The Club continues to be in a flourishi~_Q_on_~iti~m~_ Six_new _____ . -- . _ --------nrembers have Jmnecrauring-theyear,-and two have lapsed. We much regret to announce the death of Mr. Stanley, who has been an active member for several years. In spit~ of the unfavourable conditions as to weather, which prevailed dt;iring the year, the ~umber of plants contributed were only 27 beJow those received at the previous distribution. It is however to be hoped that, as the Distributor remarks, the number of con~)'ibutors will be greater in future. There is no better test of the activity of the Club than that shown by the number ot parcels and specimens sent .in. A fair number of specimens were sent to the Referees from time to time for examination, and the progress made in Hepatics especially, is very encouraging. · No doubt increased attention will be given to this subject when Mr. Maevie;a:1?1!f~1{11ndbook will be published. It is expected to be issued in July. We may add that at no time in the history of the Club was there a larg~r number of rare and interesting plants sent for distribution. The 2nd Edition.of the Hepati~ Census Catalogue will appear some time after June. AU records should he sent to Mr. W. Ingham, ·B.A., 52 Haxby Road, York, by the end of that month. It is· U:nfortunat.e that both Club Desiderata List and Note Book should have miscarried for the second time in four years. Much inconvenience was caused, and members are requested to exercise a little more care in future. D. A. JONES, April, 1912. Secretary. MEC Section II 1911 Page 4 4 REPORT OF DISTRIBUTER {1911). The distribution was made during March 1912, when parcels of specimens were sent to all the twenty seven members. Con tributions, however, were received from only sixteen of them. This is an unusdally small proportion of contributors, and it is ._much to be hoped that next year more of the members will be able to send in spe-uimens. ~e number of packets received was sligntly ·--- smaller than in the previous year. Most of the packets and speci mens were good, but in some cases it would have been better if greater care had been used in removing foreign matter, and in washing. It would be a help to me, and would save members the trouble of making up useless· packets, if they would send me their lists of oblata ·with their desiderata catalogues. I could then pick out the kinds wanted. A number of interesting species were sent in~ amongst others a collection of mosses from the Jura, gathered and named by Professor C. Meylan, from Mr. Bellerby, a number of Swiss and American plants from Mr. Rhodes, and many rarities from North Wales and elsewhere contributed by Mr. Jones. It is impossible to mention all the interesting plants, but a selection will be found in the list which follows. Some specimens were found to be wrongly named or otherwise to need remark. Notes on these are given in the list, and will, perhaps, prevent the same mistakes occurring again. It would be likely to bring rare species to light, if members would send to the referees or to me, specimens of anything they cannot name or which seems to be at all abnormal. Mr. Owen has acted as referee for Hepatics, Mr. Sherrin and Mr. Travis respectively for Sphagna and Harpidia, and Mr. Jones for all other mosses. In addition to these referees, the club has to thank Mr. J. A. Wheldon for naming several of the more critical Harpidia and for supplying valuable notes on them, and Mr. W. E. Nicholson for settling some difficulties among the other mosses. Without the help of the referees it would have been quite impossible for me to verify the specimens properly. The Club has again received parcels of interesting mosses from Mr. H. N. Dixon and Mr. W. E. Nicholson, containing numerous American and Continental as well as British specimens, and also a collection of Swiss specimens of mosses rare in Britain or which rarely fruit with us from Mr. E. Cleminshaw. These donations greatly enhanced the value of the parcels distributed, and the Club is much inde-bted to these gentlemen. In the following list vice-county records which appear to be new are marked with an asterisk. G. B. SAVERY, April, 1912. Distributer.
