5 The Lessons

Intergenerational Homily The Rev. Canon Kathy Hopner Canon for Formation

The frst lesson can be found below, but will not be read aloud today.

1 Kings 2:10-12; 3:3-14

David slept with his ancestors, and was buried in the city of David. The time that David reigned over Israel was forty years; he reigned seven years in Hebron, and thirty-three years in Jerusalem. So Solomon sat on the throne of his father David; and his kingdom was frmly established.

Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of his father David; only, he sacrifced and offered incense at the high places. The king went to Gibeon to sacrifce there, for that was the principal high place; Solomon used to offer a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, “Ask what I should give you.” And Solomon said, “You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant my father David, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward you; and you have kept for him this great and steadfast love, and have given him a son to sit on his throne today. And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David, although I am only a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. And your servant is in the midst of the people whom you have chosen, a great people, so numerous they cannot be numbered or counted. Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, able to discern between good and evil; for who can govern this your great people?”

It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. God said to him, “Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches, or for the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, I now do according to your word. Indeed I give you a wise and discerning mind; no one like you has been before you and no one like you shall arise after you. I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honor all your life; no other king shall compare with you. If you will walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your life.”

6 THE PSALM Conftebor tibi Psalm 111 Remain seated.

Hallelujah! I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, * in the assembly of the upright, in the congregation.

Great are the deeds of the Lord! * they are studied by all who delight in them.

His work is full of majesty and splendor, * and his righteousness endures for ever.

He makes his marvelous works to be remembered; * the Lord is gracious and full of compassion.

He gives food to those who fear him; * he is ever mindful of his covenant.

He has shown his people the power of his works * in giving them the lands of the nations.

The works of his hands are faithfulness and justice; * all his commandments are sure.

They stand fast for ever and ever, * because they are done in truth and equity.

He sent redemption to his people; he commanded his covenant for ever; * holy and awesome is his Name.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; * those who act accordingly have a good understanding; his praise endures for ever.

7 THE READING Ephesians 4:1-16

A reading from Paul's letter to the Church in Ephesus.

Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil. So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be flled with the Spirit, as you sing and and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL John 6:51-58

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to John. People Glory to you, O Christ.

Jesus said, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my fesh.”

The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his fesh to eat?” So Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the fesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Those who eat my fesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for my fesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Those who eat my fesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever.”

Deacon The Gospel of our Savior. People Praise to you, O Christ.

THE SERMON The Very Rev. Matthew Woodward Dean of the Cathedral

A period of silence is kept after the sermon for refection.

9 THE NICENE CREED EOW 1 p. 53 All stand, as able.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucifed under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorifed, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

OFFERTORY SENTENCE Ephesians 5:2

The Celebrant says Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, an offering and sacrifce to God.

OFFERTORY SONG My God is an awesome God Keith Hampton Sung by the Celebration Choir

My God is an awesome God. Hallelujah! Let's give him the praise. My God is an awesome God. His wondrous acts let us proclaim. The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof, the world and they that dwell therein. My God is an awesome God. Hallelujah! Let's give him the praise.

God sent me to a distant land, and he showed his greatness and majesty. I was an empty cup and he made me full, and he ordained me to do his will.

God is good; he's always right on time. Let's take the time to glorify the Lord. Hold on and never let go. He is our friend indeed. Let's tell the world that he is our God.

For he hath founded it up on the seas, and established it upon the food. Oh, my God is an awesome God. Hallelujah! Let's give him the praise. Lift!

Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and the King of Glory shall come in! (The Lord is strong and mighty in battle! Send me. Anoint me. Use me, Lord!) My God is an awesome God. Hallelujah! Let's give him the praise!

15 The Great Thanksgiving EOW Eucharistic Prayer 3 The People remain standing or kneel, as able

Celebrant God be with you People And also with you.

Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Holy One.

Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Holy One our God. People It is right to give God thanks and praise.

All thanks and praise are yours at all times and in all places, our true and loving God; through Jesus Christ, your eternal Word, the Wisdom from on high by whom you created all things. You laid the foundations of the world and enclosed the sea when it burst out from the womb; You brought forth all creatures of the earth and gave breath to humankind.

Wondrous are you, Holy One of Blessing, all you create is a sign of hope for our journey; And so as the morning stars sing your praises we join the heavenly beings and all creation as we shout with joy:

17 The Celebrant continues Glory and honor are yours, Creator of all, your Word has never been silent; you called a people to yourself, as a light to the nations, you delivered them from bondage and led them to a land of promise. Of your grace, you gave Jesus to be human, to share our life, to proclaim the coming of your holy reign and give himself for us, a fragrant offering.

Through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, you have freed us from sin, brought us into your life, reconciled us to you, and restored us to the glory you intend for us.

We thank you that on the night before he died for us Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, gave it to his friends and said: “Take, eat, this is my Body, broken for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper Jesus took the cup of wine, said the blessing, gave it to his friends and said: “Drink this, all of you: this cup is the new Covenant in my Blood, poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

And so, remembering all that was done for us: the cross, the tomb, the resurrection and ascension, longing for Christ’s coming in glory, and presenting to you these gifts your earth has formed and human hands have made, we acclaim you, O Christ:

All Dying, you destroyed our death. Rising, you restored our life. Christ Jesus, come in glory!

The Celebrant continues Send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts of bread and wine that they may be to us the Body and Blood of your Christ. Grant that we, burning with your Spirit’s power, may be a people of hope, justice and love.

Giver of Life, draw us together in the Body of Christ, and in the fullness of time gather us with all your people into the joy of our true eternal home.

Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, we worship you our God and Creator in voices of unending praise.

All Blessed are you now and for ever. AMEN.

18 THE LORD’S PRAYER

As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray,

All

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen

A PRAYER FOR SPIRITUAL COMMUNION from the Order of Julian of Norwich

We will not pray this prayer aloud in the Cathedral today, we offer this prayer for use at home.

In union, O Christ, with the faithful of your Church where the Holy Eucharist is now being celebrated, we desire to offer you praise and thanksgiving. We present to you our souls and bodies with the earnest wish that we may always be united to you. And since we cannot now receive you sacramentally, we beseech you to come spiritually into our hearts. We unite ourselves with you and embrace you with all the love of our souls. Let nothing ever separate you from us. May we live in you, and may you live in us, both in this life and in the life to come. Amen.

20 COMMUNION SONG GC 841 The Living Bread of God Sung by the Celebration Choir

Jesus, the Living Bread of God. Jesus, the Saving Cup of Christ. Every time we eat this Bread, every time we drink this Cup, We proclaim Your glory, until You come again.

You are the Bread of Life. If we come to You, we will never be in need. If we believe in You, we will never thirst And we will live forever.

You are the life of the world. If we come to You, we will never know death. If we eat this Bread, we will be renewed And we will live forever.

You are the living bread, our bread from Heaven, our food from above. If we eat and drink, we will be like you, and we will live forever.

You are the Living Christ. If we come to You, we will see the face of God. If we die with You, we will rise again, And we will live forever.
