Summer 2013 Reading Assignments for IB Language A DP (grades 11 & 12) DP1 SL & HL and DP2)

Texts: DP 1: The Complete Short Stories Edgar Allen Poe * The specific story titles are listed at the end of this document. There will be different assignments for HL and SL DP1 classes this summer and next year. Read the entire assignment sheet and do only what you are responsible for, depending on whether you have enrolled in HL or SL Language A. DP 2: Midaq Alley Naguib Mahfouz DP 2 students should purchase a copy of Midaq Alley before returning to school. You do not need to begin reading the novel. We will read the novel as a group once school resumes.

Students are responsible for their own copies of Midaq Alley and Poe’s short stories. Both are widely available as used paperbacks. Copies are also available in most libraries. However students will need a copy in which they can write and annotate during class, so it is necessary to have one’s own copy. Poe’s stories can be downloaded free from the internet at poestories.com/read

 DP 1 SL & HL: As you read, write a process journal of at least 10 sentences, describing your reactions to stories. Your process journal should not include plot summaries. You are to reflect on and react to what you have read, not simply summarize what you have read. You should write two reflective journals for each story. SL 6 reflections, 3 stories; HL 10 reflections, 5 stories.

 Be prepared to turn share aloud and turn in this work on the first day of your Language A class.

 Poe story titles: The Tell-tale Heart, Hop-Frog, , The Fall of the House of Usher, The Black Cat, The Angel of the Odd, The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Purloined Letter, Ms. Found in Bottle, The Masque of the Red Death HL students should read and write their reflections on the first five stories before returning to school. We will read and study the other five as a group after we return to school. SL students should read and write their reflections on the first three stories before returning to school. We will read the next two as a group after school has resumed.

 All DP 2 students should continue reading and monitoring “Doonesbury” and “Story Corps.” You are to write a 10-sentence reflection on each of five “Doonesbury” strips. In your reflection identify the social-political issue being addressed and explain how it is being presented. You should also listen to 10 “Story Corps” and write a reflection of 10 sentences about each one. What is the issue being discussed? What do you learn about the speaker? Why is this particular “Story Corps” worth listening to and reflecting on?  Have a great vacation! Contact me at [email protected] during the summer for any questions or problems. You can also call any time you like, though I will be away in late June and early July. If you want to meet at VCU, VUU, or U of R during the summer, please give me several days notice.
