Indianapolis’ hopes of qualifying for the post-season for a second straight year fell short after the club was officially eliminated in the second-to-last game of the year. Despite not qualifying for the playoffs, the Indians posted a 73-67 record under the direction of manager Brian Esposito while finishing a 0.5-game behind the front-running Toledo Mudhens in the West Division of the International League. Five members of the team (Christopher Bostick, Kevin Newman, Ryan Lavarnway, Dovydas Neverauskas and Tyler Eppler) were named to the International League’s mid-season All-Star team, while both Newman and Kevin Kramer went on to collect post-season All-Star accolades for the league. The Indians had several players with strong seasons who were eventually promoted to the big leagues along with others who made the jump from -A and continued their development at the Triple-A level. Former first round pick made his MLB debut in mid-May and went on to take home National League Rookie-of-the-Month accolades in his first month in the big leagues. Kramer, Newman and Pablo Reyes finished third, fourth and eighth respectively in the International League in hitting before eventually receiving late-season promotions to the big leagues. Jose Osuna was named the International League’s Player-of-the-Month for April while also having multiple stints with the Pirates throughout the season. Indianapolis’ pitching staff posted a league-leading 15 shutouts under the direction of pitching Stan Kyles. J.T. Brubaker, who was named the organization’s Minor League Pitcher-of-the-Year, finished seventh among the league leaders with a 3.10 ERA after being promoted from Altoona earlier in the season. Number one prospect Mitch Keller had his first exposure to Triple-A and improved as the season went along while also receiving the honor of starting in the All-Star Futures Game at Nationals Park. Tyler Eppler finished second in the league with 13 wins and 10th in ERA while also ranking sixth overall in . Bradenton posted an overall record of 56-74 under second-year manager Gera Alvarez. The Marauders finished in third place in the South Division with a record of 35-30 in the first half of the season before going 21-44 in the second half. Bradenton’s strong start to the season resultd in four members of the team (Arden Pabst, Alfredo Reyes, Matt Eckelman and Eduardo Vera) being named to the ’s mid-season All-Star team. The highlight of the 2018 campaign came on June 24 at LECOM Park when Oddy Nunez tossed the first no-hitter (8.0 innings) in the nine-year history of the Marauders against Fort Myers. In addition to Nunez’ no-no, several other members of the Marauders pitching staff posted impressive numbers throughout the 2018 campaign. James Marvel ranked seventh among all Florida State League pitchers in ERA, fourth among starters in batting average against (.258) and fourth overall in WHIP (1.21) while pacing the Marauders staff with nine wins. All-Star Matt Eckelman had a team-leading six saves while going 4-0 in relief before being promoted to Altoona on June 29. Scooter Hightower also was promoted to Double-A after posting a 1.47 ERA and 0.88 WHIP in his 18 outings out of the bullpen with Bradenton. Infielder Hunter Owen ranked third among the league leaders in slugging, fourth in extra base hits (42) and fifth in total bases (186) and OPS (.781). Owen’s 18 home runs were also tied for the fourth-most in the league and the second-most in a single season in Marauders history behind Quincy Latimore’s 19 from 2010. Jared Oliva spent the entire season with the Marauders and finished 10th in the league in batting, second in stolen bases and first in runs scored. In addition to being named to the Florida State All-Star team, Arden Pabst posted career-best numbers in several offensive categories while spending time at three different levels. A berth to the South Atlantic League playoffs came down to the final game of the regular season for West Virginia. A win by the Power or a Hagerstown loss would punch West Virginia’s ticket to the post-season. Unfortunately for the Power, neither scenario played out, resulting in a disappointing end in a season where the team went 71-62 under the direction of manager Wyatt Toregas, including a first-half record of 37-29. Shortstop Oneil Cruz ended the season by being tabbed as the league’s Most Outstanding Major League Prospect in his first full season as a member of the Pirates organization. Cruz took home South Atlantic League Player-of-the-Month honors for June, was named to the league’s post-season All-Star team, and still led the club in home runs, batting average and OPS (.831) despite having his season cut short in mid-August due to an injury. Calvin Mitchell took home both mid- and post-season All-Star accolades while finishing seventh in the league in batting and pacing the Power with 65 RBI. Deon Stafford was also named to the league’s mid-season All-Star team; he threw out 24 runners attempting to steal against him, which ranked fourth among all South Atlantic League backstops. Outfielder Lolo Sanchez, who entered the season ranked by as Pittsburgh’s 10th-best prospect, finished fourth among the league leaders with 30 stolen bases. West Virginia’s pitching staff ended the season ranked fourth among the 14 teams in the league with a 3.40 ERA and recorded 11 shutouts, which was tied for the third-most in the SAL. Twenty-year-old southpaw Domingo Robles finished seventh in the league in ERA while also pacing the staff with nine wins before being promoted to Bradenton in early August.

2018 WEST VIRGINIA BLACK BEARS The West Virginia Black Bears posted a 32-44 record and finished tied for fifth place in the Pinckney Division of the New York-Penn League under manager Kieran Mattison. Despite not qualifying for the playoffs, the Black Bears ended the season on a high note by winning seven of their final 10 games and 14 of their last 23 to close out the season. Outfielder Travis Swaggerty headlined a roster that featured many of the organization’s top selections from the 2018 draft. Swaggerty’s time in Morgantown was highlighted by being named to the New York-Penn League mid-season All-Star team. Following that game, Swaggerty was promoted to the Single-A West Virginia Power for the remainder of the season. At the time of his promotion, Swaggerty ranked ninth among all New York-Penn League batters with an .819 OPS. Swaggerty was joined at the All-Star Game by infielder Mike Gretler, who the Pirates selected in the 10th round of the 2018 draft out of the University of Oregon. Fourteenth round selection Daniel Amaral paced the league with 25 stolen bases and also finished tied for third in the league in triples along with teammate Edison Lantigua. Seventh round pick Brett Kinneman ranked third in the league in RBI. Lefty Cam Alldred, who was selected in the 24th round of the 2018 Draft, rounded out West Virginia’s representation at the All-Star Game and was eventually promoted to West Virginia. Nineteen-year-old righthander Francis Del Orbe paced the team with five wins after pitching in the Dominican Summer League in 2017.

Bristol went 31-37 while finishing tied for third in the West Division of the Appalachian League under manager Miguel Perez. It marked Bristol’s first 30-win season since 2010 and was a 14-game improvement from the 2017 club that finished tied for the second-fewest wins in Bristol baseball history. Outfielder Jonah Davis put together one of the best seasons in Bristol history during his first professional campaign after being selected by the Pirates in the 15th round of the draft earlier in the summer. Davis became just the second Bristol player since 1969 to collect at least six doubles, six triples and six homers in a season. He ended the season ranked first in the league in slugging and extra base hits (33), third in home runs and total bases (128), fourth in OPS (1.010) and eighth in batting. Davis and Mason Martin also became the first pair of Bristol teammates to hit at least 10 home runs in a season since Manuel Lutz, Mario Valenzuela and Ryan Hankins in 1998. The Bristol club also connected for a total of 48 home runs; the most by the team since 1998 (76). Bristol’s pitching staff finished the season with five shutouts; tied for second in the league and the most by the team since 2010. Seventeen-year-old outfielder Angel Basabe was named to the league’s mid-season All-Star team while leading the team with 75 total bases. Matthew Mercedes led the team in both home runs and RBI while getting off to a fast start; he hit .306 (19-for-62) and posted a .950 OPS in 18 games during the month of June. Eduar Ramirez finished second on the team with 27 RBI, which included 19 in his 28 games played after the All-Star break. Willy Basil was also named to the league’s mid-season All-Star team in his first professional season. The 21-year-old righthander made nine of his 11 appearances as a member of the starting rotation and got off to a fast start in the season after going 2-0 with a 1.11 ERA (24.1ip/3er) in five appearances (four starts) during the month of June. Seventeen-year-old southpaw Luis Peralta finished the season with a team-leading 62 strikeouts over 48.0 innings of work in his first professional season. Peralta’s average of 12.46 punchouts per 9.0 innings of work ranked fourth among DSL relievers. Lefty Braham Rosario posted a 1.84 ERA over 14 appearances (four starts) while receiving a late season promotion to the Gulf Coast League Pirates. Nineteen-year-old lefty Denny Roman whiffed 44 batters over 23.2 innings before being promoted to Bristol in early August. Righthander Oliver Mateo averaged 15.03 strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched, which ranked second among all relievers in the league.
