JOB DESCRIPTION

This post calls for sound musical ability and a good voice for singing the priest’s part in the various forms of worship, recognising that the music of the Chapel is of “” style and of a very high standard. A broad liturgical knowledge and ceremonial sensitivity are required.

Within St George’s Chapel to be responsible to the Canon for the following duties: - The Minor Canon will be required to sing the Daily Office of Evensong, and will need to display a high level of competency in singing a wide range of choral settings common in cathedral usage. - The Minor Canon will, as a member of the College, preside at the Sung Eucharist from time to time on Sundays and on ’ Days. On occasion, this may include singing parts of the Eucharistic Prayer, according to the rite in Common Worship. The Minor Canon will also be required to sing elements of the liturgy of Holy Week. The services are sung in conjunction with the professional choir of St George’s Chapel, and occasionally with visiting choirs, so a well-developed sense of pitch, a polished style of delivery and vocal confidence are essential. - The Minor Canon will be an efficient administrator with organisational and proof- reading skills, including the preparation of Orders of Service for memorial services, festivals and special national events. On occasion the Minor Canon will be involved in the preparation of Royal or State services, including that of the Order of the Garter. Knowledge of IT systems and desktop publishing are essential requirements. The Minor Canon is assisted in these duties by a part-time liturgical assistant. - The Minor Canon will have proven pastoral skills, and will be expected to provide pastoral care to the staff and pupils of St George’s School, Windsor Castle. To this end, it is envisaged that the Minor Canon will spend time each weekday, within the school, building strong pastoral and professional relationships. As School Chaplain, the Minor Canon will plan and deliver some Assemblies, both in School and in the Chapel. There is no expectation of any teaching responsibility attached to this post. The Minor Canon will be responsible to the school’s Head Master for these duties. - The Minor Canon will enter fully into the life of the College of St George and the Castle community, and be a strong team-player.

The Minor Canon, working with the liturgical assistant is responsible for the following: a) Preparation of the weekly service sheet and any special orders of service needed for publication and inclusion on the College website. b) Rehearsing major services and festivals. c) Ensuring that the celebrants list for the weekday and Sunday Eucharist is completed and distributed in a timely fashion. d) Ensuring that the register of attendances is kept. e) Ensuring that robes, vestments, linen and service books are maintained in a satisfactory condition, working in conjunction with the Virger. f) Preparation of the monthly intercessions list. g) Arranging for the provision of visiting choirs, after fulfilling a careful selection procedure that usually includes the submission of a recording, which must be approved by the Director of Music or his assistant.

Responsibility for the above duties is under the general direction of the Canon Precentor.

Stipend and Holidays a) The stipend is currently that applicable to an incumbent in the Diocese of Oxford. b) The current annual holiday allowance is 90 days leave, 48 of which are weekly days off. c) Approved working expenses are reimbursed.

Accommodation Accommodation is provided in the Castle, free of rent and Council Tax. The & Canons take responsibility for maintenance, repair and decoration, and provide hot water and central heating at no charge to the occupant.

Administrative Regulations The Minor Canon will be required to comply fully with the College’s Administrative Regulations. In particular, it should be noted that: a) An occupier may not let the accommodation allocated, or share it with any third party paying a regular sum as rent. If he/she wishes to accommodate a third party, other than a member of his/her immediate family, on an expense-sharing basis, he/she must obtain the ’s consent through the Canon Steward. b) No domestic animal may be introduced into the College without the express approval of the Chapter, obtained through the Canon Steward.

Removal Expenses The Chapter will reimburse reasonable cost of removal on arrival, subject to two estimates being obtained.

Miscellaneous Information a) On admission to the College, a Minor Canon is required to make the Declaration of Assent, the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of Canonical Obedience and Observance of the Statutes of the College. b) The appointment as Minor Canon provides an opportunity for association with a choir of the highest quality (up to 23 choristers and twelve Lay Clerks) under the direction of the Director of Music.

This post will be for a period of four years, with a possible extension of two years, by agreement with the Dean and Canons.
