Awards and Honours Reporting about the awards and honors won by our faculty and students is always a proud moment for the Director. It gives me enormous sense of pride to share with you that Professor Sanjay G. Dhande, former Director of the Institute and Professor Manindra Agrawal (CSE) have been conferred Padma Shri by the Government of India. The many prestigious scholarships and awards received by our students have been a matter of pride and pleasure for us. This year 8 Japanese TODAI scholarships were awarded to IITK students.

The 70-year-old scientist known for his expertise in DNA fingerprinting rose from a humble background to be later popularly known as the “Father of Indian DNA fingerprinting”. His death has been widely condoled and has left a deep void among the scientific fraternity. Born on 5 July 1947, Dr Singh worked in the field of DNA fingerprinting technology in India, where he was He also worked in the areas of the molecular basis of sex determination, Wildlife conservation forensics and evolution and migration of humans. I was to chair a meeting on that day away from my workplace and it took a while to compose myself to carry on the work. Personally, I owe Dr. Lalji Singh a lot to for my professional growth. Of the 12+ years I spent at CCMB, Dr. Lalji Singh was the Director for more than 9 years. Having worked with him so closely in those years, I thought I would express my thoughts after few days to avoid emotional outbursts. Abdul Kalam visited and dedicated the Laboratory for the Conservation of Endangered Species (LaCONES) to the Nation for the Cause of Conservation on 1 February 2007. He also released the book You Deserve, We Conserve — A Biotechnological Approach to Wildlife Conservation authored by Dr M.W. Pandit, Dr S. Shivaji and Dr Lalji Singh and published by I K International, New Delhi. India is home to enormous biodiversity. However, destruction of forest areas is causing fragmentation of habitats of wild animals and is threatening the very survival of big cats like lions, tigers and leopards, especially because these animals require huge area for sustaining a certain minimum number. It was registered under the Societies Act in the then princely state of Mysore and the memorandum of registration was signed by the late Profs. V. Subramanian, V. N. Patwardhan and C. V. Natarajan, who were leading personalities in the scientific firmament during that period. The Society played a crucial role during the Second World War by advising the Government on the utilization of indigenous biomaterials as food substitutes, drugs and tonics, on the industrial and agricultural waste utilization and on management of water resources. The other areas of vital interest to the Society in the early years were nutrition, proteins, enzymes, applied microbiology, preventive medicines and the development of high quality proteins from indigenous plant sources.
