Reflections from

the Rector’s Desk

5 June 2014

Dear Parents, Old Greys and Friends

We find ourselves already into the 9th week of our 2nd term with all grades involved in the vitally important mid-year examinations. We do trust that our Grey men will give a good account of themselves in this time of testing.

STAFFING Three new members of staff joined our team this term: Mrs Nelia Peters replaces Mrs Tilette Roelofse in our Afrikaans Department. Mrs Peters has a BA (Honours) degree in Afrikaans-Nederlands and is highly experienced in the teaching of her subject. We recently welcomed Mr Paul Blake as an additional member to the Grey staff. You will have read an article on him in The Herald of 12 May – “Solo adventurer tells of his epic trip across India to Everest Camp.” He has a Masters Degree from UCT and will be involved in the teaching of History. In 2008 he participated in the Beijing Olympic Games as a member of the SA Men’s Hockey Team. Mr Brent Janse van Rensburg officially took up his position with us on 1 April as Director of Rugby. He comes to us after an extremely successful stint in the same position at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. He commenced his duties at the University in 2011, and in three short years transformed what was a perennial underdog to a ‘Top 4’ University Rugby Club. Besides his duties at the NMMU, he served as Technical Director at Alan Zondagh’s Rugby Performance Centre in the Western Cape, Border’s Vodacom Cup Head Coach and Technical Director, as well as the Border Craven Week Coach.

Messrs Anton Scholtz, Tyler Botha and Carlo Heydenreich are all recovering after recently going ‘under the knife’. We wish them a full and speedy recovery.

Estate Manager, Mr Danny Daniel, and his Team, are congratulated for all their hard work in this regard. DERBY WEEKEND – PAUL ROOS IN STELLENBOSCH: 11-12 April We were delighted to meet up with many Old Greys (mostly current Maties) on Friday evening, 11 April, for some good and positive fellowship. A wonderful ‘vibe’ prevailed as members of staff and Old Greys mingled. Well done to our Executive Chairman, Mr Ian Pringle, for arranging this gathering. Our Grey men enjoyed a wide variety of cultural and sporting competition – which is exactly what these very special Derby Weekends are all about. There were mixed fortunes against some very strong and respected opposition. Who, however, will forget the magnificent come-back by our 1st XV (0-26) to emerge as eventual winners of the day (27- 26)? …and this as one of Old Mutual-Megapro’s televised Premier School clashes!

KES EASTER WEEKEND FESTIVAL: Thursday 17 April – Monday 21 April Our coaches, together with the 1st Rugby squad, travelled to Johannesburg to participate in this festival of Rugby. After the ‘high’ of a famous victory in Stellenbosch, our team succumbed to Menlo Park (26-27) in their first encounter. Other recorded results were: Parktown Boys’ High (62-3) and Rondebosch Boys’ High (46-26).

WILDEKLAWER FESTIVAL OF RUGBY: KIMBERLEY: Monday 28 April – Wednesday 30 April And if this wasn’t enough ….. our 1st Rugby squad was also invited to attend the prestigious Wildeklawer Festival in Kimberley. Here 2 games were played against

Reflections from the Rector’s Desk 2014-06-05 Page 3 of 16 challenging opposition – and we went down in both: EG Jansen (21-25) and Waterkloof (24-39). Our U14A’s and U15A’s secured good victories against the same opposition, while our U16A’s went down narrowly in both.

NMMU ALUMNI ASSOCIATION CONCERT: THURSDAY 8 MAY Our Symphonic Wind Band was invited to perform at this prestigious concert, and what an evening it turned out to be! This was held in the Dutch Reformed Church in Summerstrand. Our 80-strong Wind Band performed superbly and our musicians proved to be outstanding ambassadors for The Grey. Our men were also privileged to listen to other top musicians in action, as well as the world- renowned NMMU choir. Our Director of Music, Mr Shawn Lyon, presented the following:

The Selley Concert staged in the Feathermarket Hall was world-class and thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance. Congratulations to Mr Shawn Lyon, our Music Staff and musicians – take a well-deserved bow!

‘Half-a-thousand plus’ Old Greys attended the Old Grey Dinner on Thursday 22 May, and what a great evening it turned out to be! Congratulations to Mr Ian Pringle and his committees for the enormous amount of hard work that went into staging such a successful week. Old Grey National President, Mr Bryan Knox, spoke of and launched ‘The Grey Foundation’ which will very shortly be a

Reflections from the Rector’s Desk Page 4 of 16 2014-06-05 hot topic of conversation. The popular Old Grey ‘Boda’ Breakfast was very well attended in the Meriway dining room where much fun, laughter and reminiscing was enjoyed.

The Trooping The Colour Parade, held at 16:00 on Friday 23 May, and in perfect weather conditions, was spectacular! Our Military Band was magnificent! Sitting on the podium, one could not help but ‘swell’ with pride and gratitude while watching our cadets on parade – a positive tradition of which we are so proud. Old Grey and ‘Class of 1974’, Rear Admiral, Derek Christian (Director: Naval Logistics), did us the honour by taking the salute – and what an emotional and proud moment it was for him! Congratulations to Maj Steve van Niekerk (Officer Commanding), Lt Anton Scholtz, for commanding the parade and SSO Johann van Niekerk, together with all rank holders and troops. Mr Shawn Lyon, SO Joshua Benjamin, and Drum Major, Cameron Easton, also did us proud! Admiral Derek Christian wrote the following to me recently: ‘As you know, it was the 40th reunion for the Class of ’74, which, being my year group, made it that much more special for me. Standing on the podium, watching the young men of the Grey perform the most admirable Trooping Ceremony, I was very conscious of the fact that I was representing my entire year group of so many years ago. It was, therefore, an honour and a privilege, and, indeed, humbling for me to be standing there. The Cadets and Military Band truly epitomised the words of “tradition, excellence, opportunity” displayed on the School’s website. When they honoured me with the two General Salutes, and the salutes in the march pasts, it was I, in fact, who was saluting them!’

The Reunion Assembly was well-attended with Old Grey ‘year-groups’ packed into the gallery of the de Waal Hall – a nostalgic moment for so many as they ‘called back the past’!

Our Sporting and Cultural derby encounters against Wynberg Boys’ High proved to be highly successful and enjoyed by all. My sincere thanks are extended to many Grey parents who so willingly hosted the Wynberg contingent. Thank you all for your kindness and generosity. Mr Keith Richardson, Headmaster of WBHS, wrote the following: ‘We had more parents than normal travel up to Grey and the comments were flying about the condition of the campus, the manners of the boys, the hospitable reception and the efficient, polished and smooth organisation …. In addition, please pass on my thanks to all the Grey parents who put themselves out by hosting our boys. I hope that they were appreciative, well-mannered and helpful in their homes. The pressure is now on us to ensure that we reciprocate this wonderful hospitality in 2015 when Grey travel down to Wynberg. I would like to take this opportunity now to invite them to travel to Cape Town in order to share the Wynberg experience with their sons next year’.

NEW SPECTATOR STAND – PHILIP FIELD Congratulations to Mr EP van Niekerk for taking the initiative in driving this project and for securing generous sponsorships and donors resulting in little or no cost to the School. The stand is nearing completion and will be officially opened in due course. Our donors will be appropriately thanked on this occasion. Reflections from the Rector’s Desk 2014-06-05 Page 5 of 16 VOICES FESTIVAL – MONDAY 26 MAY A fantastic evening, during which 10 invited schools performed in front of a packed de Waal Hall – congratulations to Mr Pieter Rademeyer for his organisation. We were delighted to welcome singing groups and choirs from Framesby, Pearson, DF Malherbe, Grey Junior, Westering, Woodridge, Collegiate, Nico Malan and Riebeeck College. Our very own ‘Grey Voices’ were, once again, superb! We are incredibly proud of Mrs Ruth Lyon and her talented group of young men.
