S. Martin Main, Jensen, Everist, and Terra Galleries November 7, 2015 – January 31, 2016 This exhibition honors the legacy of T. S. Martin, the visionary founder of Sioux City’s trendsetting department store, T. S. Martin Company. His granddaughter, Margaret Ann Martin Seamster Everist, later became a vital force behind the construction of the Sioux City Art Center building. Over the years, she, her husband Hubert, and her children donated more than 50 artworks to the Art Center’s permanent collection. This exhibition consists of two parts. In the Main Gallery, visitors will find a selection of artworks that have been donated by the Everists and places them within imaginary store windows—the form of display that T. S. Martin’s store used so beautifully and effectively to highlight its offerings. The Art Center has worked with local retail and design firms to showcase these artworks in unique, creative settings. In the Jensen, Everist, and Terra Galleries, the Art Center presents a wider selection of the artworks donated by the family of T. S. Martin. This special project will have an additional component to expand visitors’ appreciation of the impact of the T. S. Martin store on Sioux City. The Art Center has worked with scholars from across Iowa to create an important catalog that traces the impact of the T.S. Martin Company on the advancement of the visual culture of Sioux City. Titled The Legacy of T. S. Martin, the book contains essays by Sara B. Marcketti (Iowa State University), Thomas Morain (Graceland University), Richard F. Poole (Briar Cliff University), and Art Center curator Todd Behrens. T. S.
