The significance of the costume is indicated especially by the sleeves and hoods. The bachelor's gown has pointed sleeves; the master's gown has long, closed sleeves; the doctor's gown has bell-shaped sleeves and velvet trimmings.

The bachelor's hood is three feet in length; the master's, three and one-half feet, and the doctor's, four feet. Hoods are lined with the color or colors of the institution from which the wearer received his or her degree. The colored velvet border of the hood, which is two inches, three inches, and five inches wide for the bachelor's, master's, and doctor's degrees, respectively, indicates the faculty or field of study to which the degree pertains.

President Terrell is wearing the new Washington State University presidential gown, first ever designed for a president of the university. It is made in the school colors, crimson trimmed in silver gray. The black cap has a gold tassel denoting presidential rank. The President and honored guests of the university are also wearing the new Washington State University hood. It is crimson and gray, and the velvet trim, instead of denoting degree by color, is black.

Additionally, Dr. Terrell is wearing the university's new Presidential Seal, a silver medallion which embodies the university's official seal on its face, and which bears his name on the reverse side. He was invested with the medallion at his inauguration March 17, at which time he also received the new robe.
