LET’S GO CAMPING A book on places to go camping within the Mid Iowa Council area. This book has been produced by the Mitigwa Lodge of the Order Of The Arrow for use by Scouts and Scout Leaders to help establish a good outdoor program with new and interesting places to go camping within the Mid Iowa Council area. INTRODUCTION This book has been published by the Mitigwa Lodge of the Order Of The Arrow for use by Scouts and Scout leaders to help establish a good outdoor with new and interesting places to go camping within the Mid-Iowa Council Area. The information contained herein has been extracted from publications, brochures, etc, prepared by the Iowa Department Of Natural Resources, each of the county Conservation Boards and other public interest groups. It is not copyrighted and may be downloaded or reproduced in part or in full without requesting the permission of the agency that compiled the information and prepared it. It is requested that any user that would like to add additional locations to the book or can provide updated information on the contents, forward the information to the Mitigwa Lodge to the attention of the Vice Chief of Communications, The Lodge Advisor, or Let’s Go Camping. Location information in the form of brochures, maps of the park, etc, and other detailed information is greatly appreciated. Update input may be submitted to the Mitigwa Lodge website, the Mid-Iowa Council or at lodge events. As updates become available, notice will be given in the Mitigwa Chief and on the Mitigwa Lodge website. GENERAL INFORMATION CAMPING TYPES AND SITES: Camping types normally are categorized as: Modern: Includes as a minimum, shower facilities and restrooms with running water. Non-modern: Does not include showers, but restrooms may have running water and pad type campsites may have electrical hookups. Tent: Campsites designed for tent camping only. Youth Group: Campsites designed for youth group camping only. Most require prior reservation with the ranger or county Conservation Board. Hike-in: Campsites designed for access by hiking in. These campsites may be primitive. Bicycle: Campsites designed to be used by individuals traveling by bicycle. Many parks will allow hike in camping in these campsites, but contact the park ranger, county Conservation Board, etc, first for permission. Equestrian: Campsites designed to be used by individuals on horseback. Many parks will allow hike in camping in these campsites, but contact the park ranger, county Conservation Board, etc, first for permission. Primitive: Campsites that normally do not have restrooms, latrines or running water. CABINS AND SHELTERS: Cabins normally require reservations and may be designed for smaller groups, such as families. Shelters: Frequently, shelters require reservations. Enclosed shelters may or may not have electricity, running water, or restrooms. SWIMMING: Most camping locations that have beaches and permit swimming DO NOT have lifeguards. Follow all BSA requirements when using these facilities. BOAT RAMP NEARBY: The boat ramp or access may be within the park, etc, or it may be within a mile or so of the camping area. Keep in mind that most campground and parks are seasonal.
