The Foundation is in its strongest position since it was founded in 1996. We continue to support and produce high quality programs that build upon our overarching pillars of patient access, empowerment, and clinical research. Rudy Anderson, Angela Perillo, Caitlin Mahoney, and Andrew Gillen comprise our core staff, each with a different focus and amazing passion and teamwork. Robert Musacchio is the CEO of both CHEST and the CHEST Foundation. He is intensely engaged and supportive of the Foundation. A new President is given the opportunity to influence strategy and vision. My goal is to enhance recognition and awareness of our many great programs, projects, and other accomplishments. This year, Hans Lee, MD, from Johns Hopkins, led a team to Uganda to implement bronchoscopy and thoracoscopy by implanting the equipment and training five physicians to provide advanced airway and pleural procedures. This project was just one leg of long-term enduring efforts to improve the provision of respiratory health care to this population. Uganda is a low income country with a largely rural population of 37 million, so the impact of this CHEST Foundation community service grant is enormous. The Foundation will continue to prioritize empowerment of communities in need throughout the new year. The Uganda effort, another impactful program, was led by Dana Hickman, a nurse practitioner. She identified the need in Forsyth County, Georgia, to empower patients with COPD, along with their families and caregivers. Forsyth County is a rapidly growing county near the Blue Ridge Mountains with much of its growth in senior housing, assisted living, and multigenerational homes. Many of the over 500,000 Georgia residents with COPD reside there. This program developed a center-of-excellence for COPD that prioritizes education, compassionate support, and personal guidance in addition to high quality medical care. These are just a few examples that I find particularly exciting. They represent only a small portion of the CHEST Foundation activity that includes additional community service and clinical research grants, disease-specific tool kits for patients and caregivers, and 80 patient education publications that have been translated into multiple languages. In 2019, the Foundation funded 80 travel grants to bring early career chest physicians to our national meeting where they engaged in Foundation meetings and events. Through additional grant support and distribution, the Foundation delivers on its goal of supporting research – including research on specific diseases and research to assess and optimize patient-provider interactions. We have enjoyed great success with our fundraising events. This year, Dr. Doreen Addrizzo-Harris chaired the Kentucky Derby event in New York City. The Feldman Family Foundation hosted their annual Poker Night in Chicago and also supported Casino Night at our annual CHEST meeting in New Orleans. We held our first golf outing in Chicago. Kim French and Patrice Diamond hosted a “Girls Night Out” event at a boutique in Chicago. At the time of this writing, we are preparing to attend the Golden Era of Erin Popovich event in San Antonio, Texas. This is the largest fundraising event in our history and represents the public kick-off of the Erin Popovich Endowment that supports patient access, empowerment, and research directed toward interstitial lung disease. The Foundation continues to produce The Lung Health Experience in cities across the nation. Participants undergo spirometry screening and obtain lung health education. This is one of many ways that the Foundation has demonstrated and will continue to realize its goal of access – which means giving patients, families, and caregivers access to medical specialists for information and second opinions, and removing barriers that patients face in obtaining the tools and knowledge they need to improve their health. It is a privilege to support the CHEST Foundation; 95% of our dollars directly support our programs. I encourage you to join me, along with the Foundation staff and Board of Trustees, in our ongoing efforts to crush lung disease, as we avail our patients to access, empowerment, and research. An easy way to start is by logging onto chestfoundation.org/donate. I can be contacted at any time via email and mobile number below. I wish each of you a joyous holiday season, as we appreciate our many blessings and embrace opportunities to help those who are less fortunate. Sincerely, Ed Diamond, MD, MBA, FCCP [email protected] +1 (847) 652-5622 December 2019 1 SPOTLIGHT The People for Whom Erin Popovich Fights t’s a December evening at the AT&T Center some personal insight into the Endowment’s Iin San Antonio, Texas. Coaching Articles : Eric Musselman File For Coaches Jackson makes Hall of Fame on principle By Roscoe Nance, USA TODAY Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson heads the 2007 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame class, which will be inducted Saturday in Springfield, Mass. The group includes University of North Carolina men's coach Roy Williams, Louisiana State University women's coach Van Chancellor, the 1966 Texas Western University men's team, referee Marvin "Mendy" Rudolph and international coaches Pedro Ferrandiz of Spain and Mirko Novosel of Yugoslavia. Jackson, 61, has won nine NBA championships as a coach — six with the Chicago Bulls and three with the Lakers — tying Hall of Famer Red Auerbach's record. He has coached some of the NBA's greatest players, including Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen with the Bulls and Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal with the Lakers. Jackson gets players to buy into his coaching philosophy, which is influenced by Native American and Eastern beliefs. "The great thing about Phil is the way he has handled players," Hall of Famer Magic Johnson said. "He has a different style, too, that old Zen thing. I love him because he never gets too high and never gets too low and always wants to help the guys grow as men. He teaches them basketball and also teaches them outside the sport." One of his more renowned strategies is handing out books for players to read during road trips. "He's trying to get players to see that there's more to life than the NBA and your performance today," said NBA TV analyst Steve "Snapper" Jones.

Michelin restaurants and fabulous wines: Inside the secret team dinners that have built the Spurs' dynasty Apr 18, 2019 "POP WANTS TO talk to you." The server is speaking to a man named Jeremy Threat -- and from the tone in his voice, something is clearly amiss. Threat hustles back to the main dining room of Spataro Restaurant & Bar, an Italian restaurant in Sacramento, California, that has been overrun by the San Antonio Spurs. Players, coaches, management, ownership. All are seated along a handful of long, rectangular tables. The room is pin-drop silent. Some 40 pairs of eyes are trained on Threat, the venue's 29-year-old general manager and wine director. Seated at the head of one of those tables, beside a window that offers a sweeping view of the California state capitol across the street, is Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. "Explain this," Popovich barks to Threat, brandishing the wine list. Threat is perplexed. "How did you do this?" Popovich asks. "This list has some of my favorite wines. Did you guys just have this? You've got to explain yourself." Threat explains himself. He explains how hours earlier, when he had learned that the Spurs might be coming in, he'd recalled a Wine Spectator magazine feature that had listed many of Pop's favorite wines. He explains how he'd called a nearby friend who possesses a deep cellar, how his friend had hauled in about 120 bottles worth roughly $50,000 in total, how Threat had built the list that Pop now holds of 54 wines: the legendary 1990 Chateau d'Yquem; the acclaimed Masseto in 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2001 vintages; the iconic 1994 and 1995 Ornellaia.

Republic of the Philippines SENATE OF THE PHILIPPINES Pasay City '14 FEB -5 P5 :48 SIXTEENTH CONGRESS First Regular Session S. B. No. 2107 Introduced by SENATOR JUAN EDGARDO "SONNY" M. ANGARA EXPLANATORY NOTE The Filipino is a sports-loving nation with a distinct affection for basketball. The robust professional basketball league in the Philippines, the PBA, is the oldest running professional basketball league in Asia and is the second oldest in the world, next to the NBA. Along with several semi-professional, collegiate and recreational leagues all around the country, it is safe to say basketball is the country's premier sport. The recent modest ascent in FIBA standings is indicative of the development of Philippine basketball in the international scene, which ought to be sustained. The Philippine basketball stakeholders including the Filipino cagers have contributed to such positive trajectory of Philippine basketball in the Asian and world arenas. International tournaments allow countries to be represented by naturalized players subject to certain conditions, i.e. number of naturalized players in a team. Other countries, while ranking higher than the Philippines, have opted to take advantage of this naturalized-player rule, meant to equalize the world basketball landscape historically ruled by American and European countries, with great benefit. This will not be the first time the Philippines will naturalize athletes in order to represent our country in international tournaments. In 1985, with three naturalized players, Dennis Still, Jeff Moore and Chip Engelland, the Philippines, represented by the RP-Northern Consolidated Corporation, won the William Jones Cup and the ABC Championships (now known as the FIBA Asia Championship).

  • The Island of Kawhi: Leonard Gives Second Wind to Spurs' Dynasty
Next Page The Island of Kawhi: Leonard gives second wind to Spurs' dynasty by Lee Jenkins Posted: Tue Mar. 15, 2016 This story appears in the March 14, 2016, issue of Sports Illustrated. To subscribe, click here. His name evokes an island, warm and remote, enchanting and unspoiled. Though Kawhi Leonard was not named after Kauai, the garden isle on the northwest tip of the Hawaiian archipelago, he believes his father liked the sound of the place. Kauai is lush and bountiful, yet subdued compared with some of its overstated cousins to the south. Kawhi has never been. Someday he'd like to go. He was the baby of the family, minded by four older sisters, who stood in long lines to buy his Air Jordans and prophesied in home videos his athletic feats. At seven, Kawhi interrupted an annual physical to inform his pediatrician that he planned to play in the NBA. "Do you know how many kids come in this office and say that?" the doctor smirked. It is possible that Kawhi has not uttered an audacious word since. He quietly observed his older sisters, immersed in their adolescent dramas, and avoided any of his own. He called coaches and parents sir and ma'am. He handed footballs to officials after touchdowns. He passed basketballs to friends instead of shooting them himself. "Why do you do that?" his mother, Kim Robertson, once asked him. Leonard watched Come Fly with Me, a glossy 1980s documentary about Michael Jordan, until his eyes ached. But the promise of movies, commercials, stratospheric stats and double-pump highlights—trappings of success in the post-Jordan age—were not what enticed him.
