On blind dates, I like to buy a woman dinner 'cause it makes her more likely to either sleep with me or give me a second date. When I buy you dinner, you'll know I'm interested. I'm a good guy, which means I generally don't lie, but I just did to you. This is not a job interview. Quinn: Wait. I don't, um, I'm confused. Harrison: Olivia already told me to hire you. The job is yours, if you want it. The best job you'll ever have. You'll change lives, slay dragons, love the hunt more than you ever dreamed because Olivia Pope is as amazing as they say. Stephen: The Ambassador couldn't come up with the rest, which is a problem, a very big problem, why we shouldn't even be going up there in the first place. And I did not flake. I'm working for you. Olivia: Well, it's all the Ambassador had on such short notice, so you're just gonna have to take it. Oskar: Leave the $3 million. When you come back with the rest? We have a deal. Olivia: That's not gonna happen, Oskar. Oskar: No? Olivia: Nyet. What's going to happen is you and Vlad are gonna take the $3 million and leave right now for Dulles to make your flight to the motherland. The reason you're gonna want to go right now beside the fact that it's just good travel sense to give yourself enough time for international check-in, is in exactly 4 hours and 15 minutes, both of your names are gonna suddenly "pop up" on homeland security's no-fly list. Lucky for you, you're booked on a flight that leaves in two and a half hours, so if it were me, I'd much rather spend $3 million in Kiev than here in Georgetown. Way more bang for your buck. In fact, it may even feel like $6 once you're there. Olivia: Good boys. So since we have a deal, I am gonna take what we paid for. Pleasure doing business with you. I thank you, my client thanks you, and I hope to never see you again. Stephen: God, I love this job. OLIVIA POPE AND ASSOCIATES: Quinn: Do I look okay? Harrison: Too much cleavage. Can I just say that I am a huge fan? I so admire your work in the White House. It is an honor to work for your law firm. Olivia: We're not a law firm. We're lawyers, but this is not a law firm. African American women have consistently resisted, challenged, submitted to, and remixed racial myths and sexual stereotypes existing in American cinema and television programming. Mainstream film and television practices significantly contribute to the reinforcement of old stereotypes in contemporary black women characters. However, based on the efforts of African American producers like Shonda Rhimes, who has attempted to insert more realistic renderings of African American women in her recent television shows, black women’s representation is undergoing yet another shift in contemporary media.

    Black Women in Primetime Soap Opera: Examining Representation within Genre Television by Courtney Suggs A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Media Studies Middle Tennessee State University December 2019 Dissertation Committee: Dr. Katie Foss, Chair Dr. Sanjay Asthana Dr. Sally Ann Cruikshank ABSTRACT Using textual genre analysis, this research studied representation in primetime soap operas Scandal, How To Get Away with Murder, and Empire. Two hundred and eighty- three episodes were viewed to understand how black female identity is represented in primetime soap and how genre influences those representation. Using Collins (2009) theory of controlling images, this study found that black female protagonists were depicted as jezebels and matriarchs. The welfare mother stereotype was updated by portrayals of black woman as hard working. Dubose All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Patrick Pauken, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the experiences in leadership advancement of African American women. Over 10 million African American women are in the civilian labor force (United States Department of Labor statistics, 2015)). The population of African American women with degrees having significantly increased over thirty years, with 264% more Bachelor’s degrees and 353% more Master’s degrees being earned, however barriers to opportunities continue to exist (Nooks-Wallner, 2008). Although anti-discrimination laws have existed since 1964, covert discriminatory patterns continue and are often entrenched in workplace systems, which prevent advancement opportunities (Cook & Glass, 2013) Phenomenology was the qualitative research method utilized for this study. Phenomenology is a scholarly study method that provides meaning-making, to more effectively comprehend the perspective of an individual or group of individuals. Meaning is gained through attaining data about situations or events surrounding a specific phenomenon. The intention is to determine how and why it influences others as it goes beyond the surface to gain depth. This study gathered data through various methods, such as an advance questionnaire, semi-structured interview protocol, review of participant leadership samples, and resumes/curriculum vitaes.

ABSTRACT The modern television viewer enjoys an unprecedented amount of choice and control -- a direct result of widespread availability of new technology and services. Cultivated in this new television landscape is the phenomenon of binge watching, a popular conversation piece in the current zeitgeist yet a greatly under- researched topic academically. This exploratory research study was able to make significant strides in understanding binge watching by examining its effect on the viewer - more specifically, how it affects their reception towards a television show. Utilizing a uses and gratifications perspective, this study conducted an experiment on 212 university students who were assigned to watch one of two drama series, and designated a viewing condition, binge watching or appointment viewing. Data gathered using preliminary and post questionnaires, as well as short episodic diary surveys, measured reception factors such as opinion, enjoyment and satisfaction. This study found that the effect of binge watching on viewer reception is contingent on the show.

Scholars have found that through the use of tactics like colorblind casting, Rhimes unintentionally creates problematic relationships between characters. Focusing on production techniques and dialogue, this paper examines episodes from two of her most popular shows, How To Get Away With Murder and Scandal. This paper argues that while the shows pursue progressive material, the shows present African-American female characters that require partners. Further, both white male characters negatively influence the women’s independence.

Keywords: gender equality, power strategy, women in leadership, women power, media presentation. This study aims to analyze the power strategy of women characters in Scandal TV Series Season 7. This television series mostly tells about the powerful women politicians who work and handle the scandalous cases. At season 7, there will be the four strong female characters that took the main role in this Scandal serial which are Olivia Pope, Mellie Grant, Quinn Perkins, and Abby Wheelan. The author aims to analyze the power strategies of those four female characters in the Scandal TV Series Season 7. There are five types of power strategies of Thimm, C., Koch, SC, and Schey, S. (2003), which are order, direct request, threat, hierarchy, and demonstrating competence. This study uses a qualitative approach concerning the use of clear and systematic descriptions of the research being studied. Descriptive studies in the textual analysis were applied in this study to analyze conversations of female characters through the results of the transcript from the manuscript.
