.......................................................................................................................... 17 1 ATHLETIC OVERVIEW The Lakeview Senior High School is a District 10 member of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association, which is one of the twelve districts. District 10 includes Crawford, Erie, Mercer, Venango and Warren Counties. The Lakeview School District is located in Mercer County. Lakeview’s interscholastic sports program consists of the following sports: Baseball: This spring sport is offered for boys at the junior high level, grades 7th-8th and at the varsity level, 9th-12th grades. Basketball: In the fall, this sport is offered to 7th and 8th grade girls at the junior high level. In the winter, competition includes boys 7th, 8th, and 9th grades at the junior high level, as well as, boys/girls junior varsity and varsity teams, 9th-12th grades. Cheerleading: In the fall, cheerleading is available for football at the junior high level for 7th and 8th grades and 9th-12th grades at the varsity level. In the winter, PIAA Competitive Spirit is available at the varsity level for grades 9-12. Junior high cheerleading is available for 7th and 8th graders, covering junior high boys’ basketball. Cross This fall sport is offered to boys/girls 7th and 8th grades at junior high levels and Country: 9th-12th grades at varsity levels. Football: This fall sport is offered at the junior high level for 7th and 8th grades and 9th-12th grades at the junior varsity and varsity levels. Golf: This fall sport is offered to 9th-12th grades at the varsity level. Softball: This spring sport is offered for girls at the junior high level, grades 7th-8th and at the varsity level, 9th-12th grades. Track: This spring sport is offered to boys/girls at the junior high, 7th and 8th grades, and varsity, grades 9-12, levels. Volleyball: In the fall, this sport is available for girls at the junior varsity and varsity levels, 9th-12th grades. The sport is also offered to girls in the spring at the junior high level, 7th and 8th grades. Wrestling: This winter sport is offered at the junior high, 7th and 8th grades, and junior varsity/varsity levels, 9th-12th grades. 2 ADMINISTRATIVE ORGANIZATION The Board of School Directors shall set policy with regard to conducting the athletic programs with the Lakeview School District. The Athletic Council, within the limits of the adopted School Board policies, serves as liaison between the athletic programs and Board. The Council may make recommendations to the Board. It may not usurp the powers and duties delegated to the Principal, nor may it supersede the action and power of the Board of Directors. The Council shall be composed of the following representing members: Principal, Athletic Director, Two Board of Education members (appointed by the Board of Directors’ President), Two Head Coaches, and the Superintendent. The Principal, in all matters pertaining to the interscholastic athletic relations of his/her school, is responsible to the PIAA. He/she may delegate some of those powers, but such delegation shall not relieve him/her of responsibility for any infraction by his/her school, of the Constitution and By-Laws of the PIAA. The Athletic Director is directly responsible to the principal. The primary responsibility of the athletic director is the administration and

  • Mercer Athletic Hall of Fame
    Mercer Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2000 John Dale Swogger- During his seven years as head boys’ basketball coach of the Mustangs, Mercer appeared in 5 state championship games (1962, 1963, 1964, 1966, and 1967) and won back to back state championships in 1966 and 1967. Swogger was the architect of Mercer’s devastating fast break offense, which averaged nearly 100 points per game in 1966 and 1967. During his 7-year tenure as Mercer’s coach, the Mustangs compiled a remarkable 155-31 record. Prior to coming to Mercer, Swogger started as a player for two legendary basketball coaches, L. Butler Hennon at Wampum High School and Cliff Aultman at Geneva College. Tim Thompson- He is believed to be the first athlete in Mercer High School history to individually qualify for the state championships in two sports – wrestling and track and field. As a premiere wrestler at the 167 pound weight class, Tim placed third at the state tournament. He was also a two-time Section 3 champion and a two-time Northwest Regional qualifier in wrestling. Tim also was a state qualifier in the intermediate hurdles and advanced to the state finals in the triple jump. While at Slippery Rock University he wrestled for three years on the varsity squad at the Division I level. Chuck Jaskowak- A 2-sport star at Mercer High School, Chuck was the state champion his junior year in the javelin throw. He again placed third in the state his senior year and was nationally ranked among all high school throwers. In 1981 he was one of only to Pennsylvania high school students to ever be invited to the National Championship where he placed second.

("PIAA"), the PIAA District 10 Committee, and/or Michael Ferry (the PIAA District 10 Golf Tournament Director) to permit them to participate in the PIAA District X golf championship tournament on Friday, October 3, 2020, even though they have not qualified to so participate. For the fall sports season in 2020, PIAA District X reduced the number of students who could participate in the tournament to reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection. While Plaintiffs would have qualified for the tournament last year, the revisions in qualifiers for the 2020 tournament leave them out of this year’s tournament. The decision made by PIAA was not made lightly since PIAA seeks to provide opportunities to participate. However, it was made consistent with the recommendations of PIAA’s Sports Medicine Advisory Committee, its Golf Steering Committee, and PIAA’s concerns over permitting events likely to promote the spread of COVID-19. Membership PREAMBLE The PIAA Constitution through its member schools provides substantial flexibility to each District in the state to determine its governing structure. The District Ten Committee follows the PIAA Constitution with some additional guidelines and qualifications in its governance structure. These are reflected in the following sections as noted below. The District 10 Committee shall approve the official ballot, listing recommended candidates, for distribution to principals. The Committee shall authorize the Chair of the Nominating and Election Committee to prepare the annual ballot procedures at the January/February meeting with final presentation and Committee approval at the April meeting. Members who are elected or appointed may advance additional candidates for placement on the ballot. Section 1. Membership A. County representatives: The Counties of, Crawford, Venango, Warren/Forest Counties, and the Erie Metro Area shall be entitled to one each elected representative who must be from the area represented.
