Trained skirt with deep satin hem facing on train, bodice lined in linen, matching petticoat having three front furbelows, upper back panel of linen with waist tie. Red and white striped silk open gown and petticoat brocaded with floral sprays in yellow, blue, plum and green having short sleeve, square neck, front opening flanked by graduated padded furbelows with looped silk cord trim, neckline, faux waistcoat and sleeve similarly trimmed. Trained back falls from two double Watteau pleats flanked by inverted pleats at the waist, lining of striped silk with lacing muslin back adjustment. Petticoat pleated at waist with side ties, front panel having matching ruffle and hem band, back pieced with plaid taffeta. B-36, W-30, front L-50, back L-62. (Scattered small spots and holes, two stains to petticoat, some restoration) good. $1500 - 1800
709 SILK TAFFETA GOWN with TWO BODICES, 1860’s. French blue with wide grey stripe, day bodice with long collared sleeve, lace collar and cuff all trimmed in cream bobbin lace (all but one self button replaced with milk glass). Short sleeve evening bodice with open neck trimmed in pleated ribbon, white net and velvet ribbon, both bodices cut straight at waist. Voluminous trained skirt with large pleats, off center front closure, unlined, hem with deep stiffened backing below hooks & eyes to raise hemline by 3-4 inches. B-36, W-25, skirt front L-45, back L-59, hem circumference 4 3/4 yards. (Period repair on evening bodice, some stains, scattered small holes, some restoration) good. $600 - 800
710 SILK GOWN with OVERSIZED TRAIN, 1880’s. 2-piece ivory bengaline with stand collar, fitted 3/4 sleeve, self buttons and deep points, lined in cream cotton, skirt having front drape, back pleats and folds, long curved train backed with pleated lace ruffle and stiffened lining. Single breasted with high stand collar having button tab closure, single angled breast pocket and waist pocket both with flap, slightly curved waist seam, one piece silver buttons marked, Jennens & Co. London (1807-1924) back with two buttons and inside tail pockets, plaid lining with inside breast pockets and lower button flap pocket probably hunting or livery. For a nearly identical examples see "19th Century Fashion in Detail" page 34 and Victoria and Albert Museum collection number T770-1913. Ch-36, W-29, L-40.
