Strategy and Geopolitics of Sea Power Throughout History
Baltic Security & Defence Review Volume 11, Issue 2, 2009 Strategy and Geopolitics of Sea Power throughout History By Ilias Iliopoulos PhD, Professor at the Hellenic Staff College The great master of naval strategy and geopolitics Rear-Admiral Alfred Thayer Mahan famously stated: “Control of the sea by maritime commerce and naval supremacy means predominant influence in the world … (and) is the chief among the merely material elements in the power and prosperity of nations.”1 Some three centuries before Mahan, H. M.’s Servant Sir Walter Raleigh held that “he that commands the sea, commands the trade, and he that is lord of the trade of the world is lord of the wealth of the world.”2 Accordingly, it may be said that even the final collapse of the essentially un-maritime and land-bound Soviet empire at the end of the long 20th century was simply the latest illustration of the strategic advantages of sea power. Like most realist strategists Mahan believed that international politics was mainly a struggle over who gets what, when and how. The struggle could be about territory, resources, political influence, economic advantage or normative interests (values). The contestants were the leaders of traditional nation-states; military and naval forces were their chief instrument of policy. Obviously, sea power is about naval forces – and coastguards, marine or civil-maritime industries and, where relevant, the contribution of land and air forces. Still, it is more than that; it is about geography, geopolitics, geo- strategy, geo-economics and geo-culture; it is about the sea-based capacity of a state to determine or influence events, currents and developments both at sea and on land. -

Some Observations on the Weddings of Tokugawa Shogun’s Daughters – Part 1 Abstract In this study I shall discuss the marriage politics of Japan's early ruling families (mainly from the 6th to the 12th centuries) and the adaptation of these practices to new circumstances by the leaders of the following centuries. Marriage politics culminated with the founder of the Edo bakufu, the first shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616). To show how practices continued to change, I shall discuss the weddings given by the fifth shogun sunaT yoshi (1646-1709) and the eighth shogun Yoshimune (1684-1751). The marriages of Tsunayoshi's natural and adopted daughters reveal his motivations for the adoptions and for his choice of the daughters’ husbands. The marriages of Yoshimune's adopted daughters show how his atypical philosophy of rulership resulted in a break with the earlier Tokugawa marriage politics. -

About the Foroughi Cup and About the Seven Planets in the Ancient World
Archaeoastronomy and Ancient Technologies 2018, 6(2), 31–37; http://aaatec.org/art/a_cm2 www.aaatec.org ISSN 2310-2144 About the Foroughi Cup and about the seven planets in the Ancient World Mario Codebò 1, Henry De Santis 2 1 Archeoastronomia Ligustica, S.I.A., SAIt, Genoa, Italy; E-Mail: [email protected] 2 Archeoastronomia Ligustica, S.I.A., SAIt, Genoa, Italy; E-Mail: [email protected] Abstract The Foroughi Cup is an artefact of the 8th century BC of Aramaic cultural context, inside which images of stars and constellations are reproduced. In this study of ours we start from the conclusions reached by Amadasi Guzzo and Castellani in their two works of 2005 and 2006 and we add some further considerations and identifications. We then explain the hypothesis that some cultures of the Ancient World include seven planets, excluding the Moon and the Sun, because Mercury and Venus, always visible only at dawn or at sunset, were perhaps considered four different planets. Finally, we propose the thesis that their evil character depends, as for every new star (novae, supernovae, comets, etc.), on the fact that they alter the synchrony of the cosmos with their variable motion (variable declination heaven bodies). Keywords: Foroughi Cup, planets, Moon, Sun, Aramaic culture. The Foroughi Cup The Foroughi Cup is a bronze artefact (fig. 1), dated to the first half of the 1st millennium BC, containing in its concave interior a representation of the celestial vault and seven very small Aramaic inscriptions, only three of which are quite legible: ŠMŠ = Sun (above the representation of the Sun, in which a lion's head is also engraved); ŠHR = Moon (above the representation of the crescent of the Moon); hypothetically R'Š ŠR' = Head of the Bull (above the bucranium). -

Modernized text Scripture Hymns (1762), Vol. 21 [Baker list, #249] Editorial Introduction: Charles Wesley was sidelined in Bristol for much of 1760–61 with an extended illness (the gout). He frequently visited Bath nearby to drink the waters and he occupied his time writing a series of verse arising from reading through the entire Bible. Unlike his earlier work on the psalms and other scripture passages, which sought mainly to paraphrase scripture in verse, most of the work collected in this two-volume set is reflective in tone. The short hymns often pick up a single theme provoked by the passage being read, with emphasis on relevance to the current struggles in the Methodist movement. As Charles notes in the preface (included in volume 1), many of the hymns focus on current debates about Christian perfection. Charles also notes in the preface that the reflections on scripture contained in these short hymns were often suggested by reading alongside of scripture some commentaries on the text (particularly by Johann Bengel, Robert Gell and Matthew Henry). As he had done with his two-volume collection HSP (1749), Charles sought copyright protection for this two-volume set, registering it at Stationers Hall on August 23, 1762. While Charles does not provide a table of contents for his volume, we have provided one below, organized by scripture reference, because he occasionally gives a hymn on a particular verse out of sequence. Edition: Charles Wesley. Short Hymns on Select Passages of the Holy Scriptures. 2 vols. Bristol: Farley, 1762. Notes: John Wesley’s personal copy of this two-volume set is present in the remnants of his personal library at Wesley’s House, London (shelfmark, J. -
