STIRLING MOSS

FORMULA 1 DRIVER WHO IS HE?

Sir Stirling Moss, currently aged 88, is a British former racing driver who won 16 F1 Grand Prix.

Across all categories of racing, he won 212 of the 529 races he entered.

Despite never winning the Formula One world championship, he is often described as one the greatest ever drivers. WHY IS HE REMEMBERED AS SUCH A GREAT SPORTSMAN?

Moss came close to winning the Formula 1 championship in 1958, losing to Ferrari’s by a single point.

Moss’ defining moment came when Hawthorn was accused of reversing on the track and was disqualified from the Portuguese GP.

Moss believed this not to be true and passionately argued for his rival not to be disqualified. Moss’ fierce defence of his rival led to officials giving Hawthorn his points back – this meant Stirling lost the World Championship.

Moss would ultimately finish runner-up four times in the Formula 1 championship - never winning. SIR STIRLING MOSS

Moss excelled in every type of race he competed.

He famously won the 1955 – an astonishing 1,000 mile road through Italy on public roads, where he hit speeds of almost 180mph.

His performance has passed into legend as he won the race by over half and hour despite others Italian drivers knowing the route far better than him.

His career ended in 1962 after his Lotus suffered mechanical failure and crashed. He was in a coma for a month and paralysed for 6 months. MEETS STIRLING MOSS
