Basic Facts About Stainless Steel
What is stainless steel ? Stainless steel is the generic name for a number of different steels used primarily for their resistance to corrosion. The one key element they all share is a certain minimum percentage (by mass) of chromium: 10.5%. Although other elements, particularly nickel and molybdenum, are added to improve corrosion resistance, chromium is always the deciding factor. The vast majority of steel produced in the world is carbon and alloy steel, with the more expensive stainless steels representing a small, but valuable niche market. What causes corrosion? Only metals such as gold and platinum are found naturally in a pure form - normal metals only exist in nature combined with other elements. Corrosion is therefore a natural phenomena, as nature seeks to combine together elements which man has produced in a pure form for his own use. Iron occurs naturally as iron ore. Pure iron is therefore unstable and wants to "rust"; that is, to combine with oxygen in the presence of water. Trains blown up in the Arabian desert in the First World War are still almost intact because of the dry rainless conditions. Iron ships sunk at very great depths rust at a very slow rate because of the low oxygen content of the sea water . The same ships wrecked on the beach, covered at high tide and exposed at low tide, would rust very rapidly. Maiden dividend of 3 cents per share paid post quarter end following maiden annual profit announced during the quarter . Atlas achieved an average price per tonne for its product of ~ USD 152/t CFR (DMT) . Unaudited notional cash operating costs (FOB, excluding royalties) remain consistent with guidance of $42-45/t range for the 2012 financial year . $373 million cash on hand at 30 September 2011. $390 million cash on hand at 21 October 2011 after payment of $26.6 million in dividends post quarter end . Atlas’ successful off-market takeover offer of FerrAus Limited closed on 5 October 2011 with Atlas moving to compulsory acquisition on 6 October 2011 . DSO Resources at the end of the September 2011 quarter stand at 1.035Bt at 56.3%Fe . Atlas is on target to continue to ship at a rate of approximately 1.5Mt in the December 2011 quarter (6Mtpa) . Wodgina expansion commenced and initial payments of $23.1 million made to Global Advanced Metals, as part Wodgina infrastructure access agreement announced in May 2011 . $18.7 million strategic investment in Brazilian iron ore explorer and developer, Centaurus Metals (ASX Code: CTM) completed . Improved costs at Pardoo as production ramps up. Hercules prospect discovered at Wodgina. Maiden Inferred resource on the Wishbone deposit at the Warrawanda Project, south east Pilbara. $63.5 million fund raising completed in May 2010 to fast track ramp up of DSO production to benefit from strong market demand. $155.2 million of cash on hand at 30 June 2010. Subsequent to the end of the quarter: commissioning of the Wodgina crushing and screening facility was completed, with ore production expected to commence in mid- August. Bismutotantalite-stibiotantalite-stibiocolumbite assemblage from elbaite pegmatites at Molo near Momeik, northern Shan State, Myanmar Novák Milan, Sejkora Jiří, Škoda Radek and Budina Václav With 5 figures and 2 tables Abstract: Bismutotantalite-stibiotantalite-stibiocolumbite (BSS) aggregates occur exclusively in pockets of the elbaite subtype pegmatites cutting serpentinized peridotite at Khetchel village, Molo quarter near Momeik Township, northeast of Mogok, Shan State, Myanmar (Burma). The pegmatites exhibit simple zoning with common pockets lined with K-feldspar, “mushroom-like” pink to red elbaite, beryl (aquamarine, morganite), petalite, phenakite, quartz, saccharoidal albite, adularia, hambergite and cookeite(?). The BSS aggregates consist of prismatic crystals of bismutotantalite-stibiotantalite (Bi/(Bi+Sb) = 0.47-0.51; Ta/(Ta+Nb) = 0.64-0.67; a = 5.6017(3), b = 11.7802(3), c = 4.9497(3) Å and V = 326.63(2) Å3), up to about 5 mm in size, and their aggregates, up to 3 cm in diameter, forming ~ 95 vol.% of the overall BSS aggregate. Oval to irregular grains blebs of stibiotantalite (Bi/(Bi+Sb) = 0.04-0.08; Ta/(Ta+Nb) = 0.62-0.68), up to 100 μm in diameter, scarcely occur in bismutotantalite-stibiotantalite. Thin veinlets of stibiocolumbite (Bi/(Bi+Sb) = 0.01-0.05; Ta/(Ta+Nb) = 0.40-0.49) with brecciated textures, up to 30 μm thick, cut bismutotantalite-stibiotantalite and rarely also stibiotantalite blebs. Two distinct compositions were found in the stibiocolumbite veinlets, W-poor and rare W-rich (up to 19.34 wt.% WO3). Late stibiocolumbite overgrowths (Bi/(Bi+Sb) = 0.01-0.03; Ta/(Ta+Nb) = 0.17-0.33) on crystals of bismutotantalite-stibiotantalite reach up to 20 μm in size. -
