THE TRINITY CATHOLIC SUMMER NEWSLETTER SCHOOL 2016 MERCY, THE CHALLENGES AND GOING THE EXTRA MILE We have been considering the meaning of the “Year of Mercy” and thought about its meaning and what actions follow. I never cease to be amazed at the many acts of kindness and mercy shown in our community. The ethos of a Catholic school with its moral purpose brings together teachers, pupils and parents in a special way. As we reach the end of another year I am thankful to the teachers here and the support staff, who all act as role models and go that extra mile and you for your support. As I have watched end of term assemblies it is amazing to see the many opportunities your children have taken in sport, drama, volunteering, music, outdoor education and lessons. In all their school work we have challenged them this year to show what they can do if they work hard, persevere and face up to those challenges -much like life, and they have well and truly taken that on. On behalf of the school I would wish you all a safe and happy summer break.

END OF YEAR LITURGY

On the last Friday of term Miss McGrath led our end of year liturgy. This years presentations were from Religious Studies, English, Science, Design Technology, History, Art And Dance. This was a joyful celebration of the year’s work in which we encourage staff and pupils to take a leading role. The theme ‘Kaleidoscope of Learning’ enabled each subject area to show how their subject contributes to the marvellous diversity and creativity we find through learning. Pupils also led readings and prayers throughout the afternoon. It is a fantastic way to end the year, bringing together the whole school in worship.

THE TRINITY www.trinity..sch.uk CATHOLIC SCHOOL ART AND DESIGN TECHNOLOGY EXHIBITION Trinity School hosted a showcase of A Level Art and DT work. Coursework, exam projects and final pieces were all on view for students, parents and staff to admire. Year 13 ended their creative journey at Trinity with independent and individual projects based on their personal interests in Art. The exam theme for Year 13 this year was “Truth, Fantasy and Fiction”. DT work included superb A Level and GCSE examples from Textiles, Graphics, Food Technology and Resistant Materials. BATTLE OF THE SOMME TALK On Friday 1st July, 100 years to the day, Mr Howell and Mr Stevens delivered a talk on the Battle of the Somme. The talk involved Mr Howell explaining how the battle was waged, from the first day on 1st July to the final battles in November 1916. Mr Stevens talked about some of the various item of kit that the soldiers had and showed examples of them from his own personal collection. During the interval and at the end of the talk, the audience were allowed to pick up and try on the various artefacts that Mr Stevens had bought along.

The evening was a great success and had one of the highest turn outs for a PTA event at the school. It was a fitting tribute to the many thousands of soldiers who paid the ultimate price on that terrible day, 100 years ago.

HANDBALL LEADERSHIP AT TRINITY Handball at Trinity has continued to grow from strength to strength this year with success This Girl Can Project in the U13 and U15 competition for both the girls and the boys. The U13 boys and U15 girls As a finale to the project this year, the group teams progressed to the Midland finals held here in Nottingham were they played a number of girls involved in the project ran a festival of teams from across the East Midlands and Lincolnshire. Both teams played fantastically and for local primary schools at NTU. Trinity were won their finals to secure their place at the National Finals at Worcester Arena in June. responsible for organising the opening This was the second year running for the girls who competed on Saturday 11th June and hopes ceremony as well as running a 35 minute were high after some impressive play this year. The standard of play at both competitions has workshop on handball. The girls did the increased since the previous year and every game was close. Although the girls went ahead in school very proud! 4 of their 6 games, they were unfortunate to only win their last game to finish 6th overall. This is still a huge achievement with over 2,000 schools across the country entering the competition. This was the debut for the boys after narrowly missing out in the midlands final the previous year. The boys absolutely loved the experience of playing in such a fantastic handball facility. The standard of the competition was fierce and they relished the physicality of the tournament. Trinity gave a great account of themselves with a squad which was plagued with injuries. It was agonising to watch as they lost a couple of matches in the final few seconds of the game. I’m sure they have learned a lot from this experience and will grow as handballers as a result. What both teams have achieved is fantastic and all the players are a real credit to themselves and the school. Three of the girls got chosen to attend the Midlands Regional Academy which is a program running alongside clubs that agglomerate the best players from a region once a month, providing more specialised coaching, better opposition and the opportunity to be followed closely by the National Primary Festivals U16 Academy coaches. A Level A2 Drama students performed their last performance pieces in May, but what a performance they produced! All 3 pieces were developed from George Orwell’s ‘ 1984’ which was part of The Nottingham Playhouse’s Conspiracy Season. Students scripted, staged and directed their performances. The pieces entitled ‘Genesis, Breaking The Circuit and 30’ took the audience on a thought provoking , exhilarating journey infused with multi-media factual reports with engaging moments through monologues and soliloquys.

The ‘Young Creative Arts Awards’ competition was launched to all students. Young people, between 13 and 24 years old, who work, live or study in Nottingham, were invited to submit entries on their “Goals and Dreams”. The theme built on the pride in Nottingham’s achievement in our creative and sporting heritage. This was a chance for the City of Nottingham’s young people to share their goals and dreams through the YCA. The girls who took part said ”This was our first Young Creative Awards entry this year, it was very exciting and we enjoyed choreographing our work and taking part in such a big event in Nottingham. The evening was very exciting too, getting to meet lots of other young creative people and attending it with our family and our teacher”.
