Commodore’s Comments:

I would like to thank you, the members, who have given so much this past year by volunteering to serve on and support our social and activities. “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” (Winston Churchill)

The volunteer spirit of the LBYC has been exemplified by three of our members who have completed their term of service on the Board of Directors in 2009. I would like to thank Frank Rappold, Past Commodore; Julie Haeger, Secretary; and Joe Bitter, House and Grounds, for the many hours they spent in service to the club. They have contributed their special skills and much of their valuable time to the positions they held and the club is a better place for their efforts. Going forward, we are fortunate to have Julie Haeger continuing on as she will be moving into the position of Rear Commodore.

Our 2010 board has a wealth of experience and talent. Here is the lineup: Paul Riedl, Past Commodore; Jay Hiller, Sailing Commodore; Julie Haeger, Rear Commodore; Don Franzene, House and Grounds Chairperson; Candace Porter, Social Chairperson; Hardy Will, Yachtsman at Large; Nancy Roble, Secretary; Jeff Lippert, Treasurer; and Steve Rotier, Commodore. Over the winter months this team will be getting everything in place for a great upcoming year as well as handling all of the administrative business of the club.

Finally, I would like to encourage all members to communicate and give the board feedback regarding what is working well and going in the right direction and where we can make improvements. Please pass on your com- ments to any of the board members.

Sandy and I would like to wish all of you Happy Holidays and if you are at the lake, hopefully we will see you at the Christmas Party on December 12, 2009.

Thanks for your support, Steve Rotier

As you read this, our sailing season on Lake Beulah is about six months away but we are al- ready working on making it a successful, fun season. SCHEDULE : In our initial look, the schedule looks very similar to last year, no big changes. Racing will start on Memorial Day weekend, May 22, 23, and 24. I anticipate fleet meetings to be held this weekend also. REGATTAS We will be hosting the following regattas in 2010; MC Dorn in June, OPTI Beulah Din- ghy in June, X Quad Lakes in July, C ILYA Invite in July, C Beulah Challenge in September. This is the first time I can remember that we will have hosted an ILYA C event. We have two great volunteers to co-chair the event in Candace Porter and Frank Davenport. They have some great ideas that will make this a huge success. Thanks Frank and Candace! Julie Haeger and I are also working on the PRO and Signal boat schedule. With over 100 races on our schedule the old adage, "Many hands make light work" certainly applies. If you haven't been involved and would like to join in the fun please contact either one of us. Best wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving! Jay Hiller Sailing Commodore

Congratulations on a summer of great competition and fun. MC’ers Recapture the Cup By Hardy Will

A team of seven LBYC MC sailors traveled to Lauderdale Lakes in early September with the goal of winning back the Galvanized Cup . It was lost last year at Beulah in a close contest.

The team was greeted with beautiful fall weather for what was to be a series of four handicapped races on Saturday and Sunday. The wind did not cooper- ate!

The Saturday morning race saw winds of 2-5 mph and after an hour delay, we Our Beulah MC boys were tough competitors at Lauderdale. took off. Bill Hudson took advantage of his handicap and led around every . But it was not to be. Milt Hae- ger and Hardy Will caught him on the Haeger Repeats as Collegiate National Champ final leg with Milt leading a Beulah 1- 2-3 finish. After this two-hour race, the exhausted sailors broke for lunch. Hot off the presses. Annie Haeger won from the start. Sunday dawned beautiful, but with ab- solutely no wind. Rather than sit around, our hosts from Lauderdale took us on an extensive pontoon boat tour of Lauderdale Lakes. A very interesting and enjoyable end to a glorious week- end. We brought the CUP home!!

THE C FINAL REPORT by Joe Skortarzak with Kris Skotarzak

It was quite the busy fall on the C-scow regatta circuit! Things started off close to home with Frank D heading down to Burlington and Brown’s lake for their one-day “Fish and Weeds” re- gatta. Frank tied for first but won the tiebreaker to bring home the coveted (at least by him) F&W title!

Next up was the Blue Chip . This was the 50 th annual, so all past champions were invited back and a whole slew of them came so the event was a larger-than-usual 43 boats! Beulah was out in force with the 12, 6, 217, 18 and 303 teams heading south. In addition, as a past Champion, none other than our very own Matt Haeger was also in attendance, reminiscing about the old days of drinking Tequila shots at the Bald Knob during C-scow regattas past… The call of the weekend was made early by Marty. He set us up to launch down the road from the yacht club so that we were able to pretty well, completely avoid the traffic hassles! By far the highlight of the weekend was the sighting of Lippert and Franzene at Pistakee!! Yes, faithful readers, you read that right, Team Sumo themselves, on site during a C-scow regatta!! Now that they’re all warmed up, we’re hoping that next year they’ll actually put their boat on the trailer and bring it along with them to a re- gatta, unlike this year when they just came to watch… As for the racing, not much B-boat excite- ment out on the water, except for the fact that Kent has qualified for the past roughly 26 Blue Chips in a row. He is closing in on the record of 31. The teams 12 and 6 finished 6 th and 7 th , re- spectively. From there it was a long way down to the next B-boat…

The following weekend was the Beulah Challenge . First, a hearty WELCOME BACK to Dave Por- ter and B-17, Flying High again as he has officially re-joined our fleet! Anne was out of town Sat- urday, and so we didn’t sail, but Dave Sko, Erika and Kris filled in nicely. More from Kris below:

“Sailing – yes, ! They did not take me on the first race, tho they should have….dead last. Second race was crazy windy! So Carla and I drove to Klements to try to flag down the boats. They didn’t see us in time and both boats headed straight for the Y club after race 1 to find us. Argh! Karen Hiller saw us waving from Klement’s pier and took us out. After helping Carla get to her boat, with life preservers (flagged!) – We missed the start! Restart needed! (Thank G!) So the boats swung around and picked up Karen and me. Whew! We stayed with the fleet for the whole race, but towards the back. I was not a lot of help, after a late night on Saturday, including many cocktails, and many years absence from sailing, but it sure was fun. Second race, we fin- ished second to last. (One boat did tip.) So Frank/Ron took first; Goober/Robert, second – BUT, Goober gave it up and wanted to be given 6 th due to a foul (hit someone’s boat). So, Brickler’s moved to #2; Franzene/Lippert, #3; Long Lake sailor, 4 th ; and Danny Klement took 5 th . Much fun was had by all.”

The next weekend we moved on to Delevan for the C-Scow World Championship ! A total of 18 boats showed up, down a bit from years past. We got in some more great racing, five races over the course of the two days! In the end, Frank and Ron continued their torrid autumn sailing, and finished 2 nd overall!! We were 6 th and Bricklers 9th in the 18-boat fleet. In the end and looking at the season as a whole, the B-boats won the overall team C-scow racing title in commanding fash- ion over the pretenders from Cedar and Pewaukee. In the individual Road Warrior standings, even without any help from the 99, Beulah managed to fully take five of the top 10 overall posi- tions, with a 3-4-7-8-9! Another pretty fine season for the little lake that could! Another five or so months and we’ll be off to Springfield and Cedar, IN to get things ramped up for the 2010 campaign!

From the Past Commodore October 27, 2009

Dear Fellow LBYC Members,

Since I was the person who started the Bylaws review process, I asked Commodore Steve Rotier to per- mit me to communicate with you one last time on this matter, in order to advise you of the final disposi- tion of the proposed Bylaws revisions.

Before I start with that, let me express the Club’s and my appreciation to Bill Hudson and his commit- tee of Tom Atkinson, Brian Brickler, Maryellen Heckman, Jay Hiller, Jim Phillips and Carol Stein for their hard work on the formidable project of developing the proposed revised Bylaws that were pre- sented to the membership at the 2009 Annual Meeting. At my request in the fall of 2008 these folks ac- cepted the task of attempting to define improvements to the LBYC Bylaws that would be acceptable to at least 2/3 of the members who would vote on those improvements. The process for amending/revising Bylaws is difficult by design to insure stability in the rules that govern an organization, and any com- mittee that takes on the revising task is facing an uphill battle. Our committee took on that hill and pro- duced commendable proposed Bylaw revisions for our consideration.

As most of you know, the proposed revised Bylaws were not approved at the Annual Meeting by a nar- row margin. Some of the members who had to leave the meeting prior to voting, dropped off absentee ballots, which could not be counted. After reviewing that situation away from the hullabaloo of the meeting, I have now concluded that it is extremely unlikely that those votes would have affected the final outcome. To dispatch this matter, the members at the Annual Meeting referred the proposed re- vised Bylaws to the Board for determining how best to proceed with them.

This request from the members was taken up at a Special Meeting of the Board that was dedicated to coming up with a strategy for dealing with the proposed revised Bylaws in a manner that would be best for the Club. After much discussion, the Board decided that the current Bylaws would not permit the use of a written vote of all voting members of the Club by mail for amending/revising the Bylaws. After further discussion, the Board decided that it would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to schedule a Special Meeting of the membership that would work for most interested members; and to hold this matter open until the next Annual Meeting would have it drag on too long. Therefore, in order to keep the revisions to the Bylaws from becoming increasingly divisive and to move on to the business of per- forming the many tasks needed in order to be prepared for a successful 2010 Club season, it would be in the best interest of the Club to place the revisions on an indefinite hold and let the Club continue to function with the existing Bylaws.

I support the Board's decision concerning the Bylaws and I ask all the members to do likewise.

Looking back on the process to see what could have been done better I come up with the following ob- servations: 1. Schedule the Bylaws revision discussion and vote earlier in the Annual Meeting to get that matter completed before members have to leave the meeting for their other commitments.

2. Allow enough time for significant proposed Bylaws changes to be considered and commented on by the members. Though at first seeming to be uncontroversial, the stating of what has been past prac- tice that Sidestays members must also be members of LBYC proved to bring out strong feelings among

Continued on the next page Continued from the previous page some members. Although this issue was discussed by Sidestays members throughout much of the sum- mer, it was not officially publicized as a proposed Bylaws change until the 8-7-09 draft. This might have been published too late to be adequately vented with the membership prior to being included in the final draft.

3. Promote more effectively the need for members to communicate their disagreements on proposed Bylaws changes with the Bylaws Committee and to do so in a timely manner. If more members had ex- pressed their disagreement regarding the increase of the age limit from 25 to 30 for children being cov- ered under parents Family Membership that was proposed early on, that change would have been identi- fied as a significant sore point prior to the Annual Meeting and could have been eliminated. When such communication is working correctly, members express their disagreements to the Committee before bringing them up at the Annual Meeting.

4. Use absentee ballots as a last resort. Such ballots are a poor substitute for voting at a meeting be- cause absentee voters miss the opportunity of having their vote be influenced by the discussion of other members at the meeting and because such votes can only be applied to the wording that was originally sent out.

Although it is disappointing that none of the Review Committees' fine work is being used in the near future, it is good that the members were given a fine product for their consideration. It is also neat that the Club has many members who have strong feelings about that which is good for the Club. This Club is in no danger of wallowing aimlessly due to the apathy of its membership. Now is the time for all of us to put our differences about the Bylaws behind us and to move forward with our existing governance rules that have served us well in the past.

Have great cold water/hard water seasons wherever you spend them and I look forward to seeing all of you when the warmer waters return to Lake Beulah in the spring.

While we’d like to congratulate the winners of the Men’s A and B Singles Tournament, we just can’t do it. The championship matches were never completed. A victory next year will be doubly sweet! Spe- cial thanks to Frank Rappold for court maintenance and to Carrie and Anne Franzene for rolling the courts this year. From the Social Chair: Last season the early publication of the first draft of the social schedule allowed you to pre-plan, to submit needed changes in dates and, in general, resulted in very few last minute cancellations. Please review the enclosed list and give your changes to Social Chair Candace Porter. New this year: Monthly Potlucks on Sunday afternoons and one huge Potluck at year’s end For those of you asking for more Saturday night parties, rest assured, there are no vacancies on the calen- dar. There is something for everyone: fleet parties, regatta parties, a wild Amazing Race, formal Com- modore’s Ball, a new look to the Trophy Dinner and the always-successful Auction. We are full of regattas this year. The George Dorn again falls during Father’s Day weekend. The Quad Lakes X and C Invitational are in July. The C boaters will open the season with their fleet meeting the first week of June. The MC fleet date is still to be finalized due to a scheduling change anticipated from the ILYA. The Bilge Pullers open our season in May. A quick start to the bar revenue. The “Open date” parties are yet to be defined. Save the dates and give suggestions for a theme. Shirley Gawne has always been a historian at heart. She saves things from the past and of course remem- bers a great deal of history about Lake Beulah and Lake Beulah Yacht Club. Shirley and Dan lived on Lake Beulah for many, many summers so she actually saw a lot of changes. She would like others to know about the past also. To that end she started having name plates made for the burgees hanging in the bar room. This shows the many places LBYC members have been. (If you bring back a burgee or know where some of these came from, there are still name plates available!) Shirley decided to leave a parting gift for LBYC mem- bers when she left last summer. She found pictures of "LBYC Past and Present", and had them enlarged and framed for all of us to see. Be sure to look on the wall between the trophy cases the next time you come to the Club Thanks Shirley!
