In February 2018, the University of King’s College in Halifax, Nova Scotia, initiated its own investigations to bring to light ways in which slavery and the profits derived from trade in the products of enslaved labour contributed to the creation and early operation of King’s, Canada’s oldest chartered university. David W. States, a historian of African Nova Scotia with a multi-generational personal heritage in this province, and Karolyn Smardz Frost, an archaeologist, historian and author whose studies focus on African Canadian and African American transnationalism, were chosen to become part of a small cadre of scholars charged with the task of bringing different aspects of this long-hidden history to light.

    CHARLES FRANKHAM TO MAKE PRO DEBUT IN NOTTINGHAM Charles Frankham will make his long-awaited professional debut at the Motorpoint Arena Nottingham on May 10 in the next instalment of the JD NXTGEN series, shown live in the UK on Sky Sports and DAZN in the US. Frankham, 19, enjoyed a glittering amateur career in which he won multiple titles including a World Youth Championship bronze medal, a Commonwealth Youth Games gold medal and a European Championship gold medal, as well as 11 National titles. Known as ‘Boom Boom’, the Crowthorne talent has been preparing for his pro debut with trainer Tony Sims at the Matchroom Gym in Essex and is delighted to finally begin life in the paid code at Super-Featherweight next month. “I’m over the moon to be making my pro debut in Nottingham,” said Frankham. “We had a little bit of a setback but I’ve been training hard in the gym with the rest of the lads and I’m ready to announce myself on the big stage on May 10. “I’m lucky to be part of a buzzing gym, I’ve been sparring with Joe Cordina and Conor Benn who are both fighting and the big April 20 show at The O2 and they’ve been bringing me on leaps and bounds. I’m ready to get out there now and make my mark.” Frankham makes his pro debut on a huge night of boxing in Nottingham.     JORDAN GILL HEADLINES JD NXTGEN SHOW IN PETERBOROUGH Jordan Gill faces Mexico’s Emmanuel Dominguez for the WBA International Featherweight crown at the East of England Arena in Peterborough on March 2, live on Sky Sports in the UK and DAZN in the US. The Chatteris man headlines the next instalment of the JD NXTGEN series with his first fight in his home county for five years after he stopped Ryan Doyle to claim the Commonwealth Featherweight title in October. ‘The Thrill’ looked flawless against Doyle, dominating proceedings throughout before producing an impressive stoppage in round seven to win the first title of his professional career, and the Dave Coldwell-trained talent is hungry for more titles in 2019. “I’m buzzing to have the chance to bring a big event to the area and put on a show for the fans,” said Gill. “I hope it’s a huge success and will be the first of many shows in the city.
