Course Syllabus: MENG 6510: Eminent Writers, Ralph Waldo Emerson Instructor: Dr. John Schwiebert Office: EH #457 Phone: 626-6289 e-mail: [email protected] Office hours: XXX, or by appointment Course Overview Ralph Waldo Emerson was the central figure in the American Literary Renaissance of the middle nineteenth century. Numerous writers, American and worldwide, then and since, have felt his influence, and many of his ideas have become mainstays of the American vocabulary. For instance, Emerson popularized the term “self-reliance,” and much of what is best and most enduring in American intellectual history has affinities with ideas in his essays, poems, journals, and other writings. Emerson’s main interest, throughout his life, was in processes: natural and physical processes, creative processes, and spiritual; how to read, how to write, how to think and grow, and above all, how to live. In Emerson’s view nothing is static, least of all his own writings. A course in Emerson cannot properly be limited to Emerson as a “subject,” because for Emerson the “subject” was always living people, e.g, you and me, who are tasked with the challenge of creating their own lives out of a living past. Accordingly, we will treat Emerson’s works less as ends in themselves than as means to our own intellectual growth and creativity. Introduction R. J. Ellis One of the most influential books ever written, Uncle Tom’s Cabin; or, Life Among the Lowly was also one of the most popular in the nineteenth century. Stowe wrote her novel in order to advance the anti-slavery cause in the ante-bellum USA, and rooted her attempt to do this in a ‘moral suasionist’ approach — one designed to persuade her US American compatriots by appealing to their God-given sense of morality. This led to some criticism from immediate abolitionists — who wished to see slavery abolished immediately rather than rely upon [per]suasion. Uncle Tom's Cabin was first published in 1852 as a serial in the abolitionist newspaper National Era . It was then printed in two volumes in Boston by John P. Jewett and Company later in 1852 (with illustrations by Hammatt Billings). The first printing of five thousand copies was exhausted in a few days. Jewett and Co., 1852 During 1852 several reissues were printed from the plates of the first edition; each reprinting also appearing in two volumes, with the addition of the words ‘Tenth’ to ‘One Hundred and Twentieth Thousand’ on the title page, to distinguish between each successive re-issue. Later reprintings of the two-volume original carried even higher numbers. These reprints appeared in various bindings — some editions being quite lavishly bound. One-volume versions also appeared that same year — most of these being pirated editions. From the start the book attracted enormous attention. -

Poetry meant many different things at the time—it was at once art form, popular entertainment, instructional medium, and forum for sociopolitical commentary. The poems that appeared in periodicals of the era are therefore integral to our understanding of how the populace felt about any issue of consequence. Writers seized on this uniquely persuasive genre to win readers over to their cause, and perhaps most memorable among them are the abolitionists. Antislavery activists turned to poetry so as to connect both emotionally and rationally with a wide audience on a regular basis. By speaking out on behalf of those who could not speak for themselves, their poems were one of the most effective means of bearing witness to, and thus also protesting, a reprehensible institution. These pleas for justice proved ef- fective by insisting on the right of freedom of speech at a time when it ap- peared to be in jeopardy. -

About the Author and Editors Harriet Beecher Stowe is best known for her first book, Uncle Tom's Cabin ( 1852). Begun as a serial for the Washington anti-slavery weekly, the National Era , it focused public interest on the issue of slavery, and was deeply controversial. In writing the book, Stowe drew on personal experience. She was familiar with slavery, the antislavery movement, and the Underground Railroad. Kentucky, across the Ohio River from Cincinnati, Ohio, where Stowe had lived, was a slave state. -

No need to take out your map and look at it: it won’t appear on a traditional USGS map and a search on Google Maps will yield no result. Beck Stow’s swamp is somewhere out there, but it is located on a different plane of existence. The swamp does appear on some maps, but they belong to a very specific category: those reproduced at the end of certain editions of Thoreau’s works. The name of the swamp will indeed be familiar to his readers, as he evokes it several times in his writing, especially his Journal1. -

Milteer May 2, 2017 Blacksburg, Virginia Keywords: abolition, slavery, miscegenation, whiteness “Perfectly White”: Light-Skinned Slave and the Abolition Movement 1835-1865 David Lee Atkins Jr. ABSTRACT This project looks at American abolitionists use of light-skinned slaves to prove to Northerners slavery was an abomination. This project is also a study of the social constructions of race and the meanings of skin color in Northern and Southern American societies. This research draws mostly upon primary sources including anti-slavery newspapers, images, slave narratives, and slave testimonies. The stories of light-skinned slaves in this thesis challenged the neat assumptions of what it meant to be white or black and deeply disturbed white Americans. The descriptions and images of these former slaves blurred the lines between black and white and made Northerners, and in some instances Southerners, rethink how they decided a person’s racial classification. Canonicity and the American Public Library: the Case of American Women Writers

Canonicity and the American Public Library: The Case of American Women Writers Sarah Wadsworth Abstract Beginning with an overview of the debate over American women writers and the academic canon, this essay inventories four clusters of American women writers—domestic novelists, regionalists, mod- ernists, and writers of diverse ethnicities—within a representative sampling of small-town public libraries across the Midwest from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. The survey reveals some surprising disjunctures that run counter to trends in the academy. It also highlights the role publishers and bibliographers have played in establishing favored texts for a general readership and demon- strates that publishers of literary classics and bibliographies geared toward librarians have not always promoted the same texts as their academic counterparts. On the whole, it concludes, women writ- ers fared quite well in the hands of publishers and public libraries promoting “the classics” at the same time that they suffered at the hands of major textbook publishers and scholarly editors intent on defining “the canon.” At the 1981 Modern Language Association annual convention, a “New American Literary History” forum sponsored a special session on the topic “A New American Literature Anthology.” Led by Judith Fetterley and Joan Schulz of the MLA’s Commission on the Status of Women, the session sparked a lively dialogue on the neglect of women writers in Amer- ican literature. The commission had recently undertaken a study of the representation of works by women in standard classroom anthologies, and the results were discouraging.
