Medications After a DCR (dacryocystorhinostomy)

The surgery that was preformed was a DCR (dacryocystorhinostomy). This means that Dr. Lane had to create a new tear drain between the eye and the nose due to an obstruction. Dr. Lane would recommend using the following items to help maximize your healing.

Below are the medications that will be called into your pharmacy:

1. Bacitracin or Polysporin ophthalmic ointment Apply to the incisions, with a clean finger, four times a day until your post-operative appointment

2. Flonase nasal spray Use the prescription nasal spray twice a day on the operated nostril until your post-operative appointment

How to use Flonase: Close the non-operative nostril with one finger. Tilt your head forward slightly and, keeping the bottle upright, carefully insert the Flonase nasal applicator into the other nostril. Start to breathe in through your nose, and while breathing in press firmly and quickly down one time on the applicator to release the spray.

At a store or grocery store, please purchase the following product:

1. NeilMed Sinus Rinse Use twice a day for four weeks after your surgery

Directions for use: STEP ONE- Fill the clean bottle with distilled water, commercially bottled water, or previously boiled and cooled down water. Do not use tap or faucet water for dissolving the mixture unless it has been previously boiled. STEP TWO- Cut the Sinus Rinse mixture packet, and pour its contents into the bottle. Tighten the cap and tub on the bottle. Place one finger over the tip of the cap and shake the bottle gently to dissolve the mixture. STEP THREE- Standing in front of a sink, bend forward and tilt your head down. Keep your mouth open, without holding your breath; place the cap snugly against your nasal passage. Squeeze the bottle gently until the starts draining from the opposite nasal passage. Some may drain from your mouth. Keep squeezing the bottle gently until at least ¼ to ½ o the bottle is used. Do not swallow the solution. STEP FOUR- Blow your nose very gently, without pinching the nose completely to avoid pressure on eardrums. If tolerable, sniff any residual solution remaining in the nasal passage once or twice. STEP FIVE- Clean the bottle and cap by rinsing under water. Add a few drops of dish washing or baby . Attach the cap to the bottle; hold your finger over the opening of the cap and shake the bottle. Squeeze the bottle hard to allow the soapy solution to clean the interior of the tube and the cap. Empty out the bottle completely and place on a clean paper towel to dry.
