Using the faces and forces of oppression as presented by Iris Marion Young and Hilde Lindemann, I show how the working class experiences oppression. I also show how oppression based on class differs from that based on gender and how these differences contribute to the invisibility of working class women within feminism. -

Teaching Feminist Philosophy on Race and Gender: Beyond the Additive Approach?1 Mechthild Nagel, SUNY Cortland, April 2011 Abstract: This paper addresses a dilemma in feminist philosophy: how do we engage effectively with historical texts that marginalize the subaltern other? Feminist standpoint theory and critical race theory have popularized an interlocking systems of oppression approach which raises serious questions about the durability of feminist and anti-racist epistemic practices loyal to an “additive” approach (King, 1995 [1988]; Spelman, 1988). I argue that the interlocking approach does make our epistemic practices more robustly truth-seeking; however, it seems to undermine the “ampersand” or additive approach that feminist philosophers have used to ferret out discriminatory evaluations in canonical andropocentric texts and in the contemporary life-world. My question is whether we can continue to teach and investigate race and gender as if they were isolated facts of life or whether we can appropriate a combination of additive and intersectional analysis, which engender a meaningful practice of solidarity. In their textbook Theorizing Feminisms, editors Elizabeth Hackett and Sally Haslanger (2006) ask the following self-reflective study question: “Does thinking about intersectionality reveal weaknesses in Haslanger’s discussion of the social construction of gender, Wendell’s discussion of the social construction of disability, or Young’s discussion of oppression?” (p.40). I would like to offer an affirmative answer and at the same time point to the difficulty of articulating a rich account of intersectionality of systems of domination in particular when teaching courses on prejudice and discrimination. I find it troubling that it remains a major challenge for me to teach the interlocking approach to undergraduates in the US context. -

Cierpial: Interpreting Sati: The Complex Relationship Between Gender and P INTERPRETING SATI: THE COMPLEX RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GENDER AND POWER IN INDIA Interpreting Sati: The Complex Relationship Between Gender and Power In India Cheyanne Cierpial A recurring theme encountered in Hinduism is the significance of context sensitivity. In order to understand the religion, one must thoroughly examine and interpret the context surrounding a topic in Hinduism.1 Context sensitivity is nec- essary in understanding the role of gender and power in Indian society, as an exploration of patriarchal values, religious freedoms, and the daily ideologies as- sociated with both intertwine to create a complicated and elaborate relationship. The act of sati, or widow burning, is a place of intersection between these values and therefore requires in-depth scholarly consideration to come to a more fully adequate understanding. The controversy surrounding sati among religion schol- ars and feminist theorists reflects the difficulties in understanding the elaborate relationship between power and gender as well as the importance of context sen- sitivity in the study of women and gender in Hinduism. -

\\jciprod01\productn\H\HLH\28-1\HLH105.txt unknown Seq: 1 6-JUL-15 11:18 Intersectionality and International Law: Recognizing Complex Identities on the Global Stage Aisha Nicole Davis* As a legal theory, intersectionality seeks to create frameworks that con- sider the multiple identities that individuals possess, including race, gen- der, sexuality, age, and ability. When applied, intersectionality recognizes complexities in an individual’s identity to an extent not possi- ble using mechanisms that focus solely on one minority marker. This Note proposes incorporating intersectional consideration in the realm of inter- national human rights law and international humanitarian law to bet- ter address the human rights violations that affect women whose identities fall within more than one minority group because of their ethnicity or race. The Note begins with an explanation of intersectional- ity, and then applies intersectionality to human rights mechanisms within the United Nations and to cases in international criminal tribu- nals and the International Criminal Court. As it stands, international human rights law, international criminal law, and international hu- manitarian law view women who are members of a racial or ethnic mi- nority as variants on a given category. This Note contends that by applying a framework that further incorporates intersectionality—that is, both in discourse and action—in international human rights law, international humanitarian law, and international criminal law, these women’s identities will be more fully recognized, opening up the possibil- ity for more representative women’s rights discourse, and remedies for human rights abuses that better address the scope and nature of the violations. -
