2015 General Election Info Sheet/Party Contact List Why Vote? The next few months will influence policies and programs for years to come, and it is crucial that people with disabilities be included. This is an opportunity to have our voices heard and help shape the direction our province will take in the future. The Alberta Disabilities Forum is encouraging all members of our community to participate in this important process. It is critical that issues important to people with disabilities be brought forward during the election campaign. After all, those we elect will decide what happens to AADL, access to medications, accessibility, education, employment, home care, housing, income support, mental health, recreation/active living, transportation and other important programs. Are You Ready to Vote? ADF will be updating our members throughout the process and working to draw attention to our issues. By taking the time to inform ourselves about the parties’ views on disability issues and to educate candidates about these issues, we can make sure Albertans with disabilities are not forgotten at the provincial level. Get Involved! The best way to ensure our voices are heard is through participation. As the public begins to focus on the election and the candidates, we can introduce aspects that may not have been considered before. By attending forums, speaking to candidates and other involved citizens, we can put our concerns at the forefront. As candidates begin to ask for our votes, ask them what they will do to support people with disabilities. How important are the issues to the candidates and the parties? To what extent will our voices be represented at the legislature? How could programs and services be improved and who is the best person for the job? Take some time to look into the parties’ platforms. To read up on the parties, you can look at the various party websites. Please see page two for a list of major parties and contact information. Elections give each and every resident of Alberta, over the age of 18, an opportunity to cast a ballot in support of someone who will best address our needs. Every single vote counts and even one vote can make a difference. In fact, some candidates have been elected by a margin of very few votes, and, in some cases, only one vote; each of us has the power to influence change. Are You Registered to Vote? If you have moved or changed your name since the March, 2008, election, you may not be on the List of Electors. To check to see if your name is on the list or to register to vote visit the secure on-line registration system called Voterlink. You can also contact Elections Alberta in person or by phone. Contact information is on page two. If your name is not on the List of Electors on Election Day, you must produce government issued 1 identification, or two pieces of identification that establish your name and current address. See the Elections Alberta website for the full list of acceptable ID. Voting Day Election Day is on May 5, 2015. You will receive the location of your local polling station in the mail. If you don’t, you can check the Elections Alberta website to find the location. If you cannot make it to the polls on Election Day, you have two options: 1. Vote at the Advance Poll in your own electoral division. Advance Polls are held from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday prior to Election Day. Addresses of Advance Poll locations are published in local newspapers and can also be obtained from Returning Officers or the Elections Alberta’s website. 2. If you are unable to vote on Election Day or at the advance polls, you can request a Special Ballot from the Returning Officer in your electoral division. You can request a special ballot in person, by mail, by fax, by email or by telephone. Make sure you have sufficient time to receive and return a Special Ballot before the close of the polls on Election Day to be counted. A guide for the use of special ballots is included on the Elections Alberta website. Let’s get together as a community to ensure that the issues of people with disabilities will be addressed and enhanced.
