Miami’s vice? Florida’s most colourful city is bonkers for its brightly painted beach huts

iami Beach is one of the best places in the world for art-deco M architecture – there are more than 800 splendid examples in the ever- popular Historic District. But these candy-coloured buildings aren’t the city’s only iconic structures: dozens of vibrantly painted lifeguard huts dot the beach. They’re such a famous part of the city’s landscape it feels like they’ve always been around, but in fact they only date back to 1992, after a hurricane destroyed the previous huts. The fi rst fi ve were designed by local architect William Lane, but most of the recent huts have been created by competition winners and communities. Photographer Peter Mendelson has made it his mission to photograph them all. “I’ve shot about 40 over the years, but new ones are being added all the time,” he says. “The city’s decision to incorporate diff erent styles and colours was an inspired one.” Fancy having a go yourself? “Sunset is the most beautiful time to do it,” says Mendelson. “The light hits the lifeguard stands at a low angle and produces a beautiful background.” CB mendelsonfi neartphotography.com
