What Is the True Value of Tax Deferral?
RECORD, Volume 29, No. 1* Washington, D.C., Spring Meeting May 29–30, 2003 Session 35L What Is the True Value of Tax Deferral? Track: Education & Research Moderator: KRZYSZTOF M. OSTASZEWSKI Panelists: JAMES M. CARSON† KRZYSZTOF M. OSTASZEWSKI Summary: It is a truism that tax deferral is a great benefit enjoyed by qualified plans, individual retirement accounts and deferred annuity products. The actual quantification of this benefit, however, is less obvious. Furthermore, tax deferral does not come free—access to funds in tax-deferred accounts is restricted. In this session, the panelists show how long it takes for tax-deferral benefits to overcome typical penalties levied on early distributions. They also discuss the effect of tax deferral on the risk profile of investments. Attendees gain a better understanding of the value of tax deferral in various accumulation products and its role in product development. DR. KRZYSZTOF M. OSTASZEWSKI: I am the actuarial program director at Illinois State University. I am the moderator and one of the two speakers in this session. The other speaker is Dr. James Carson, who is a professor and Midyette Eminent Scholar in risk management and insurance at Florida State University. We are presenting research done jointly with Dr. Yu-Luen Ma, who is assistant professor in the department of finance, insurance and law at Illinois State University. During this session, we will discuss the issue of the value of tax deferral. This is _________________________________ *Copyright © 2003, Society of Actuaries †Mr. James M. Keyboard Courage”, the Debut Single from Her Upcoming “Duality” Album
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contact: Len Evans, Project Publicity: 212-445-0066 [email protected] RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE STAR RELEASES NEW ANTI-CYBERBULLYING ANTHEM Kelly Mantle Releases “Keyboard Courage”, The Debut Single From Her Upcoming “Duality” Album New York, NY: First, Prince William and wife Kate Middleton announced plans to tackle cyber-bullying; now, a queen is joining the fight. RuPaul’s Drag Race’s Kelly Mantle’s new pop track, “Keyboard Courage”, is intended to be an anthem for anyone who has been harassed or stalked online. “I’ve been called every name in the book,” she reveals. “One person tweeted ‘Kelly Mantle is so ugly. She looks like a burn victim going through chemo.’ Luckily, Kelly’s strong sense of humor allows her to brush off many of the personal attacks, but she wrote the song after meeting young fans being victimized online by kids in their schools. “Not everyone can laugh it off. It’s a scary thought that someone’s heartless, mindless words could drive another person to take their life.” Kelly Mantle’s “Keyboard Courage” is available on iTunes now. “My hope is that Keyboard Courage can be that song kids listen to and be reminded to not get discouraged by online bullies,” continues Kelly Mantle from her Hollywood home. Produced by Steven Phillips, who also produced Mantle’s last album Satellite Baby, “Keyboard Courage” is a high energy, 80’s inspired pop track. It’s fun but with a powerful message. The lyrics include actual negative comments that Kelly Mantle has received. - over - PROJECT PUBLICITY, INC. -

Hosted by veteran drag performer RuPaul, Drag Race features drag queen entertainers vying for the title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar.” Since premiering in 2009, the show has become a queer cultural phenomenon that successfully commodifies and markets Camp and drag performance to television audiences at heretofore unprecedented levels. Over its nine seasons, the show has provided more than 100 drag queen artists with a platform to showcase their talents, and the Drag Race franchise has expanded to include multiple television series and interactive live events. The RuPaul’s Drag Race phenomenon provides researchers with invaluable opportunities not only to consider the function of drag in the 21st Century, but also to explore the cultural and economic ramifications of this reality television franchise. -
