Having successfully continued a long-standing tradition of success with Seattle Pacific’s track and field teams, Karl Lerum is now in his sixth year as director of the school’s entire running program, including cross country, having taken on that role in the fall of 2013. Lerum is heading into his 14th year in charge of the SPU track program. In 2015, for the sixth time in school history, and all under his leadership, the Falcon women pulled an indoor-outdoor GNAC team title sweep. In 2018, they shared the indoor title with Central Washington, then won the outdoor crown handily. A few weeks after the season ended, Lerum was named the 2018 GNAC women’s outdoor Coach of the Year. The GNAC award was his eighth. He has swept the women’s indoor and outdoor honors five times: 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2015. He also has six West Region women’s indoor Coach of the Year awards and four outdoor awards, thereby giving him 25 conference and region honors altogether between the winter and spring seasons. Of Seattle Pacific’s 12 conference indoor team championships, Lerum has been the man in charge for 10 of those. During the 2018 outdoor season, 12 Falcon women posted a total of 15 NCAA provisional qualifying marks (13 individual times / distances plus both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays). Of those qualifiers, Scout Cai (heptathlon), Mary Charleson (1500), Kate Lilly (1500), and Renick Meyer (heptathlon, long jump) made it to nationals. Meyer made first team All-America in both of her events; Cai and Lilly earned places on the second team. Indoors in 2018, Lerum’s Falcons hit eight NCAA qualifying standards. Scout Cai made it to nationals in the heptathlon and pole vault, finishing an All-American fifth in the hep. The 4000 distance medley relay team of Lilly, Lani Taylor, Chynna Phan, and Charleson raced to fifth place, making them All-Americans. Lerum stepped up to the Falcons’ coaching helm in October 2005, taking over from Jack Hoyt. He worked as an assistant to Hoyt in 2000, and again in 2003. In between, he spent two years as an assistant coach at Trinity College, an NCAA Division III school in Hartford, Conn. While Lerum has coached numerous athletes with impressive accomplishments at SPU, he has quite an impressive athletic background of his own. As an athlete at Pacific Lutheran University in nearby Tacoma, Lerum made his mark in two sports. On the football field, he set – and still owns – the school career records for receptions and receiving yards. On the track, Lerum has the Lutes record in the 400 meters and is among the school’s top 10 in the decathlon, 110 hurdles, long jump, 100 meters, and javelin. He was an All-American in the decathlon, finishing third at the NAIA nationals in 1996 and second in ‘97 and ‘98. He didn’t stop there. After college, Lerum was on the San Francisco 49ers’ roster for the 1998 and 1999 preseason, and played with the Amsterdam Admirals in NFL Europe. In 2003 and again in 2004, he served as the head coach of the Oslo Vikings football program in Norway. Lerum is a graduate of Franklin Pierce High School in Parkland, south of Tacoma. He has a bachelor’s degree in history from PLU and a master’s in history from Trinity. He and son Lukas live in Seattle. Cross Country / Track Assistant Coach CHRIS REED

Chris Reed is beginning his eighth year as a collegiate coach and his sixth year as an assistant at Seattle Pacific, joining the staff in December 2013. The native of Klamath Falls in southern Oregon is a 2011 graduate of Western Oregon, majoring in economics. Reed became an assistant coach at Western Oregon in 2011 prior to joining the Falcons. He was named the West Region Women’s Indoor Assistant Coach of the Year in 2015 by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. He also is director of Falcon Running Camp. In addition, Reed serves on the Cross Country Executive Committee for the USTFCCCA, and is on that group’s Polls Committee. Reed was a two-time All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference selection on the cross country course, finishing seventh as a junior in 2009 and third as a senior in 2010. He also was a two-time NCAA qualifier, earning All-America in 2009. On the track, Reed raced to a pair of All-GNAC honors, taking third in the 5,000 meters as a freshman in 2008, then placing third in the 1,500 as a senior in 2011. Indoors, he won the 2011 GNAC mile title and anchored the Wolves’ All-American distance medley relay later that season. Reed finished his WOU career with five school records. He and wife Annie live in Seattle.

Track Asst. / Head Strength & Conditioning Coach AUDRA SMITH

Audra Smith, who started out as a sprinter, became a heptathlete, and now has competed in four marathons, is in her sixth year on the Falcons coaching staff, coming aboard in August 2013. In addition to her track & field assistant coaching role, she is also the head coach for strength & conditioning coach in the athletic department. The graduate of Idaho State University spent the previous four years before joining the Falcons as a coach at the University of Washington. During the 2018 indoor track season, Smith’s sprinters accounted for 47 of SPU’s 136 points at the GNAC Indoor Championships to help the Falcons earn a share of the team title. Outdoors in the spring of ‘18, that sprint group racked up three GNAC titles to help account for 62 of the 155 points SPU scored to take the team championship going away. Just a week prior to the conference meet, that same 4x100 group set a school record with a time of 46.33 at the Ken Shannon Invitational. In the winter of 2016, Smith was named the West Region Women’s Indoor Track Assistant Coach of the Year by the USTFCCCA. A native of Pima, Ariz., Smith has been in the Seattle area since 2008. She is married to Raul Sheen, who is a track and field assistant coach with the Falcons. 2018 FALCONS FORECAST The Seattle Pacific Falcons certainly don’t have the largest cross country teams in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference – eight women, nine men. But among those 17 runners, there’s a good chunk of quality that will be on the trails this fall. As is the case every year, the SPU women will be setting their sights on qualifying for the NCAA Division II nationals, a meet they’ve been to 16 times, most recently in 2015. Leading an experienced pack are junior Kate Lilly and sophomore Dania Holmberg. Last fall, while now-graduated Mary Charleson had to delay the start of her season because of an injury, Holmberg stepped to the front, leading the Falcons at Sundodger (23rd place) and the Charles Bowles Invitational (12th). She was the No. 2 finisher (behind Charleson) at the Western Washington Classic and the GNAC meet. Lilly was among the five scorers in four meets, including GNAC. But during the subsequent indoor and outdoor track seasons, she really began to deliver some breakout performances. She was part of the All-American fifth-place distance medley relay at indoor nationals, then placed 10th in the 1,500 meters at the outdoor nationals, earning second-team All-America. Katherine Walter, now a junior, quietly and steadily has become a bigger factor for the Falcons. She scored in every meet in 2017 and was the second SPU runner across the line at the NCAA West Regionals, placing 57th among 209 finishers. Sophomores Abbie Steinhauer and Elizabeth Thompson are the other two veterans who will be looking to make bigger contributions this season. Steinhauer did run in last fall’s GNAC meet, placing 45th overall. A pair of newcomers – freshmen Krystal Kaufman and Kaylee Mitchell – bring the kind of talent that could help them make an impact right away. Mitchell placed fourth in the Class 6A (large school) Oregon state meet last year as a senior. That was a jump of eight spots from her 12th-place junior year finish. Kaufman was 16th in Washington’s Class 4A (large school) state race – a whopping jump of 75 places after going 91st as a junior. Seattle Pacific’s men showed some considerable improvement in 2017, and strongly believe they can show even more in 2018, Leading the three returners from last year’s top 7 is sophomore Elius Graff, who ran No. 2 for the team and was 41st overall at the GNAC Championships. Fellow sophomores Royce Garcia and Shad Galloway also were top-5 scorers at GNAC. All three of them – this time led by Galloway – scored at the NCAA West Regionals. Another sophomore with the potential of playing a bigger role is Colin Boutin. He was eighth at GNAC and did not race at regionals. But in the spring, Boutin scored in the 10,000 meters at GNAC outdoor track. Topping the crop of five newbies is 2017 Hawaii state champion Colby Otero. Of the seven meets he ran last fall for Kalaheo High School, he won six, capped by a winning margin of 23 seconds at state Freshman Jared Putney ran in three straight Class 4A Washington state meets, and freshman Brayden Schultz made it to 4A state last year. Also coming aboard are redshirt freshman Aiden Pullen and junior Joseph Perkins. As a senior at Portland Christian High School in 2014, Perkins placed 18th in Oregon’s small-school state meet. Pullen, a redshirt freshman, ran in three Class 2A (medium / small school) Washington state meets, moving up all times, capped by a 13th-place finish as a senior in 2016.

FALCONS HISTORY From coach Bernard Buck who started the program, to legendary successors Ken Foreman and Doris Heritage who followed him, to the runners whose legs have carried it to success, Seattle Pacific cross country is known throughout the Puget Sound area, up and down the West Coast, and even around the as one of the best college programs to be found. Through the years, the Falcons have won a dozen conference team titles, 11 of those on the women’s side. The women also have two regional championships and 19 appearances at nationals: the first three under the umbrella of the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, and the last 16 as NCAA Division II members. The men have made nationals twice. Helping make all of that possible were wave after wave of talented runners who have donned Falcon uniforms. Joan Corbin became the program’s first national champion back in 1979. Bente Moe won it all in 1985. Then there was Jessica Pixler. She came to SPU to play soccer, but left that sport behind after her freshman year to focus exclusively on running. The results spoke for themselves: three straight NCAA titles (2007-08-09), four regional titles in a row, and three consecutive conference crowns. But the Falcons keep going beyond the finish line. They’ve been just as successful in the classroom, with numerous conference, regional and national all-academic awards to their credit. MEET THE
