Hester This dissertation was prepared under the direction of the candidate's dissertation advisor, Dr. Jane Caputi, Center for Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Communication, and Multimedia and has been approved by the members of his supervisory committee. It was submitted to the faculty of the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters and was accepted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Khaled Sobhan, Ph.D. Interim Dean, Graduate College iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Jane Caputi for guiding me through this process. She was truly there from this paper’s incubation as it was in her Sex, Violence, and Hollywood class where the idea that James Bond could be repressing his homosexuality first revealed itself to me. She encouraged the exploration and was an unbelievable sounding board every step to fruition. Stephen Charbonneau has also been an invaluable resource. Frankly, he changed the way I look at film. His door has always been open and he has given honest feedback and good advice. Oliver Buckton possesses a knowledge of James Bond that is unparalleled. I marvel at how he retains such information.

Rent Glossary of Terms 11th Street and Avenue B CBGB’s – More properly CBGB & OMFUG, a club on Bowery Ave between 1st and 2nd streets. The following is taken from the website http://www.cbgb.com. It is a history written by Hilly Kristal, the founder of CBGB and OMFUG. The question most often asked of me is, "What does CBGB stand for?" I reply, "It stands for the kind of music I intended to have, but not the kind that we became famous for: COUNTRY BLUEGRASS BLUES." The next question is always, "but what does OMFUG stand for?" and I say "That's more of what we do, It means OTHER MUSIC FOR UPLIFTING GORMANDIZERS." And what is a gormandizer? It’s a voracious eater of, in this case, MUSIC. […] The obvious follow up question is often "is this your favorite kind of music?" No!!! I've always liked all kinds but half the radio stations all over the U.S. were playing country music, cool juke boxes were playing blues and bluegrass as well as folk and country. Also, a lot of my artist/writer friends were always going off to some fiddlers convention (bluegrass concert) or blues and folk festivals. So I thought it would be a whole lot of fun to have my own club with all this kind of music playing there. Unfortunately—or perhaps FORTUNATELY—things didn't work out quite the way I 'd expected. That first year was an exercise in persistence and a trial in patience. My determination to book only musicians who played their own music instead of copying others, was indomitable.

James Bond The release this month of the 23rd Bond film, Skyfall, coincides with the 50th anniversary of James Bond's first appearance on the silver screen. Klaus Dodds looks back on half a century of 007. Shaken and Stirred His word is his Bond: Ian Fleming photographed in 1963 and (inset) the cover of a first edition of Casino Royaie. 50 HistoryTodfl;' | October 2012 www.historytoday.com James Bond n October 5th, 1962 Dr No premiered at the London Pavilion and made a relatively unknown Scottish actor, Sean Connery a Ostar. Sent to Jamaica to investigate a suspi- cious disappearance, the British spy James Bond (007) eventually tracks the killer and a previously unknown secret organisation to Crab Key. With the help of an innocent girl called Honey Ryder, famously dressed in a white bikini. Bond confronts the first of many evil geniuses intent on implementing plans for global domination. Dr No, a disfigured but gifted scientist, reveals that he works for SPECTRE (Special Executive for Counter-Intelligence, Terrorism and Revenge and Extortion). The organisation is planning to sabotage the US space programme in nearby Florida in order to wreak havoc and trigger a conflict between East and West. SPECTRE hopes the United States will attack the Soviet Union in retaliation. Bond, after evading capture and assassination, kills Dr No and scuppers the plot. The film was a commercial success, even if the trade press reviews were mixed. With a budget of $1 million it generated nearly $60 million in box office receipts and thus initiated an extraordinary chapter in cinematic history.

Royale, No Cheese: Rescuing Bond from Self-Parody SOFIA DORRELL Sofa Dorrell is a fourth year cinema studies specialist, passionate about flm history, psychology, and popular culture in media. 6 6 As a reboot both informed and complicated by conventions and contrivances formulated in the past, Casino Royale1 expresses modern anxieties of the war on terror. Casino Royale also exalts the Bond-girl to the status of the Bond-woman, in the sense that she carries the weight of signifying Bond’s relationship to women in what is, in effect, his origin story. Vesper Lynd survives the majority of the film so that in her death, she may teach Bond the ways of the gendered world exterior to his MI6 training. In the interest of staying relevant in this renewal and revision of the Bond film franchise, Casino Royale recalls elements of Dr. No2, Die Another Day3, From Russia With Love,4 On Her Majesty’s Secret Service,5 Spectre,6 and Goldfinger.7 Daniel Craig’s Bond certainly bears many of the features of the spy that we know, but he is not the lighthearted and parodic trope we have come to love. Created in an entirely new geopolitical climate, Casino Royale has a plethora of new material to work with. Casino Royale was created in a geopolitical climate that differs from the Cold War ethos from which the Ian Fleming novels and the initial James Bond films originated. Heightened anxieties surrounding international travel, movement, and dissemination of information becomes allegorized in the form of a poker game between international millionaires, symbolizing Le Chiffre’s casino economy scheme.

  • Scientists in the Bond Film Franchise Claire Hines, Solent University
Scientists in the Bond film franchise Claire Hines, Solent University Abstract The James Bond film franchise (1962–ongoing) has always relied on science and technology for topicality and spectacle. Over the years, the scientist figure has also made regular appearances in the Bond films, most often within the confines of some of the established character types and functions defined by the formula aspects of the series – the villain, the Bond girl and the Quatermaster, better known as Q. This article uses Bond scholarship to consider key examples of each of these depictions of the scientist in relation to the heroic masculinity of James Bond, and in the broader context of research examining images of scientists in popular fiction. In so doing the article contributes to ongoing debates about the representational politics of Bond and scientist stereotypes in popular culture. Keywords James Bond Bond girl Quatermaster scientist stereotypes Bond films mad scientist 1 The James Bond film franchise began with the release of Dr No (Young 1962), a film of many notable firsts for the long-running and highly formulaic series. These important firsts include the introduction of Sean Connery as James Bond, the introduction of the criminal organization SPECTRE and the first major Bond villain, the first of the Bond girls and a number of key recurring characters. Even though some changes were made to the novel written by Ian Fleming and published in 1958, the film nevertheless follows the same storyline: Bond is sent by the British Secret Service to Jamaica, where he uncovers an evil plot headed by a scientific mastermind.
