the lecturers and to the Jamaican Olympic Association.

5. Workshop Evaluation (See Annexe – p.9)

The workshop was appreciated, in terms of level of appreciation. Please find the summary of it here:

Appreciation of the organisation - content: Appreciation Level : 30% a lot and 70% and extremely.

Appreciation of the lecturers: Appreciation Level : 15% a lot and 85% and extremely

Expectations reached: Expectation level reached: 15% average, 35% a lot and 50% and extremely

This first workshop showed over 95% of appreciation between a lot and extremely which is extremely satisfying. In view of the comments in the evaluation forms and in person, the lecturers were extremely appreciated. We didn’t ask the athletes participant to evaluate the training session but in regard to the comments made during the five days and the level of participation we know for a fact that they really appreciated the experience and learned a lot. Several athletes planned at first to only attend the 3 first days of the camp, but all decided to stay for the five days after the first session, which shows the appreciation of the content!

6. Funding The major part of the Seminar was funded by PAISAC, it included the travelling, hotel and salary of the lecturers, as well as the logistic expenses for the holding of the workshop (classroom and gym rental, copies etc). Part of the workshop was funded by the registration fees from our athletes and coach participants.

7. Conclusion and thanks This third workshop Sprint & Speed held by Jamaican and Canadian Sprint Specialists was a success in the face of the rich exchanges and enthusiasm of the thirt-two (32) athletes participants and fourteen (14) coaches present. The rich knowledge, large experience and generosity of the three (3) lecturers was highly appreciated by all. Three (3) coaches among the fourteen (14) present attended also the 1st edition in 2016 and the 2nd edition in 2017. They really enjoyed the highly practical content with the participation of the athletes of this 3rd edition that gave them useful tools for their practice. The participation of the 32 athletes was an extraordinary experience for all. The age difference and level difference of the athletes present was very well managed by our lecturer, they requested the help of our national team scholarship coaches from Trinidade and Jamaica and split the atheltes in three (3) groups in order to offer to each of them a pertinent content. The workshop participant really appreciated this experience too that gave them the chance to observe, film and take notes of the practice while the lecturers and the athletes were active on the track.

We plan to offer a 4th and last Sprint & Speed workshop that would be held in . We have indeed noticed that the language barrier stopped several Quebecois coaches to attend the workshop entirely held in English. Therefore moving the workshop to Toronto would not only make it easier to all local coaches to attend since English will be their first language but also give the chance to a new Canadian Province to benefit from this rich Jamaican- Canadian share of knowledge. This 4th workshop is planned to be organised in collaboration with Athletics Canada and the Canadian Olympic Association. Once the content will be finalised we will present it to those two Canadian sport entities and seek for their collaboration.

This third edition 2018 of the Sprint & Speed workshop was again a rich and highly appreciated share of knowledge between Jamaican and Canadian coaches and athletes, we are extremely pleased about this precious collaboration and are looking forward for a continued partnership with the Jamaican Olympic Association.
