What is the East Sussex Youth Cabinet?

The East Sussex Youth Cabinet is a group of 11-18 year olds who campaign on the views and concerns of other young people in East Sussex.

Their role is to take forward issues voted in by young people during the Members giving presentations on Big Vote Election and work on County research at Cabinet meeting Council priorities. Your role on the East Sussex Youth Cabinet

If you are elected to the Youth Cabinet you will have the opportunity to: • Be a member for up to two years. • Be elected in UK Youth Parliament to work on national campaigns. • Represent young people by communicating their views to decision- makers about services provided for them in East Sussex. • Meet regularly: main meetings are approx every 6 weeks, at weekends, mostly in Eastbourne (subject to change), plus other meetings after school and during holidays (meetings supported by youth workers). • Attend fun residential visits – like this year’s trip to Hindleap Warren to work on campaigns and take part in outdoor activities. • Communicate with cabinet members and workers via email and social media, where possible. • Lead meetings and take on specialist roles, e.g. chairing meetings or co-ordinating web content. • Be creative in how you deliver your work, for example film-making. • Receive training, support and guidance. • Complete a Youth Voice Award. • Be an active member, committed to working on campaign issues and influencing the work of the County Council. All out-of-pocket expenses are covered by the Equality and Participation Team, including public transport costs to and from meetings, activities and events. ALL candidates MUST attend ONE candidate information session listed below Saturday 11 July, 10.00-15.00 at Priory School, Lewes, BN7 2XN Wednesday 15 July, 17.30-20.30 at Hastings Town Hall, Hastings, TN34 1TL Thursday 23 July, 16.00-20.30 at Archery Youth Centre, Eastbourne, BN22 7RR At these sessions you will: • Meet other candidates standing in the election. • Get support and advice from current Youth Cabinet members and the Equality and Participation Team staff. • Be given an ‘information pack’ that gives tips and advice about promoting yourself as a candidate in your school/college/youth centre. • Have your photo taken for the candidate poster that will be sent to schools/colleges and youth centres across the county. Have the opportunity to present your 45 second candidate statement to camera, if you were unable to send a film clip in byFRIDAY 26 JUNE (filming guidelines to follow after registration). • Be set an optional fun summer challenge, to keep you connected with all new candidates. • Have fun! If more than 15 people stand as candidates in your area there will be a selection process.

19 REMEMBER TO APPLY BY 12 JUNE IF YOU WANT TO STAND AS A CANDIDATE Declaration I acknowledge receipt of the information regarding ESYC, UKYP and ESCC, and consent to my son/daughter, named above, participating at ESYC, UKYP and ESCC related events and other subsequent events to which they may be invited, including in any subsequent publications and media interviews. I agree to ESCC Children Services staff giving permission for my child to receive any medication as instructed and any emergency dental, medical or surgical treatment including anesthetic or blood transfusion, as considered necessary by the medical authorities present. I undertake to inform UKYP and Participation Team staff, in the event of any changes to my child’s fitness during their time of the project. I have ensured that my son/daughter understands, as far as reasonably possible, that it is important for his/her safety and the safety of the group as a whole that any rules and instructions given by staff in charge are obeyed. The ESYC, UKYP & ESCC will not tolerate the use of illegal drugs or alcohol at any ESYC, UKYP or ESCC related events. In the event of my son/daughter having consumed or being in possession of drugs or alcohol, I agree to them being sent home immediately. I will make arrangements to collect them from the event at my own expense. Also in the event of my child wanting to return home at their own request, or for medical reasons I will make arrangements to collect them from the event at my own expense. I understand that while ESCC Children’s Services staff are in charge they will take all reasonable care of the young people, and unless they are negligent they cannot be held responsible for any loss, damage or injury suffered by any child arising during ESYC, UKYP and ESCC events. I agree to my son/daughter being transported in an ESCC Minibus or by car, by Children’s Services staff, and I understand that these workers have passed ESCC minibus driving tests and have the relevant insurance to transport young people.
