League1 Ontario continues to accept applications for expansion teams for the upcoming 2021 season. While nothing has been announced by either team it is widely believed that both 1812FC from and Peterborough’s Electric City FC have applied for membership. There has been no announcements as of yet regarding the line up of clubs for next year.

League1 club news has seen Prostars FC and CK Football Solutions announce a long-term cooperation. According to their announcement they are one of the few Canadian clubs that have the distinct title "Member Association Status Level 1 Club" of the Association. CK Soccer Solutions, founded in 2017 by Clemens Krueger, who has many years’ experience with German professional club management along with excellent network and drives the strategic orientation and organic growth of the agency with exciting projects.

Also they announced that they were happy to appoint and welcome, Kennedi Herrmann as the Director of their up and coming female program. Kennedi has coached for Peel Panthers soccer academy, Erin Mills, Final 3rd soccer (supplemental technical training). She is an ISSA certified personal trainer and holds a bachelor of science degree.

Oakville Blue Devils staff are proud to welcome Khody Ellis as the Academy’s new Strength and Conditioning Coach.

Technical Director Brett Mosen announced on Thursday that the Blue Devils Academy has made a new hiring in the physical fitness department, “the Blue Devils are committed to improving this area, and assist our players in improving this vitally important component of their game.” He believes Ellis is the person for the job because he knows what it takes, “the game at the highest level is a million miles per hour. The fitness levels required are enormous. We believe bringing Khody in to oversee this program will have an impact on the players.”

The 4x All- wanted this role so that he could create a platform that goes beyond the traditional fitness model for all of the OBD academy. “It is my belief that to achieve higher performance in sport you must focus on the total well-being of an athlete. It’s about taking your health and performance to the next level by focusing on movement, mindset, nutrition, and recovery as a whole.”

Khody Ellis is a Strength and Conditioning Coach and Fascial Stretch Therapist at Peaks Lifestyle away from the pitch, and will be bringing the lessons he’s learned professionally to the Blue Devils FC team he knows so well. “For me, it’s about helping all academy players develop a strong educational foundation in safe and effective movement, and mental performance. I can’t express enough how vital strength training is for the development of young athletes, and I am looking forward to being the person to bring this to the club that I love and have dedicated the last 5 years to.”

At the time of going to press there was no information regarding expansion of the Leagues and no news from the PLSQ or the USL League 1. Hopefully there will be more to report as the months go on. BC SOCCER NEWS BC SOCCER ANNOUNCES 2020 AWARD RECIPIENTS

After eight years of dedicated service to the BC Soccer Association, it is with mixed emotions that BC Soccer announces the departure of Lori D’Andrea as Director of Community Development.

With much vigour, Lori joined the Association as a member services intern 8 years ago, before transitioning into a coordinator’s role and then becoming the Member Services Manager. As her responsibilities expanded, so too did her understanding and contribution to the Association. In 2015, she was promoted to the Director of Community Development position where she oversaw the staff in this department and supported not only member services, but also competitions/provincial cups, referee programming, general operations, and judicial.

During her time, Lori has contributed greatly to BC Soccer operations in several key areas including membership support and guidance, governance/ bylaws rules regulations improvements, internal system development (CRM), enhancements to policies and procedures (especially in Judicial), along with programming/event oversight and enhancements. She has also been instrumental in leading the discussion on membership concerns including amalgamation, and private/for-profit inclusion.

“On behalf of the board, staff, membership and soccer community in BC, I want to thank Lori for the valuable contribution she has made to not only better the association but also the sport that she grew up playing and still loves.”, said Jason Elligott, Executive Director. “Her work ethic and detailed understanding will be missed daily”.

In response to being asked what her time with the association mean to her, Lori said, “Over the last 8+ years, I have truly enjoyed my time at BC Soccer. I am thankful that BC Soccer has continually supported me to take on new roles and challenges; and, explore new areas of work. I will be forever grateful for the many people I’ve met and experiences I’ve had, which is why leaving is a little bittersweet, but I’m confident that the association is moving in a positive direction and the future of the game in BC looks bright.”

Lori’s new opportunity is in an industry outside of soccer and her last day was on November 16, 2020. BC SOCCER WELCOMES NEW PRESIDENT AT AGM

Having completed two consecutive two-year terms, outgoing President Kjeld Brodsgaard, chose not to seek re-election. On behalf of our membership and the soccer community in BC, BC Soccer extends sincere thanks to Kjeld for his years of service to the game in BC. With congratulations, BC Soccer announces Gayle Statton, elected by membership as the new BC Soccer President for a three-year term.

Gayle has been a BC Soccer board member for the past two years serving as Chair of the Membership Committee and participating as a member of the Finance and Diversity & Inclusion Committee. She was the Planning Lead for the 2024 Strategic Plan and brings extensive experience as a leader from her time at Coquitlam Metro Ford Soccer Club, where she served in a variety of roles including President. A Coquitlam resident, Gayle was part of the executive that helped lead the merger forming Coquitlam Metro Ford Soccer Club and helped develop the club’s first long-term strategic plan. Statton has spent 40 years in the game as a player, coach, leader, administrator, and volunteer, serving as the Tri-Cities Youth District Chair and successfully helped lobby the City of Coquitlam to plan and build Town Centre Park. Gayle was inducted into the Coquitlam Sports Wall of Fame as a Volunteer of the Year, while also earning the William Azzi Lifetime Achievement Award. She is the Senior Manager in the Corporate Law department at ICBC head office where she has worked for almost 23 years and is married with three adult daughters.

2020 BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND UPDATED ROLES

With congratulations, Chris Appleby was re-elected to the position of Vice President Finance for a three-year term. The AGM also saw the retirement of long-standing director and the Vice President Youth, Rob Lennox. On behalf of our membership and the soccer community in BC, BC Soccer extends sincere thanks to Rob for his years of service to the sport and we look forward to still seeing him on the sidelines. Rob’s departure led to the election of a new Vice President of Youth, Deb Pudek for a one-year term.

The following directors were re-elected to director positions on the following terms:

Francisco Rubio, three-year term Don Moslin, three-year term

Newly elected directors include the following on the stated terms:

John O’Flynn, three-year term Landon Ling, two-year term Peter Lonergan, one-year term BC SOCCER HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCES 2020 INDUCTEES

The Soccer Hall of Fame of British Columbia welcomes 15 outstanding individuals and organizations inducted in 2020. The inductees demonstrate achievement from 1893 to 2014, achievement across the breadth of soccer in BC, and include many true pioneers in their respective fields. Last year’s inaugural Soccer Hall of Fame of BC inductees were those British Columbians who had been previously inducted into the Soccer Hall of Fame. The “Class of 2020” is the first group of inductees to be nominated by and selected by British Columbians themselves.

In 1983, Terry Felix of the Sts’ailes First Nation in Agassiz became the first, First Nations player to play professional soccer in North America and to play for Canada’s MNT. Goalkeeper Wendy Hawthorne won eleven BC provincial championships from 1985 to 2004 and won four national championships. In 1985 George Pakos of Victoria famously scored the two critical goals which took Canada to its so-far only FIFA Men’s World Cup Finals. Cathy Ross played in Canada’s first national women’s team games in 1986, going on to set a then-record streak of 25 straight Canada WNT games. Sergio Zanatta, a stand-out left winger with Columbus FC, won four national championships in the 1960s and 1970s.

Three coaches have been trail-blazers on the sideline. Harry Christie was in effect BC’s first Technical Director in the 1960s and 1970s. Joe Csabai coached high performance adult and youth teams and players from the 1970s on. Shelley Howieson, the first female coach in BC’s Soccer Hall of Fame, paved the way for female coaches, coaching SFU’s women’s team from 1988 to 2014, winning five “Coach of the Year” awards.

Pioneer Builder Robert Adam of Nanaimo led the Nanaimo soccer community in its heyday from the 1890s to the 1920s and was BC Soccer’s First Vice-President in 1904-5. Joining the three referees already in the Hall of Fame, Bob Allen and Dante Maglio were top-flight FIFA List referees in the 1970s and 1980s, officiating NASL games, including play-off Super Bowl Finals and FIFA international tournaments and games.

Two “Teams of Distinction” are true stand-outs. Surrey United Premier Women’s Team 2004-2014 won an unparalleled 11 straight BC championships and finished in the medals in all 11 national championships. From the 1920s to 1970s, BC All-Stars hosted visiting touring professional club teams. The 1957 BC All-Stars stunned the soccer world, delivering “the upset of the century” by defeating Tottenham Hotspur, who had just finished in second place in the English First Division.

Two “Organizations of Distinction” serving the soccer players in their communities for over six decades are inducted in 2020. Cliff Avenue United FC of Burnaby has been a leading boys and girls club since 1956. Nanaimo United FC is a coming together of Nanaimo’s youth soccer club founded in 1923 and the Nanaimo United adult club founded in 1974.

Read the profiles of the careers and achievements of the 15 “Class of 2020” members and the 98 earlier inductees at the Soccer Hall of Fame of BC web-site at https://heritage.bcsoccer.net/hall-of-fame/ . Selection criteria and nomination forms are also posted. Make nominations now for inductions in 2021.

BC SOCCER UNVEILS 2024 STRATEGIC PLAN

The development of BC Soccer's 2024 Strategic Plan was led by the Strategic Planning Working Group, Chaired by board member Gayle Statton. The process included reviewing BC Soccer’s 2016-2019 Strategic Plan, membership feedback surveys from the last five years, Canada Soccer and Via Sport Strategic Plans and directions, and engaging a third-party consultant to survey all members and stakeholders. Engagement also included group sessions with BC Soccer board and staff teams and over 40 one-on-one meetings with targeted members and stakeholders. The development process began in the summer of 2019 and was a thorough process over the last 12 months. BC Soccer’s Board of Directors have approved the plan which will be in effect until December 31, 2024.

Highlights of the plan include updating both the vision and mission statements:

Vision: Positive Soccer Experiences

Mission: Promote Develop and Govern Soccer in British Columbia.

As part of the process, the Association has also defined its core values:

Inclusive - all can participate and unite in soccer in British Columbia

Safe - committed to safe and respectful soccer in British Columbia

Excellence - lead and progress soccer in British Columbia You can download the PDF brochure HERE Collaborative - deliver soccer with members and stakeholders in British Columbia

The 5 specific goals:

3: Strengthen Business Operations and Strive for Governance Excellence: Evolve board & staff to be more strategic and forward-thinking while working with soccer members and stakeholders to improve the game

4: Increase Soccer Interest and Participation: Encourage enjoyment, inclusivity and growth

5: Coach Player and Referee Development: Support retention and development of referees and coaches. BC SOCCER SENDS OUT A COVID-19 UPDATE LIMITING TRAVEL

The BC Health Authority and specifically Dr. Henry, announced added Health Orders on November 19, 2020. We are still awaiting further clarification from ViaSport, the body that provides direction to the sport sector in BC and is the link between the BC Health Authority and the BC Sport Sector. However, based on the information on the BC Government website, specific to “Athletic Activities”, BC Soccer is advising the following for sanctioned soccer activity in BC:

 The Order is effective until December 7, 2020 at midnight.

 The Order applies to all regions of the Province.

 Indoor and Outdoor soccer can occur under the current BC Soccer Phase 2 Guidelines (where soccer has been since the cohort model was introduced) with the following added restrictions:

 No spectators are permitted.

 Player travel (and refereeing assignments) must be limited to stay within each city/municipality. In the case where there is a city and municipality or two or more municipalities in the same area, we consider them combined as one (i.e. Township of Langley and City of Langley are considered one). For clarity, this means player travel (and referee assignments) to, from, and between cities/municipalities can not occur. Location is based on the individual’s primary residence. The only player exemption is noted on the BC Government website.

NOTE: soccer decision making occurs at all jurisdiction levels; be it player/parent, team, club, district, league, provincial, and at the national level. Provincially, soccer in BC can continue to occur under BC Soccer’s Phase 2 Guidelines (with the above temporary restrictions). Importantly, decisions at the team, club, district, and/or league levels also impact soccer. Field and facility owner decisions, such as municipalities, also affect soccer activity/delivery, with the decision-maker being the player/parent/participant and their choice to participate.

We will continue to liaise with ViaSport and when we receive further clarification and updates, we will share with the members and affiliated clubs accordingly. NEWS FROM THE FRASER VALLEY SOCCER LEAGUE, METRO WOMEN’S SOCCER LEAGUE AND VANCOUVER METRO SOCCER LEAGUES

The Fraser Valley Soccer League had to pause operations due to the surge in COVID-19 cases in the province. Due to the increase in cases across British Columbia they paused play for 2 weeks. The League’s original plan was to hold back the fixtures to the last weekend of November.

The Metro Women’s Soccer League had to pause operations due to the surge in COVID-19 cases in the province. In a statement on their website the league said.

Further to our email sent out to all team contacts on Saturday, November 7th the MWSL would like to clarify our stance on the current Public Health Order (PHO). As a league that encompasses both health regions and play between the two health regions the MWSL made the decision to suspend game play for the duration of the current health order. The order is in effect from November 7, 2020 at 10:00 pm to November 23, 2020 at 12:00 pm

There are questions and confusion about the PHO and the effect of outdoors sports but the ban regarding travel between the two health regions is very clear. Our league encompasses both health regions with many teams that have players living in both regions. This means that travel between the regions will occur even if we only cancelled games based on their team’s home field. The League does not have the resources to audit the addresses of every team member attending each game to ensure that travel between regions will not be breached. This PHO clearly states “Travel for sports into or out of the Vancouver Coastal and Fraser Health regions is suspended for two weeks”. On Sunday, November 8, Public Health clarified the PHO stating that the ban on gatherings from people outside your household includes outdoor gatherings as well. With all this in mind, the MWSL made the difficult decision to suspend play for two weeks with the hopes that this break will ease the spread so that we can return to playing.

This decision may vary from other soccer leagues as each league has individual circumstances regarding playing in multiple regions or just one region, whether players live where they play or how they address scenarios where players that may play on a team in another region from where they live. When making decisions for the League and its members, we do not wait to see what the other leagues are doing before we make any decision for the Metro Women’s League which will always take into consideration the health and safety of our members in their participation of soccer

The Board is looking at different scenarios to complete the current mini Fall Season so that we can get all of our scheduled games played before moving into the mini Winter Season. We will communicate further once all options have been reviewed and decisions have been made.

The Vancouver Metro Soccer League made it to the semi final stage of their Cohort Cup tournaments. They have now all been held back until the first week of December. VANCOUVER ISLAND SOCCER LEAGUE OCTOBER ROUND UP By Vince Greco @vincenzo25

Match week 6 fully complete as the Province takes a turn with recent COVID spikes on the Mainland. We are fortunate to be doing well presently through Island Health. Here is what happened this past weekend in the Island's top flight, Division 1.

Friday started out with friendships being renewed between Cowichan & Westcastle. While some of the personnel has changed, memories have not. Cowichan earned their first points of the season with a 2-0 win over the boys from Westshore. Scoring for Cowichan was Travis Brown and Thompson Nelson added one in the last moments of the game. Earning the shutout for The Bumblebees was Braeden Nash.

Saturday saw Lakehill host Powell River Villa at Braefoot Park, and it did not go well for the Rowell River team. A 8-0 victory for the Saanich based team had Daniel Zadravec with the shutout. Scoring for Lakehill was Jon Shah, Dorian Colopisis, Andres Algarin, Simon Norgrove, Jake Dziwenka, and Blair Sturrock with 3.

Saturday also saw Saanich based team Gorge FC defeat Comox Valley Utd by score of 3-2. Comox goals were both scored by Joe Butcher. Scoring for Gorge was Chase Haagensen, and Matteo Ruffolo with a pair.

Saturday finished up with Bays Utd blanking Juan de Fuca Allflows by score of 1-0. Scoring the loan goal of the game was Salem Almardy of Bays. Notching the shutout was Keeper Ethan May.

The Highlanders & Nanaimo had the weekend off.

After a pretty wet and windy set of days, we were happy to report that all three VISL Division 1 games were played in Matchweek 7. It was not a weekend to be a home team as all of those teams ended up losing their respective matches. Here is how it all broke down:

Things started off in Comox where the defeated Comox Valley by score of 4-1. The loan goal scorer for the home team was the goal scoring leader Grayson Chalifoux. Scoring for the Highlanders was Dieu-Merci Michel, Matthew Plaath, and Lachlan Will x 2.

The first game at Westhills had home team Juan de Fuca Allflows drop a 4-1 decision to Nanaimo Utd. A closer match till the later stages as Nanaimo scored a couple goals in the last 4 minutes. Nanaimo goals were scored by Niko Cristante, Jonathan McKenzie, and game MVP Colin Jacques. The Allflows loan marker was scored by Chris Wardle.

The last game of the weekend saw Lakehill defeat Westcastle by score of 2-1. Lakehill could have finished off the game earlier, but somehow Westcastle hung around and almost snuck a point away from the game. Lakehill goals were scored by Blair Sturrock and Andres Algarin. The Westcastle goal was scored by Maslah Hassan Farah.

Cowichan and Powell River did not play because of crossing Health Authority regulations. Bays and Gorge had the weekend off.

Well, some late week rescheduling allowed the bulk of VISL games to continue on Matchweek 8, however the top flight, Division 1, only had 2 games that could take place. Because of cohorts, and the new restriction on travelling, several games had to be postponed. There were a couple games that could take place, and here is what happened, and safe to say that many were shocked.

Friday opened up with a game at Oak Bays High where Bays United hosted Lakehill. It was undefeated vs Defending Division Champions, and undefeated won by score of 4-1. Scoring for Bays (all in the first half) was 2nd year standouts Salem Almardy, and Kobe Greaves, while cagey veteran Patrick Nelson added a pair. Adding the single for Lakehill in the second half was Cody Gysbers.

Saturday saw the Victoria Highlanders host Gorge FC at Goudy Stadium. The Highlanders exploded for 5 goals and defeated Gorge by score of 5- 0. The Highlander goals were scored by Matthew Plaath, and both Stuart Klenner and Lachlan Will had 2 each. Recording the shutout for the Highlanders was Marko Ilich.

The next 2 weeks will be interesting as some teams will not be able to participate because of the travel restrictions. Currently Comox, Nanaimo, and Cowichan are only able to do what Powell River has been doing the past 2 weeks...... practice at their local park. Hopefully we stay on the right path and we can have them participate post Dec 7 deadline...... or even sooner. Strange times. We are still thankful and fortunate to be playing the game, and all the while staying healthy and playing safely. Playing outdoors has most likely helped in keeping our COVID numbers down. In the place of the year where we would have seen the mid way point; obviously not the case in this very strange year of top flight amateur soccer on Vancouver Island. Division 1 has been anything but standard this year, and this past weekend was just another example of that. With travel restrictions in place, the schedule was light, and here is how the 2 games panned out on Matchweek 9.

The Friday match ended up being a forfeit as Lakehill chose not to participate. It goes into the record books as a 3-0 win for the Westcastle team that is also based out of .

Saturday had the only other divisional matchup as Victoria Highlanders defeated Juan de Fuca Allflows by the score of 5-3. Highlander goals were scored by Matthew Plaath, Stuart Klenner x 2, and Lachlan Will x 2. Scoring all 3 goals for JDF in a losing effort was Ori Fisher.

The big story of the weekend was the official; announcement of the plans for a VISL Field Turf. Joining forces with School District #61, it is official - our community is working towards the dream for a facility at Spectrum High School. We encourage all of the community to check out https:// vislturf.ca/ and donate if possible!

After years of planning & saving, the VISL has finally joined forces with a Saanich based school to create a "Home for the VISL". Plans are underway, and Provincial & Federal grants have been submitted. The Island sporting community is that much closer to building 2 all weather fields at Spectrum Community High School in School District #61.

We have partnered up with Indigenous groups, we have support from Kid Sport & hope to provide an option for the Canada Para National Team. Besides soccer, this project will benefit many sports and activities. This project will directly benefit 20,000 soccer players from youth boys & girls, to adult men & women. This will not only benefit Saanich residents, but everybody up and down the Island.

Not an inexpensive project. A cost of roughly 3.5 million dollars, maximum grants of 2.25 million dollars = the need to come up with 1.25 million dollars at minimum. We have the support from Saanich Mayor & Council, and we are prepared to go full out to make this dream a reality. This project will be a first of it's kind on the Island. Besides the 2 turf fields, the plan is to have a learning center as well. This will act as storage and washrooms on the main floor, and a large working room on the upper floor - ideal for classroom learning and a meeting space.

Here is what we have started in order to get some funds coming in. We are happy to accept larger donations as well, please contact directly to discuss.

If you are able to donate, please do so by submitting your name and contact info at www.vislturf.ca. This will allow you to be part of something special for years to come. Feel free to etransfer to [email protected] or contact us for a cheque donation.

Thanks for supporting the local grass roots soccer league from a distance as we are not able to have spectators at this time. We hope the current COVID status improves, and we can move towards a new normal sooner than later.

"We're very excited to build on the success of our partnership with the Saskatchewan Soccer Association," said Axel Schuster, Whitecaps FC chief executive officer & sporting director. "We share common goals to develop and provide opportunities for Canadian players, and we hope that the success of Thomas Hasal motivates more young talent from Saskatchewan to follow his path from first kick to our first team." "We are very proud that our provincial system aligns directly with the Canada Soccer pathway through our partnership with Vancouver Whitecaps FC," noted Rahim Mohamed, SSA director of soccer. "This partnership provides Saskatchewan players, coaches, and member organizations opportunity for support, guidance, and an aligned pathway for aspiring players. In addition to the player/coach opportunities in Saskatchewan, we are planning to utilize this partnership to provide even more opportunities for coach development in Vancouver - when it is safe to do so - and plan to share organizational best practices."

Ontario Soccer, in consultation with Canada Soccer and the Government of Ontario, continues to monitor the most recent developments surrounding the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the resulting public health crisis and Ontario Soccer’s Return to Play Plan. The Government of Ontario announced that, as of November 23, 2020, it will move the Toronto and Peel Public Health Units into the “Lockdown” or “Grey Zone” and 12 other regions into new zones under the new Government of Ontario Framework, which is designed to keep Ontario operating safely and to better manage the increasing impact of the global pandemic.

Ontario Soccer has reviewed the latest changes with the Government Health and Sport authorities and made the following updates to the Return to Play Guide:

Placement of the “Lockdown” or “Grey Zone” under Phase 1 of Return to Play. There are greater restrictions in place for this Zone. No Indoor Soccer facility training is allowed for regions in “Lockdown” or “Grey Zone” but individualized training is still permitted at Outdoor facilities.

Inclusion of all restrictions listed under “Grey Zone” in the Return to Play Phases and Zones.

Amended items under the “Red Zone” included a decision making tree for organizations to understand the steps to follow in managing the COVID-19 pandemic in your soccer organization.

Ontario Soccer will continue to update membership, including any required changes to our Return to Play Guide, when additional changes are mandated by the Government of Ontario. Organizations are reminded to review the updated Return to Play Guide and Plan with the details of the new protocols, for each Zone, which are designated by four colours as well as the ‘Lockdown’ zone.

Ontario Soccer has updated the Reference Guide (Zones) Overview to assist the membership in understanding these changes. QUEBEC SOCCER NEWS SOCCER QUEBEC SETS UP AN ACADEMY FOR EDUCATORS

These will be accompanied by a mentor who will be provided in collaboration with the participant's ARS or by Soccer Quebec.

GORD DUNPHY NAMED NLSA HONORARY LIFE MEMBER

On November 04 the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association (NLSA) inducted Gord Dunphy (pictured with NLSA President Doug Redmond) as the 12th Honorary Life Member in recognition of his life-long support of the sport of soccer.

Gord Dunphy's illustrious soccer career extends to over 50 years. His playing days started with the St. Lawrence Laurentians. After his playing days he served as President of the St. Lawrence Laurentians and coached the Laurentians to three Provincial Challenge Cup Championships - 1992, 1998 & 1999 while also winning the National Bronze in 1999 in Chilliwack B.C. In 1999, he was named NLSA Coach of the Year.

Gord is currently a member of the St. Lawrence Soccer Hall of Fame (2001), Burin Peninsula Soccer Hall of Fame (2008) and Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Hall of Fame (2019). Gord served four terms with the NLSA for a period of eight years as NLSA Senior Men’s VP and Challenge Cup Commissioner. For his work during this period, Gord was named NLSA Executive of the Year in 2014.

During his years of soccer involvement Gord was a regular contributor to The Southern Gazette newspaper for 15 years through his column “Coach’s Corner.” He also did further soccer coverage on the web through Gord Dunphy’s Soccer Blog and did colour commentary for CHCM radio doing soccer broadcasts along with Russ Murphy, which included radio coverage for Provincial and National Senior Men's and Women's Championships.

After Gord's NLSA executive years, he then set up the “Gord Cast” livestream which grew the game to new heights. It expanded the viewing audience of NLSA games throughout Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada. The livestream is now viewed by people in the United Kingdom, U.S.A., Argentina and even in the Middle East.

“As a champion and cheerleader for the game across all teams and all age groups, it is fitting that as the NLSA’s “twelfth man,” Gord becomes the actual twelfth person to receive this recognition,” said NLSA President Doug Redmond. “Gord's life has revolved around soccer and his love and passion for the game, as well as his wealth of knowledge and experience is evident every time you hear "Welcome to Gord Cast”.”

Unfortunately Gord has been hospitalized recently and underwent surgery in the last few weeks. Fortunately he is back home recovering being looked after by his family. We hope he is back up and around and enjoying his Timmy’s in St John’s soon and is back on the soccer sidelines with Gord Cast next summer.

Vancouver Island has a rich heritage when it comes to soccer – the VISL was founded over 120 years ago. It also has long history of attracting migrants from all over the world, the impact of which can be felt all over the provincial capital, Victoria. Cook Street United is a new VISL team based in the city, established in the summer of 2020 designed to bring the best of European football and combine it with the things that make Canada uniquely great. After six months of discussing the concept of forming a new club over the occasional beer, a small group of VISL players decided to leave their current clubs Gorge FC, Bays United and Fernwood Town and try to create something new. This small cohort of early players had an international feel from the start, with four Englishmen, an Irishman and two Canadians forming the basis of the first practice session. The group mostly knew each other through a casual 7-a-side team notorious for wearing pink socks: a flourish that inspired the design of Cook Street’s away uniform. The idea would be to embrace the local values, like sportsmanship, professionalism and kindness but also to add aspects of the English game that are sometimes missing from island football. That meant finding a balance between a fierce competitive attitude and ensuring that it would always be fun to participate. Crucially, the club was focused on finding players that would not only win every game but also genuinely enjoy drinking a few beers together afterwards, with the core belief that what happens off the field influences what happens onit. In July 2020 club president Kieren Parfey and vice president George Lucas started formalizing the process of creating the new club, while head coach Joel Windels began populating the player roster. Cook Street United is named after the vibrant, alternative Cook Street Village area of Victoria, nestled right next to Heywood Park in the beautiful Beacon Hill grounds. Beacon Hill is famous for its large population of roaming peacocks, which has since naturally become the club’s nickname. Cook Street United had a community feel from the very start, with players like the experienced Kale Haley, prolific Jonathan Hand and hard-working Dan Collins contributing to a recruitment drive to find the right kind of player. Izak Brussow, the club’s South African winger put it simply: “my teammates are the sort of people you want to pass to and train with, but they’re also the kind that you want to hang out with outside of football”. Informal playing sessions each Thursday slowly attracted more players as word-of-mouth spread about an exciting new club, with the pub just as full afterwards as the field was during it. Players from Vic West, FC Sagres and Prospect Lake all decided to make the switch as the hype continued to build. With four weeks to go before the first match, the final list of players was selected and the Peacocks registered the uncommonly large number of 27 players for the season, which would begin in VISL division 4. The club made special efforts to be welcoming to newcomers to Canada, with players hailing from over a dozen different countries including the UK, Australia, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Serbia. Many were happy to be part of something special even if it meant less playing time than they might get at other clubs. Local favourites Driftwood Brewery also joined as the club’s flagship sponsor, forming a partnership well suited to the club’s cultural values. After securing a training venue, home and away kits, a home field, equipment, a website and a thousand other tasks to ensure football could be played safely amidst a global pandemic, Cook Street United were ready to start their inaugural season. A comfortable 4-0 win at Pace FC was the perfect way to start life as a new club, and a third of the way into the schedule the Peacocks sit unbeaten and top of division 4 with sights on an ‘invincible’ 20/21 season. Cook Street leadership hopes it can create something a little different to the large, established clubs on the island, and so far it looks like they’re on the right path. The 1998 season in the Premier Development Soccer League was a watershed year for the relatively new league. It kicked off it’s 4th season with, for the first time, the addition of 3 Canadian teams. The teams, Abbotsford Athletes In Action, Okanagan Valley Challenge and Victoria Umbro Select along with Seattle Hibernian all joined the league as associate members. The four sides joined from the Pacific Coast Soccer League and only played 8 games once the PCSL season was over while the rest of the league played 16.

The Premier Development Soccer League kicked off its first campaign in 1995 with 27 teams from the USA. The league was formed when the Interregional Soccer League was reorganized at the end of 1994 and was originally named the USISL Premier League. Richmond Kickers were the inaugural champions beating Cocoa Expos in the final. The next year 12 teams were added with 5 leaving the League. New team Central Coast Roadrunners became Champions in 1996 defeating San Francisco Bay Seals.

There was a name change in 1997 to the Premier Development Soccer League and 6 new teams joined with 8 leaving and Central Coast Roadrunners won again defeating the unlucky Cocoa Expos who lost 2 of the first 3 finals.

In 1998 the Canadians came on the West Coast as 3 of 13 new teams while 9 left. They were placed in the Northwest Division along with Seattle Hibernian, Seattle BigFoot, and Yakima Reds from Washington and from . Unfortunately the 3 representatives did not get thing their own way and finished bottom 3 with Hibernian finishingas the best of the Associate Members with Abbotsford being deducted 1 of their 2 points earned.

The venues and dates are unknown to me at the time of writing. Northwest Division Semi Final ????? - Spokane Shadow 1-2 Okanagan Valley Challenge Northwest Division Final ????? - Yakima Reds 4-1 Okanagan Valley Challenge

San Gabriel Valley Highlanders won the Championship defeating Jackson Chargers 3-2 in the Final

Following on from the Canadian expansion Okanagan and Victoria moved back to the Pacific Coast Soccer League in 1999 with only Abbotsford staying on in the newly named USL Premier Development League which is now the USL League 2.

If you know dates and venues of the Okanagan semi final and final then drop me a line at [email protected]. Lower leagues Results service
