(ii) Reference to the victims of Cyclone 'Ockhi' and subsequent heavy rains in the coastal areas of the States of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Lakshadweep The Chairman made a reference to Cyclone 'Ockhi' and subsequent heavy rains in the coastal areas of the States of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, on the 1st of December, 2017, in which more than 60 persons lost their lives with some still missing and more than 100 others were injured. The House observed silence, all Members standing, as a mark of respect to the memory of those, who lost their lives in these tragedies. 11-20 a.m. 5. Felicitations by the Chair (i) Felicitations to the Indian Men's and Women's Hockey Teams The Chairman, on behalf of the whole House and on his own behalf, congratulated the Indian Men's and Women's Hockey Team for winning the Asia Cup, 2017 held in Dhaka, Bangladesh and Kakamigahara, Japan, on the 22nd of October, 2017 and the 5th of November, 2017, respectively. (ii) Felicitations to Shrimati M.C. Mary Kom and Shrimati Saikhom Mirabai Chanu The Chairman, on behalf of the whole House and on his behalf, congratulated Shrimati M.C. Mary Kom, a nominated Member of Rajya Sabha and Shrimati Saikhom Mirabai Chanu for winning gold medals in the 48 Kg. category at the Asian Women's Boxing Championships and World Weightlifting Championship held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and California, USA on the 8th and 29th of November, 2017, respectively.     TIF - Muslim politics and the 2020 Bihar Election JULIEN LEVESQUE December 4, 2020 Asaduddin Owaisi with the newly elected AIMIM MLAs from Bihar | AIMIM (Facebook) The story of the Muslim vote in Bihar is not the triumph of the AIMIM, but the strong desire of the Muslim voter in both majority and minority areas across the state to express herself against the BJP and its allies. In the final outcome of the Bihar assembly elections, what drew attention to some of the successful Muslim candidates was the fact that the All India Muslim Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) won five seats in the north- eastern Seemanchal region, where Muslims form about half of the population (from 77.5% in Jokihat to 38% in Araria). However, the AIMIM’s MLAs represent less than a third of the 19 Muslims who were elected to the assembly this year. This shows that there is more to Muslim political participation in Bihar than the AIMIM’s breakthrough. This article offers a typology of the forms of political dynamics among Muslims in Bihar — the basic idea being that Muslim political dynamics are different in minority and majority areas.     ParliamentaryRAJYA SABHA Bulletin PART-II Nos. 57403-57419] TUESDAY, JANUARY 23, 2018 No. 57403 Table Office Decision of the Chairman, Rajya Sabha on the Petition filed by Shri Ali Anwar Ansari, Member (since disqualified) against Shri Ram Chandra Prasad Singh, another Member under the Tenth Schedule to the Constitution of India The decision, dated the 19th of January, 2018, of the Chairman, Rajya Sabha given under paragraph 6(1) of the Tenth Schedule to the Constitution of India is as under:–– “ORDER Shri Ali Anwar Ansari, Member (since disqualified) of the Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)] in Rajya Sabha (hereinafter called 'the Petitioner'), filed a petition before me on the 30th of October, 2017, under Article 102 (2) read with paragraph 6 of the Tenth Schedule to the Constitution of India and Rule 6 of the Members of the Rajya Sabha (Disqualification on Ground of Defection) Rules, 1985 (hereinafter called 'the Rules') praying that Shri Ram Chandra Prasad Singh, another Member and Leader of the JD(U) in the Rajya Sabha (hereinafter called 'the Respondent'), be disqualified under the Tenth Schedule to the Constitution and his seat be declared vacant in the Rajya Sabha. 2. The main allegation of the Petitioner was that the Respondent by openly pledging his support and allegiance to Shri Nitish Kumar and by supporting and actively participating in the alleged egregious activities of Shri Nitish Kumar, namely, (i) not conducting timely organizational elections within the JD(U) in accordance with the party constitution; (ii) devising a clever conspiracy to reduce the strength of the National Council of JD(U) in a fraudulent manner, so as to eliminate any chance of opposing him; and (iii) withdrawal from the Mahagathbandhan and formation of Government in Bihar with the support of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has betrayed the trust reposed by the people of Bihar through their mandate, all of which were for pure political and opportunistic reasons, had indicated his total disregard and lack of faith and allegiance to the party and its constitution.
