Ipswich Grammar School is one of ’s leading independent schools, catering for boys from Prep to Year 12 through the outstanding education offered to day and boarding students. Role of Dean of Students

Position Objective The Dean of Students is a member of the Senior Leadership Team and has particular responsibilities in the coordination, organization and support for the Years 7 – 12 student group. The Dean of Students acts under the direction of the Deputy Headmaster. The Dean of Students is appointed by the Headmaster/CEO and reports to the Deputy Headmaster and Headmaster/CEO.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Management

You are expected to:

• Lead and manage the Heads of Year 7 - 12 and ensure processes utilised are effective and timely; • In consultation with the Heads of Year 7 – 12, the Deputy Headmaster and the Dean of Academics, track the academic performance of students through the analysis of available data; • Manage the Dean of Student’s budget accordingly; • Maintain familiarity with relevant state and national reports and legislation relevant to the operation of the School; and • Perform any other duties as may be determined by the Headmaster/CEO from time to time.

Pastoral leadership and Management

You are expected to:

• Lead and manage aspects of the IGS Strategic Plan which relate to Year 7 – 12 wellbeing; • Support the Dean of Community in the implementation of the ‘Round Square’ framework at IGS. • Support the Heads of Year 7 – 12 in relation to pastoral care for students in those year groups; • Model quality teaching practice, lead and motivate others in the pursuit of excellence in the classroom; • Implement effective staff in-service and professional development in response to new pastoral trends, theories and -learning pedagogy; • Demonstrate positive interpersonal relationships with students; and • Design and co-ordinate student leadership programs.

Student Management (Years 7-12)

You are expected to: • Monitor behavior, uniform and appearance of Years 7 – 12 students at school and on transport – public and charter; • Communicate with parents and students regarding issues including academic/pastoral progress across Years 7 - 12 (in conjunction with the relevant Head of Year); • Facilitate the application and appointment process for student leadership; • Monitor student attendance and liaise with parents re: extended absences; • Develop a network of referral systems for students at risk; • Work closely with the School’s Guidance Counselor in relation to secondary students; • Liaise with outside agencies – Child Protection, etc; • Attend weekend sporting commitments; • Work closely with the Director of Boarding in the areas of student welfare and matters of ongoing or student behavior issues in the boarding environment; • Communicate with families regarding ongoing or serious behavior issues; • Attend Prefect meetings and provide guidance where necessary; • Be available to parents after hours in relation to school/home issues; and • Coordinate and communicate with parents, staff and students and liaise with the Director of Sport and Activities in relation to major GPS sporting events.

Qualifications and Experience

• The Appointee must be a qualified and registered Teacher with QCT and have significant and successful teaching experience. • The appointee must have a graduate degree from a recognised university. A post- graduate degree would be highly desirable. • Previous experience in middle and/or senior management.

Key Selection Criteria

SC1 Thorough knowledge and proven ability in developing, implementing and reviewing Pastoral programs and supportive school environments within year levels P to 12

SC2 The ability to lead and motivate staff SC3 The ability to manage positive relationships with boys to ensure best outcomes and high standards of uniform and behaviour

SC4 Demonstrated high level of interpersonal skills with all stakeholders including communication, leadership and people management SC 5 Proven capacity to be fully engaged in the life of a school

As a condition of employment all teaching staff are to provide copies of their academic transcripts and evidence of their current Queensland School of Registration. Teachers are required to maintain their renewal of registration with the Queensland School of Teachers for the duration of employment.

All employees recognise and accept that multi skilling is an essential component of the school and all employees may be required from time to time to undertake duties that are outside their normal position description but within their skills, competency and capability.
