STAGE 1 is from Vancouver to Mexico, stopping at Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Tucson before crossing the border into Mexico. This stretch amounts to some 3,000km and will take the team the length of North America, passing such sights as the Golden Gate Bridge and the beaches of California.

STAGE 2 may prove to be the most dangerous leg of the journey, as they pass through Central America. From Mexico they will cross Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. This leg of the journey is approximately 5,000km and will contrast the chaos of Mexico City with the rainforests of Costa Rica.

STAGE 3 is the shipping leg, where they will ship the bus from Costa Rica to Ecuador as passage beyond Panama onwards into South America is blocked by the dangers of the Darien Gap. In this stage all participants will make their own way to Ecuador in time to meet the arriving bus.

STAGE 4 is the final yet longest stage of the journey – South America at last. From Ecuador the bus will skirt the west coast of Peru as far as the capital Lima. From there they head south-east through Bolivia, Argentina, Paraguay and finally into Brazil. This leg of the journey passes Matchu Picchu and Iguazu Falls, before arriving into the welcoming arms of Christ the Redeemer in Rio, and the start of the World Cup Finals.

1 osforth wouldn’t be Gosforth without its most famous export, Greggs, and you know the world is OK when that little electric train is buzzing overhead in Thorpe’s DIY. Depending on where youG draw the boundary, there are more than 20 pubs in Gosforth. There’s in excess of 30 eating places on the High Street alone, so the competition in food and drink is fierce. Luckily, Gosforth is a place with choice and we take pleasure in presenting some fine establishments to eat in and drink in and others where you can browse, buy and go.

Once found never forgotten could be the 18th Century inn’s mantra. It’s an inn in the old-fashioned sense – a delightful stopover for either a meal, a drink, a short rest and recuperation taking in the scenery, or a night or two’s accommodation in one of the four, well-appointed rooms. Comfort and ambience ooze from its two-foot thick sandstone walls and it’s easy to get wrapped up in the friendliness. Dipton Mill Inn FUN STUFF A All you’d want a country pub to be... THE DOGS Dipton Mill Road, Hexham NE46 1YA Blue’s adventures in beer Tel: 01434 606577 www.diptonmill.co.uk Our evening with the pub stand-up comedian last month got us thinking. 1. That is, me, Vilma the Weimaraner, Blackie the Labrador and that scruffy wee thing called Colin who comes in on a string rather than a lead. Actually, I’ve always thought Colin was a strange name for a dog, but who am I to complain when my name has got nothing to do with black dots? I should really be called Spot or Dottie or Blotch. Never mind, we started telling our own jokes under the table where The Master and The Mistress were hooting with laughter at stuff like: “Two cannibals were eating a clown. One says to the other, ‘Does this taste funny to you?’” Then there’s: “What do you call a fish without an eye?” “A fsh.” They’re in tears, slapping their thighs. “A man approaches a nightclub wearing nothing but jump leads. The bouncer takes one look at him and says: “OK, in you go, but don’t The only sign to look start anything.” Convivial Company is by for on Hadrian’s Wall “Do you get any of that?” says Vilma to the which North East artist? Scores on the Doors: Set in the shadows of Steel Rigg this country inn offers assembled canine company. It seems it’s all And where was he born? 3 Diamond accommodation, Real Ales, going over our heads. The situation did make us superb wines and excellent food. It is an ideal location to explore the land of Reivers, think up our own funnies though. Doggie funnies. Romans and Myths. Blackie started us off. “A dog walks into the job centre and asks what’s on offer. ‘A talking dog,’ the man behind the counter says. ‘I can get you

a position in a circus first thing in the morning.’

‘Circus? That’s no good,’ says the dog. ‘I’m a 93. at working still and Spennymoor, in 1919 born Cornish,

Norman Norman Royal. Café the and Abbotsford The Bar, Milne’s 2

Bardon Mill, Hexham, NE47 7AN plumber.’” 1 ANSWERS
