Weʼll be able to run our offense through both of them.” Adding depth to the bench as rookies last season, Andrews and Strode will be counted on to contribute often this season. Appearing in 13 games as a freshman, Andrews provided an offensive spark for the Hawks. Averaging 1.5 points per contest, the speedy wing player gives Saint Josephʼs a streaky scorer who can hit from the perimeter and drive to the basket. Returning to the lineup after suffering a season-ending knee injury early last year, Strodeʼs strong defense and agility will be looked to often in the coming season. Playing in just one game, she made an impact both in the paint and the wing, tallying three points, while crashing the boards for three rebounds in just 10 minutes of action. “Our sophomore class is going to be very important for us this year as far as depth,” Griffin said. “Either of them could start and they are ready. Their roles are going to increase and the work they put in this summer and experi- ence from last year has prepared them for that.” Junior guard Natasha Cloud

FRONTCOURT

A major reason for Saint Josephʼs success last season, the forward duo of Robinson and Gotfrida gave the Hawks a physical presence in the paint, while providing an offen- sive punch when they needed to the most. Missing the first seven games of the season due to injury, Robinson quickly rounded into form, earning key starts in the final months. Averaging a career-high 19.3 min- utes per game, the 6-foot-2 forward provided Saint Josephʼs with key rebounding and a shot-blocking presence. Grabbing 4.1 rebounds per game and finishing fourth in blocked shots (16), Robinsonʼs role will be looked to increase as the Hawks try to replace the double-double averaged by graduate Chatilla van Grinsven. “Ashley really came on in the second half of the season last year with rebounding,” Griffin said. “Rebounding is going to be very important with the loss of Chatilla, and Ashleyʼs role in that is important.” Having her best season to date as junior, Gotfrida set career-highs in scoring (7.6 ppg), rebounding (4.3 rpg) and minutes (23.9 per game). Playing all 32 games with 22 starts, Gotfrida helped stretch the Hawksʼ offense by extending opposing defenses. Hitting five three-pointers and shooting a team-best 52.1 percent from the floor, Griffin will look for Gotfrida to have a major impact this year. Redshirt junior forward Ashley Robinson

“Ilze got some valuable minutes last year and gives us a presence in the paint and can put some points in the bas- ket from down low,” said Griffin. “She is one of pur best scor- ers coming back and is a great compliment to a low post player who can play with their back to the basket. She has worked hard to earn the minutes and we expect to really increase her role both in minutes and production.” A versatile wing player, Berger was a consistent player for the Hawks in 2012-13. Playing in 31 games with three starts, the 5-foot-11 forward averaged 3.5 points per game, while shooting 42.3 percent from the floor. A strong defen- sive presence, Berger also helped Saint Josephʼs extend defenses, knocking down 14 three-pointers, while convert- ing 35.9 percent from behind the arc. “Kelsey is a scorer on the perimeter and can post up smaller guards or guard a bigger post player if we need her to,” said Griffin. “She is very good rebounder and we are going to need her help us in those areas.” A strong presence on defense and a versatile scorer on offense, Fairbanks saw her role increase as the season went on last year. A talented low post player, she led all rookies in rebounding (2.2 rpg) and finished tied for third in blocked shots (17) over 27 contests. Averaging 1.8 points per game, Fairbanks had a strong finish to the season, including six points in the NCAA Tournament versus Senior forward Ilze Gotfrida Vanderbilt, going 2-of-2 from the field and 2-of-2 from the foul line. 2013-14 Saint Joseph’s University Women’s Basketball 15 Heart Of A Hawk

In addition to athletics and academics, community service has long been one of the traditions of the Saint Joseph's University women's 1 basketball program. The Heart of a Hawk program is SJUʼs way of giving back to its community. Each student-athlete is required to complete a minimum of 10 hours of community service each semes- ter. The team will also participate in a number of group service proj- ects throughout the year. All community service activities are record- ed in the Heart of a Hawk log and the Roosevelt Hunter Community Service award is presented at the end of the year to the student-ath- lete with the most community service hours.

Among the projects, programs, and organizations the Hawk women's basketball team has donated time to are: the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, the Childrenʼs Hospital of Philadelphia (1), the Boys and Girls Clubs of Philadelphia, the Hand- in-Hand Festival, Leukemia Walk, Toys for Tots, the Boys and Girls Club (2) and Philly Girls Got Game clinics (3). In addition, the team has sponsored and participated in a wide range of clinics throughout the Delaware Valley, including at the Please Touch Museum. Last season, the Hawks helped raise money for two cancer awareness organizations. SJU teamed with the campus group Hawks vs. Cancer to collect $1,182 for the Foundation for Womenʼs Cancer (4). In February, the Hawks took part in the Womenʼs Basketball Coaches Associationʼs national “Think Pink” campaign to spread awareness of breast cancer. Both Saint Josephʼs and visiting Charlotte took part, raising more than $500 (5). The Hawk Will Die! Never

18 2013-14 Saint Joseph’s University Women’s Basketball Cindy Griffin Basketball Camp

Girls and boys ages 9-17 can have the opportunity to learn from the Hawks by attending one of the exciting sessions of the Cindy Griffin Basketball Camp. The camps are conducted at the Michael J. Hagan ʻ85 Arena on the campus of Saint Joseph's University. SJU head coach Cindy Griffin and her staff provide campers with the opportunity for hands-on learning. Additionally, campers receive individual instruction from Hawk players.

The camp offers five different sessions to choose from, including three Day Camps, an Overnight Camp for girls only and a Junior Hawk Camp for girls and boys ages 5-8. Each session offers a great opportunity for young children to have a positive, fun learning experience. Each day will pose a new challenge that will help the kids become better basketball players.

In addition to the camps, the Saint Joseph's University women's basketball coaching staff hosts and participates in a variety of clin- ics throughout the year, including the Philadelphia Big 5 Womenʼs Basketball Coaches Clinic.
