BUILDERS OF COLORADO OFFICE OF ARCHEOLOGY AND HISTORIC PRESERVATION BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH COLORADO HISTORICAL SOCIETY Firm: Baldwin Locomotive Works Location: Philadelphia (Eddystone, PA, in 1912) Operating Dates: 1831-1956 Principals: Matthias W. Baldwin Information Jeweler and silversmith Matthias Baldwin founded the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1831. The original manufacturing plant was on Broad Street in Philadelphia where the company did business for 71 years until moving in 1912 to Eddystone, PA. Baldwin made its reputation building steam locomotives for the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe, and many of the other North American railroads, as well as for overseas railroads in England, France, India, Haiti and Egypt. Baldwin locomotives found their way onto the tracks of most Colorado railroads, both standard and narrow gauge. Baldwin built a huge number of 4-4-0 American type locomotives, but was perhaps best known for the 2-8-2 Mikado (D&RGW No. 491) and 2-8-0 Consolidation types (D&RGW No. 346 and DSP&P No. 191).1 It was also well known for the unique cab-forward 4-8-8-2 articulated locomotives built for the Southern Pacific Railroad and the massive 2-10-2 engines for the Santa Fe Railroad. One of Baldwin's last new and improved locomotive designs was the 4-8-4 (Northern) locomotive (Santa Fe No. 2911). In 1939, Baldwin offered its first standard line of diesel locomotives, all designed for rail yard service. Two years later, America's entry into World War II destroyed Baldwin's diesel development program when the War Production Board dictated that ALCO (American Locomotive Company) and Baldwin produce only diesel-electric yard switching engines. -

E-mail: [email protected] ASSESSING STEAM LOCOMOTIVE DYNAMICS AND RUNNING SAFETY BY COMPUTER SIMULATION Summary. Steam locomotives are preserved on heritage railways and also occasionally used on mainline heritage trips, but since they are only partially balanced reciprocating piston engines, damage is made to the railway track by dynamic impact, also known as hammer blow. While causing a faster deterioration to the track on heritage railways, the steam locomotive may also cause deterioration to busy mainline tracks or tracks used by high speed trains. This raises the question whether heritage operations on mainline can be done safely and without influencing the operation of the railways. If the details of the dynamic interaction of the steam locomotive's components are examined with computerised calculations they show differences with the previous theories as the smaller components cannot be disregarded in some vibration modes. A particular narrow gauge steam locomotive Gr-319 was analyzed and it was found, that the locomotive exhibits large dynamic forces on the track, much larger than those given by design data, and the safety of the ride is impaired. Large unbalanced vibrations were found, affecting not only the fatigue resistance of the locomotive, but also influencing the crew and passengers in the train consist. Developed model and simulations were used to check several possible parameter variations of the locomotive, but the problems were found to be in the original design such that no serious improvements can be done in the space available for the running gear and therefore the running speed of the locomotive should be limited to reduce its impact upon the track. -

Each of the four 7ft 6in rods weighs around two hundredweight and after forging, extensive machining and heat treatment, the four cost around £22,000 to manufacture. These rods are vital components within the £150,000 valve gear and motion assemblies, which are now the focus of work on Tornado at the Trust’s Darlington Locomotive Works. The Trust has also started work on the fitting of the rest of the outside motion. The bushes for the connecting rods are currently being machined at Ian Howitt Ltd, Wakefield and one side of the locomotive has now been fitted with a mock-up of parts of its valve gear. This is to enable accurate measurements to be taken to set the length of the eccentric rod as the traditional method of heating the rod to stretch/shrink it used when the original Peppercorn A1s were built in 1948/9 is no longer recommended as it can affect the rod’s metallurgical properties. -

February 26, 1929 was the day President Calvin Coolidge signed the bill creating Grand Teton National Park. Native Americans might not see the “Big 80” as such a big deal. Their ancestors are known to have summered in Lupine Meadows 12,000 years ago. And who could blame them? Three great rivers of the American West all have major tributaries with headwaters in the mountains around Jackson Hole. Water meant life in the West then as it does today. The Mountain Men, beginning with John Colter, arrived in the first half of the nineteenth century. Later days brought such trappers and explorers as Jedediah Smith, Jim Bridger and David (Davey) Jackson for whom the valley, or hole, was named. The late 1800s saw British men of leisure – gentleman hunters – trekking about the countryside with “an eye for the curious and beautiful,” wrote Jack Turner in his book Teewinot. No better words than curious and beautiful could be applied to the Teton Mountain Range as its glorious protrusions skirt the sky in close-up view of all passersby. You can return again and again for… well, twelve thousand years, and the range will never look the same. It is now possible to gain greater understanding of the park environment and enjoy your time in the Tetons even more by spending time with what Turner calls the “most recent tribes” – rangers and guides. -

Steam Locomotive Firebox Explosion on the Gettysburg Railroad near Gardners, Pennsylvania Leadership ViTS Meeting 6 September 2005 Bryan O’Connor, Chief Office of Safety and Mission Assurance Accident Timeline Place: Gettysburg Railroad near Gardners, PA Accident Date: June 16, 1995 Gettysburg 1278 @ Gettysburg Oct 1988 The Accident: • Steam locomotive 1278 with six passenger cars had completed two excursions and was preparing for a third and final excursion for the day. • During slow climb up moderate grade, the boiler exploded, seriously burning the engineer and two firemen. • . (2) Events Associated with Proximate Cause • Operators began climb with too little water in boiler • Water-level continued to drop and by the time the locomotive had crested the grade the crownsheet of boiler was not covered by water and failed due to thermal overstress. • Failure of crownsheet opened boiler to the firebox (atmosphere) and the water in boiler flashed into high pressure steam. • Steam exploded through firebox door into the locomotive cab, seriously burning the engineer (third degree burns over 65% of body) and two firemen. (3) Events Associated with Proximate Cause Approx. 175 psi This figure is exaggerated to show low water conditions, in locomotive 1278 the lowest gage cock was 3.25 inches above the highest point of the crownsheet and the water glass was 3.125 inches above the highest point of the crownsheet (4) Contributing Factors • Prior to operation the feed pump gauge had been removed. • Preparing to ascend grade first fireman shut off the feed pump to the boiler because a leaking check valve between the feed-pump and the boiler could potentially cause slippage on driving wheels. -

Although fire tube boilers from earliest days have been the norm for railway locomotives, water tube boilers could also very occasionally be found in locomotives. The well-known Sentinel shunters had water tube boilers a little bigger but otherwise similar to the company’s steam wagon boilers, and Sir Nigel Gresley on the LNER experimented with a ‘Yarrow’ type boiler but dropped the idea and fitted Britain’s only 4-6-4 express engine with a traditional loco boiler. For shipping, various forms of the classic marine multi-furnace fire tube ‘Scotch’ boiler was a norm to the last, and vertical fire tube types were a standard for small steam launches, but alongside these a huge range of highly efficient water tube types was under constant development resulting in many different configurations. -

For over eighty years, Denver’s Union Station bore witness to a procession of arrivals and departures that transformed the Rocky Mountain West. From 19th century regional gateway to 21st century multi-model hub, this film tells the story of the grand era of railroad travel and the awe inspiring structure that stands today at the crossroads of past glory and future promise. Award-winning filmmaker, Jim Havey, will introduce the DVD program and discuss the future plans for this grand community icon. Please come join us for an enjoyable, educational evening at Christ Episcopal Church at 2950 South University Boulevard, University at Bates, where there is plenty of off street parking at the rear of the complex.
