Hanbury Hall: Rear of hall Join us for a rare opportunity to explore the life and work of George London and his influential role in the development of English garden design. George London (c. 1650-1714), one of the most influential nurserymen and garden designers during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, was originally apprenticed to John Rose, gardener to Charles II and the Earl of Sussex. He succeeded Rose as gardener to Henry Compton, the Bishop of London at Fulham Palace, a keen botanist and important political figure. An appointment as superintendent of the Royal Gardens swiftly followed. He went on to design gardens for many members of the aristocracy and royal family, incorporating the fashionable formality of the French and Dutch gardens with such notable elements as elaborate parterres, tree-lined avenues, topiary and ornate water features. He also founded the renowned Brompton Park Nursery, and with Henry Wise, monopolised the industry with a comprehensive landscape and nursery supply service. Unlike many subsequent garden designers, little remains of George London’s gardens, which were overtaken by the ‘landscape movement’ as it gathered pace in the late 18th century. The study day will focus on George London’s mastery of garden design, his originality and versatility spanning over three decades. The Bishop of London, colonialism and transatlantic slavery: Research brief for a temporary exhibition, spring 2022 and information to input into permanent displays Introduction Fulham Palace is one of the earliest and most intriguing historic powerhouses situated alongside the Thames and the last one to be fully restored. It dates back to 704AD and for over thirteen centuries was owned by the Bishop of London. The Palace site is of exceptional archaeological interest and has been a scheduled monument since 1976. The buildings are listed as Grade I and II. The 13 acres of botanical gardens, with plant specimens introduced here from all over the world in the late 17th century, are Grade II* listed. Fulham Palace Trust has run the site since 2011. We are restoring it to its former glory so that we can fulfil our vision to engage people of all ages and from all walks of life with the many benefits the Palace and gardens have to offer. Our site-wide interpretation, inspired learning and engagement programmes, and richly-textured exhibitions reveal insights, through the individual stories of the Bishops of London, into over 1,300 years of English history. In 2019 we completed a £3.8m capital project, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, to restore and renew the historic house and garden. The Trust opens the Palace and gardens seven days a week free of charge. In 2019/20 we welcomed 340,000 visitors. We manage a museum, café, an award-winning schools programme (engaging over 5,640 pupils annually) and we stage a wide range of cultural events.

The Bishop of London, colonialism and transatlantic slavery For the provision of freelance specialist research consultancy services to Fulham Palace to support the development of permanent interpretation and a temporary exhibition Background Fulham Palace is a truly remarkable place. For centuries, this Grade I Listed building situated in extensive grounds by the River Thames was the country residence of the Bishops of London with an important archaeological history. The Palace is now managed by Fulham Palace Trust, which is inspired by a vision to restore our nationally significant historic buildings and grounds to their original beauty and to provide outstanding facilities for the local community and visitors from farther afield. Last year the Trust delivered The project focussed on bringing the iconic Tudor Quadrangle and key historic rooms, such as the great hall, back to life by conserving the building and dressing the rooms to show how the Bishops of London would have lived and worked here across the centuries. It delivered new museum rooms and enhanced the botanical gardens, including re- establishing some of the exotic species that were first introduced to Europe by the botanist and bishop Henry Compton in the late 17th and early 18th century. A core element of the Project was an 18 month volunteer archive research and interpretation workstream. Led by a freelance archivist, this undertook further investigation of sources at Fulham Palace as well as in external partner archives to provide more evidence to support our structured interpretation plan for the Palace. Our requirement The Trust is now inviting consultant freelance researchers to submit proposals to develop on this work by identifying the evidenced stories that we should be sharing with our visitors on the theme of the Bishop of London, colonialism and transatlantic slavery.
