Its I humor comes from the particularities of Filipino rearticulation of Shakespeare’s famous question (the joke also resonates among Carolin- ian speakers from Micronesia, and perhaps among many other Austronesian-based Pacific Island language speakers), but I also want to suggest that its stronger force likewise comes from a kind of lightness of being that self-mockery can make of ontological fundamentalism. Self-mockery is a serious weapon of cultural resilience and resis- tance—and as someone waiting in line, somewhat impatiently, I want to re-aim the line of “P’s” trajectory in the direction of another culturally and historically specific mode of becoming. The converted question, “To P or not to P?” becomes, then, my way of marking the present territory, a slippery, even sticky sea of historical, political, and cultural determina- tions that exists between Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in a more turbulent ocean of United States imperialism and colonialism. Choppy too, of course, is the no less innocent world of institutionalized study of these struggles, no matter how noble the motives may be. In this essay, I want to address the tensions raised by the “P Ques- tion” in relation to Asian American Studies from the vantage point of one who has been located in Pacific Studies as viewed from the Islands, par- ticularly from Guam in Micronesia, where I was born and raised, and where I taught in the 1990s. -

This is good luck, they say, and we are lost in phenomena and ways of knowing the ocean that connects us. Ratu had told me that after our conversation that the ‘Va’ space between us had diminished. As I consider what he means, I walk through the Suva streets to the bus depot. It’s so hot: I’m sticky and uncomfortable. The bus arrives and I clamber on, across the debris of paper bus tickets in the gutter; my too many bags getting in the way, thoughts shut out from the loud beats of the bus. A young girl stares. I smile, too keen. She waits. I turn and look out the window at the harbour clogged with wrecks and foreign ships. I look at the girl again and wait until the space between us opens. Many people living in the Pacific Islands are experiencing this threat through the extreme negative impacts of climate change without largely having produced the human-induced causes. -

Hancock Thesis Committee: Joseph Stanton (Chairperson) Brandy Nalani McDougall Robert Perkinson Keywords: Pastoral, Paradise, Pacific Islands, Hawai‘i, Herman Melville, Charles Warren Stoddard, Mark Twain, Theocritus, Longus ABSTRACT: This aim of this thesis is to deconstruct the etymology of the word “paradise” within the context of early Pacific narratives by popular American authors, and then within today’s tourist propaganda. Fundamental to that process is the imagination of “Pacific Pastoralism,” in which the pastoral tradition is considered as a predecessor to American traditions of describing the landscapes and peoples of the Pacific region, as those descriptions fueled an economy forcibly mapped onto that space. Herein texts are analyzed via close-reading comparisons, historical research, and more lyrical methods such as rhetorical stargazing, echolocation, and narrative technique. While this thesis is indebted to scholars in the fields of American Studies and English literature, it attempts to open space for Pacific Island Studies to epistemologically counter its cultural materialist claims. In total, this thesis is a critique of tourist marketing, which was ferried from antiquity to the Pacific on wooden ships, and today renders beaches little more than golf course sand-traps.
