COACH TRIP TO CLAYDON HOUSE AND STOWE LANDSCAPE GARDENS 25th JUNE 2016 Claydon House is an invitation into the home and lives of the Verney family. It is acclaimed for its magnificent marquetry staircase and intricate carvings framing the vast collection of portraits, a lavish interior and unique ‘talking portraits’. Visit the rooms occupied by Florence Nightingale, displaying memorabilia and letters giving an insight into her reform work within the house and local community. Enjoy the costume exhibition and contemplate the extraordinary Chinese room – apparently you will ‘love it or hate it’. Viewing is free flow and knowledgeable volunteers are on hand to enrich your experience.

The small church alongside contains many memorials to Sir Edmund, chief standard bearer to Charles I, slain at the Battle of Edgehill.

There is a new café (not NT) for refreshments, a gallery, shops, and garden to wander around. The lake is a 10 minute stroll away. We propose leaving for Stowe, 9 miles away, at 1.00pm.

For lunch and the afternoon we arrive at Stowe’s New Inn visitor centre with its café and shops from where a 10 minute walk (or free electric buggy ride) leads to Capability Brown’s first expansive landscape garden showcasing many statues, temples and monuments sited around the gardens enhancing the many walks and lakes. Capability Brown was married in St Mary’s church and there is an exhibition to celebrate his tercentenary this year. Free short introductory tours are usually available (dependent upon volunteers). We propose to leave at 4.30pm.
