Welcome to the Dubuque Museum of Art’s 43rd Annual Gala, Art Auction and Raffle - the traditional kickoff to the holiday season in Dubuque.

We are grateful to you for attending and supporting the Museum on this night and throughout the year. We are particularly grateful to our donating artists, sponsors and volunteers, who help make this event - and, in turn, many wonderful Museum programs - possible.

With this year’s theme “Night Out in NYC”, we pay tribute to the enduring legacy and influence of artist Grant Wood, on the eve of a major exhibition of his work at the Whitney Museum of American Art in spring 2018. Dubuque will be well-represented in this historic project, with a total of five works - including two on loan from the Carnegie- Stout Public Library - selected for exhibition.

Tonight we also celebrate the growing role of the Museum in our community. Over the past year, we have: undertaken a number of new programs, including an art and healing initiative and pilot project serving veterans; collaborated with other arts and service organizations; and partnered extensively with the schools. We were honored to earn a commendation from the Dubuque Community School Board this spring for some of these efforts.

Over the last year we also: brought in popular traveling exhibits, such as this past spring’s Pop Art exhibit and summer presentation of artist portraits; made significant upgrades to our children’s art room; and staged our most competitive juried exhibit of regional artists to date.

Fulfilling our mission and vision takes many resources. With the funds raised this evening, you help to ensure that every community member can experience art in deeply personal and meaningful ways, and that the visual arts and artists continue to flourish in Greater Dubuque.

Thank you for demonstrating your support tonight by bidding generously and often. This cause is critical to the Museum and for our community.

Arts & Healing I Arts & Wellness

DuMA has been developing a focus on arts, wellness and healing since participating in Starry Nights, a benefit for mental health awareness held in Dubuque in 2016.

Telling Stories Visually: The Living History Veterans Project, carried out in collaboration with the Jeffrey Dodge Center at the University of Dubuque, is the first of these efforts. A second project with Compass Counseling and Behavorial Health will get underway in January.

Building on these efforts, DuMA will continue to incorporate the visual arts, music, and creative writing into therapies that may positively affect mental health outcomes and quality of life for adults. Much research has demonstrated the positive benefits of the arts in helping to reduce stress and anxiety and enhance coping behaviors.
