Golf: Sawgrass Country Club GOLF: SAWGRASS COUNTRY CLUB Sawgrass Country Club is a 27-hole championship golf course created by Arnold Palmer’s design partner, Ed Seay. Through the years, Sawgrass has been consistently recognized as one of the finest courses in the country and has been included in Golf Magazine’s Top 100 Courses in the U.S., Golf Digest’s Best Courses in Florida, and GolfWeek Magazine’s Top 100 Courses in America. Sawgrass Country Club hosted the PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP from 1977 to 1981 as well as the Senior PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP in 1987. Sawgrass Country Club will challenge every element of your game; constantly changing wind conditions makes the player excited to finish. Bring a camera, between the alligators, Bald eagles, and views of the Atlantic Ocean, you will want to capture your Sawgrass experience to show your friends. Each nine requires distance off the tee while putting a premium on accuracy. With water on 22 of the 27 holes, along with approaches into extremely well- bunkered greens, placement is of prime importance. In addition, the greens are shallow but wide, creating difficult hole locations. Sawgrass Country Club offers tee times daily from 7:30 to 8:15am and 12:45 to 1:30pm. Tee times are $1,200+tax for each group of four which includes greens fees, cart fees and forecaddie fee. Caddie gratuity not included; recommended $25 per person. The Ocean and Lagoon Course each feature a distinct seaside links flavor. Meandering lagoons, undulating fairways, elevated Bermuda greens protected by steep-faced bunkers and a prevailing sea breeze provide for every kind of shot making challenge imaginable. In 1939, the Ocean Course was selected to host the prestigious Ryder Cup Matches. Unfortunately, just months prior to the scheduled event, it was cancelled due to the onset of World War II. Five times in its history, the Ocean Course has proudly served as the site for the U.S. Open qualifying round. The cost per person on Ocean Course is $290, Lagoon Course $270. Rates include green fees, carts and range balls. Please use code: KIM17 Bruce W. Mohler, Head Golf Professional [email protected] Phone: 800.234.7842 ext. 7711 GOLF: MARSH LANDING COUNTRY CLUB The centerpiece of Marsh Landing is the 6,841 yard, par-72 golf course. The golf course was designed by Arnold Palmer’s design partner, Ed Seay. The course weaves through pockets of intracoastal marshes and towering pines that provide a year-round golf experience and home to an extraordinary array of wildlife. The cost is $220 per person plus sales tax. Rates include green fees, carts and range balls. Tee Times are accepted 30 days in advance. Please use code: KIM17 Ryan Mikesell, PGA Golf Professional [email protected] Phone: 904.285.6459 GOLF: KING & BEAR - WORLD GOLF VILLAGE The only collaboration between golf’s greatest legends, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, the King & Bear is set among pristine lakes, beautiful Loblolly pines, and stately oak trees. The King & Bear is located in St. Augustine, just a short drive from TPC Sawgrass. Each hole contains characteristics of both players to create a unique golf course. Measuring 7,279 yards from the stone tees and 5,119 yards from the green tees, this course is sure to challenge the skilled golfer while providing player-friendly conditions for the novice. This is a driver’s course, which should come as no surprise as both Palmer and Nicklaus wielded awesome power games in their primes. You’ll also experience the wide fairways of Nicklaus and the fast greens of Palmer. So enamored of the course he helped design, Arnold Palmer selected hole number 15 as one of his “Dream 18” in Sports Illustrated’s Preview to the Ryder Cup 2006. The cost per person is $169+tax. Rates include greens fee, carts and range balls. Please use code: KIM17 Jeff Hartman, PGA Director of Golf [email protected] Phone: 904.940.6010 GOLF: SLAMMER & SQUIRE - WORLD GOLF VILLAGE The Slammer & Squire course is located in the heart of the World Golf Village Resort, just steps from the World Golf Hall of Fame, in St. Augustine. This 18-hole championship resort course was designed by Bobby Weed with design consultants Sam “The Slammer” Snead and Gene “The Squire” Sarazen. These two men were innovators in the sport at their time and contributed, in many ways, to the sport of golf as we know it today. The course features two distinct nines with generous fairways, contoured greens and plenty of water hazards along with impressive views of the World Golf Hall of Fame. The cost per person is $129+tax. Rates include green fees, carts and range balls. • Swamp Thing Sawgrass CC, 'Monster' Host of the Players from 1977-81, Was an Equal Opportunity Destroyer
Swamp Thing Sawgrass CC, 'monster' host of the Players from 1977-81, was an equal opportunity destroyer. It messed with the minds--and swings--of all comers difficult home game: The Tournament Players Championship moved around for three years before commissioner Beman (left inset) relocated it to Sawgrass CC (14th hole shown). In its 1977 debut, the layout was a bear for all, including Nicklaus (right inset). By Ron Whitten Photos by Golf Digest Resource Center May 4, 2009 Long before there was TPC Sawgrass, there was the TPC at Sawgrass: the Tournament Players Championship (now the Players) at Sawgrass CC. The original Sawgrass, located across Florida Highway A1A from its successor, was a residential development/resort course pumped from a swamp hard against the Atlantic shoreline south of Jacksonville, designed with myriad humps and bumps by the late Ed Seay (before he became partners with Arnold Palmer) to resemble Troon, if Troon had palms and ponds. Sawgrass hosted the tour's marquee event for five years, from 1977 to 1981. We forget now just how ferocious Sawgrass was back then, how it set the tone for Pete Dye's subsequent TPC Sawgrass. Sawgrass was the frying pan to TPC's fire. It was Swamp Thing to Dye's Creature from the Black Lagoon. It was the storm before the tsunami. patience was a must: McCullough (top) started fast with a 66 and held on to finish second in '77. Floyd (middle) called second-round conditions "damn near unplayable." That was an appraisal with which J.C. Snead (bottom) wouldn't disagree--during the windblown day his hat hit his ball, causing a penalty.
