  • Q-Link on Major Golf Tours
Q-LINK ON MAJOR GOLF TOURS The Q-Link pendant is currently worn by more than 300 touring professional golfers on the four major golf tours (PGA, Champions, LPGA, and European). It was worn by players during victories in more than 10 major golf championships. It was worn by the members of the European Ryder Cup team when it beat the U.S. in 2002. It was worn when the decades old PGA 72 hole scoring record was broken by Mark Calcavecchia. Congratulations go out to some of the recent tour winners, all of whom wore the Q-Link pendant during their victories: the 2005 Byron Nelson Classic (Ted Purdy) the 2005 U.S. Senior Open Championship (Allen Doyle) the 2005 U.S. Women's Open (Birdie Kim) the 2005 Women's British Open (Jeong Jang) and the 2005 Women's World Match Play Championship (Marisa Baena). • Clutch Strokes: Performance Under Pressure in Golf
COLLEGE OF THE HOLY CROSS Clutch Strokes: Performance Under Pressure in Golf Jeffrey Paadre This paper examines 10 years worth of PGA Tour Tournament data in order to examine whether or not clutch performance exists during the final round of a tournament. After controlling scores for differences in course difficulty, the paper finds no evidence of tangible clutch performance. The authors find that the perception of clutch performance is more likely attributable to talent differential between golfers. Assuming a normal distribution of golfer talent, it is possible that Tiger Woods can outshoot his opponents on the final day of a tournament as well as lose his lead to his competitors. Motivation and Literature In professional sports, heroes can be created through the concept of clutch performance. The perception of clutch performance occurs when an athlete raises his or her performance to an extraordinary level during the most important moments of a sporting event. Athletes such as David Ortiz and Adam Vinatieri have been immortalized as legends due to their consistent ability to help their teams win baseball and football games during important games where the outcome was hanging in the balance. Conversely Bill Buckner and Scott Norwood are amongst the unfortunate athletes burdened with reputations as choke artists based on their inability to perform well when their teams needed a high performance the most. One of the challenges that accompanies examining performance under pressure lies within trying to define which performances constitute clutch performance. For example, in 2005 John Henry, the owner of the Boston Red Sox, presented David Ortiz with a plaque inscribed “David Ortiz: The Greatest Clutch Hitter in the History of the Boston Red Sox”.

  • Wiratchant Wins Under Floodlights in Sharjah Senior Golf Masters Play-Off
10/03/2018 Wiratchant Wins under Floodlights in Sharjah Senior Golf Masters Play-off Thaworn Wiratchant deafeated Clark Dennis and Peter Fowler in a four-hole play-off at the Sharjah Senior Golf Masters presented by Shurooq to win back-to-back Staysure Tour titles at the first event of the 2018 season. Winner of the 2017 season-ending MCB Tour Championship in Mauritius, the Thai made par on the 18th at the fourth attempt, beating Dennis who kept pace with him for three extra holes at Sharjah Golf & Shooting Club. Fowler was knocked out of the play-off after a bogey on the first extra hole, leaving Dennis and Wiratchant to do battle under floodlights as darkness fell on the Emirate of Sharjah. “It was really difficult out there today,” said Wiratchant. “The first day was easier because I played in the morning and the greens weren’t as hard. The pin positions were tough today. “I had to be so patient during the play-off, it was tough playing the 18th four times. I have never played in the dark before, it was tough to adjust and not lose concentration. “I am so happy to win my second Staysure Tour title. I want to be consistent and have a really good year.” Wiratchant started the day tied for the lead with Dennis on 11 under par, but the pair found themselves trailing Fowler, who carded a course record of 64 in Friday’s second round, for most of the afternoon on the nine-hole Peter Harradine-designed layout.
