The romance between Bollywood and Digital Media A study on the implementation of digital promotional activities in Bollywood Student Name: Dinesh Koendjbiharie Student Number: 357429 Supervisor: Payal Arora PhD MA Media Studies – Media and Business Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication Erasmus University Rotterdam MA Thesis July 2015 0 Version 2.0. - July 2015 The romance between Bollywood and Digital Media A study on the implementation of digital promotional activities in Bollywood ABSTRACT The Indian cinema, often referred to as Bollywood, is when it comes to production scale the largest movie industry in the world. The media and creative industries have been facing a new challenge in the past decade such as, but not limited to, the implementation of new digital media technologies in their digital promotional strategies. This research looks into the promotional activities in contemporary Bollywood that are visible to the consumer. The research question: “How does Bollywood use social media for promotional activities to reach the domestic and global market and possibly strengthen their current promotional strategies?” will be answered through two in-depth case studies on Bollywood blockbuster movie ‘Happy New Year’ and a movie that did exceptionally well ‘Queen’. This research firstly touches upon the changes and the development the industry went through, followed by creating an understanding of the industry’s contemporary position. The first step of the analysis is based on creating an in-depth understanding of the cases and the corresponding data from among others Facebook and Twitter. The following step of the analysis is solely focussed on the adjoining film music industry, in which the attention is paid to the promotion of the film music and also the promotion through the official social media channels of the cases. -

www.Asia Times.US NRI Global Edition Email: [email protected] September 2016 Vol 7, Issue 9 Zakir Naik: What did I do to earn the tags of ‘Dr Terror’, ‘Hate Monger’? Islamic scholar Dr. Zakir Naik wrote an open letter to Indians called ‘Five Questions and an Appeal’ where he lamented about being targeted and labeled a ‘terror preacher’ in India. In the letter, Naik said, “Of 150 countries where I’m respected and my talks are welcomed, I’m being called a terrorist influencer in my own country. What an irony. Why now, when I’ve been doing the same thing for over 25 years?”. Naik, 51, is an Islamic preacher, who founded the Islamic Research Foundation in 1991 when he started Dawah or religious preaching. His lectures mostly revolve around how Islam is superior to all other faiths. While he claims to be an advocate of interfaith dialogue, his preaching’s’ reinforce all the stereotypes which exist against Muslims. Following reports that one of the militants of Dhaka terror attack was inspired by Naik’s misinterpretations of Islam, there are growing demand for strict action against him. In the letter, Naik asks why he has become the enemy number one for the State and Central government. “It has been over two months since the ghastly terror attack in Dhaka, and over one month since I’ve been asking myself what exactly have I done to become the enemy number one of the media as well as the State and Central Gov- ernment,” wrote Naik. × and justice. Four bombs exploded in the upscale resort of Hua Hin, about 200 km (125 miles) south of Bangkok, on Thursday evening and yesterday morning, killing two peo- ple and wounding at least 24. Other blasts hit the tourist island of Phuket, a resort town in Phang Nga province, and Surat Thani, a city that is the gateway to popular islands such as Koh Samui in Thailand’s Gulf. Hua Hin is home to the Klai Kangwon royal palace, which translates as “Far from Worries”, where King Bhumibol Adulayadej, the world’s longest reigning monarch, and his wife, Queen Sirikit, have lived in recent years. Neither were there during the attacks, as both are in hospital in Bangkok. Yesterday was a public holiday in Thailand to mark the queen’s birthday, which is celebrated as Mother’s Day. No group has claimed responsibility, though suspicion could fall on insurgents in Muslim-majority provinces in southern Thailand. Police detained two men for questioning over the attacks on Hua Hin yesterday, said Police Superintendent Sarawut Tankul of the tourist police at the resort. -
