Greetings Friends — We’ve finished another wonderful year of empowering women through educationthanks to your ongoing support. Due to your generosity, we were able to help over 166 women fulfill their dreams of pursuing post-secondary education this year. They are leading the way for their families to attain self-sufficiency and build a better life.

CREATE A SUSTAINABLE ORGANIZATION We were the fortunate recipients of four Endowed Scholarships this year. We are grateful to Sarajane Love, Mimi Sodhi, Heather Kleiner, and Sue Bailey for investing in our long term sustainability. An Endowed Scholarship is the gift that keeps on giving, changing the trajectory of a woman’s life as well as that of her family.

GROW THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Emerge Scholarships was an Atlanta based scholarship fund for nontraditional women students in Georgia. We are happy to report that Emerge Scholarships has now become part of the Jeannette Rankin Women’s Scholarship Fund. We are over the moon excited to have this wonderful program as part of JRF. We started the Emerging Scholars Finish Line Fund to help Georgia women with retroactive scholarships (for shortages they had with their tuition or fees.) We were able to fund 34 women across the Technical College System of GA with grants ranging from $40 to $700.

DEVELOP A NATIONAL PRESENCE AND IDENTITY FY19 was a banner year in that we received our first multi-year, multi-partner grant from the Strada Education Network. We received $82,800 to fund scholarships specifically for cybersecurity studies at Bay Path University. The total grant involved nine partners and was funded for $1.5M.

STRATEGIC PLAN FOR FY20-23 The Three Pillars remain the same. The big news is that after three years of increasing the number of scholarships provided we’ve made a commitment to spending the next four years increasing the amount of the scholarship award. The cost of a college education has risen 85% since 2002, the year we started granting $2,000 scholarships. In shaping our Strategic Plan, the Board of Directors decided to raise the amount of a scholarship by $500 a year for the next four years. Next year the scholarship award will be $2,500 and will increase by $500 a year up to $4,000 a year in FY24.

We continue our journey with you as our partners. Many many thanks,

ALEXANDRA KILPATRICK ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP - ENDOWED BY DONNA ZENOR Alexandra Kilpatrick, better known as Alix, lived a life in which she focused on pursuing her dreams, from working at a theater in Paris, France, to opening a yoga studio in New Zealand, to flying for American Airlines. She was passionate about having a full life, and as she got older, she realized that she wanted to leave a legacy helped to empower others to live a full life. She asked her cousin and childhood best friend, Donna Zenor, to research organizations that “enhance the lives of women through education,” leading to the discovery of Jeannette Rankin Women’s Scholarship Fund. Unfortunately, Alix died suddenly and was unable to leave the funds directly to JRF, but that didn’t stop Donna from doing everything she could to make sure Alix’s wish was honored.

“Alix is one of the most generous spirits to have ever inhabited this earth and the scholarship fund which the donor is establishing upon her Alix Kilpatrick death should be counted as one of the many gifts which are her legacy,” says Donna. The Alexandra Kilpatrick Endowed Scholarship Fund, which we received in 2016, has been transformative, allowing us to empower more women. We are so grateful that Alix cared so deeply about the women we serve and that Donna found us. This gift will transform the lives of JRF Scholars and their families for years to come.

GEORGE AND MARY BAILEY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP - ENDOWED BY SUE BAILEY

Sue Bailey is one of JRF’s Founders. She was one of the first women to attend and graduate from UGA Law School. She was inspired to endow a scholarship in her parent’s names because they sponsored a scholarship at JRF each year when they were alive. She invested funds inherited from them into an Endowed Scholarship in honor of their commitment to JRF.

George and Mary Bailey were the parents of Susan R. Bailey. Both George and Mary attended college during the depression, giving them a deep appreciation for higher education. Lack of funds Mary Bailey forced Mary to withdraw from a private woman’s college to attend a state school. She graduated in 1934 from Murray State College with a degree in Mathematics. George attended Georgia Institute of Technology on the co-op program, graduating with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1936. As part of the co-op program, George worked as a bellhop and an at the Fox Theater.

Both Mary and George utilized their college degrees, Mary as a high school math teacher and George as a technical sales person in the aluminum industry. He served in the Army in World War II and the Korean War, designing tanks, then continuing his service in the Army Reserves until his retirement as a Lt. Colonel.

George Bailey Remembering their time in college when scholarships were minimal and grants and loans for education were not available, George and Mary donated funds for JRF scholarships during the 1980s and 1990s, honoring their daughter. In their memory, Susan created The George and Mary Bailey Endowed Scholarship in May 2019.

DR. HARDEEP SODHI ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP - ENDOWED BY MIMI SODHI Mimi Sodhi has been a long time friend of JRF, serving as a Board Member from 2008-2010. She returned to Athens in 2019 after working abroad and immediately re-engaged with JRF as a Volunteer Racial Justice Facilitator. We are grateful for her gift in memory and honor of her mother Dr. Hardeep Sodhi.

Dr. Hardeep Sodhi left India in the late 50’s and came to the United States to join her husband and do her Medical Doctor Residency. While in the states, she gave birth to their daughter Mimi. At that time in America, she and her family experienced a lack of cross cultural understanding and acceptance. Ultimately, they decided that America was not the place for them. She and her husband decided to return to India, and stopped over in London on the trip home. While there, her husband was offered a partnership in a medical practice, so they made Dr. Hardeep Sodhi the decision to stay in London. Dr. Hardeep Sodhi became a General Practitioner MD and served the people of London for many years. She gave birth to two more daughters and lived out a full life in London.

Dr. Sodhi traveled the world and instilled in her daughters the desire to create understanding and acceptance across cultures. She died on August 6, 2017. In her honor, her daughter Mimi Sodhi created the The Hardeep Sodhi Endowed Scholarship Fund, a scholarship for JRF scholars pursuing degrees in the helping professions of nursing, social work, childcare, or teaching.

EMERGING SCHOLARS FINISH LINE FUND

Emerge Scholarships was an Atlanta based scholarship fund for nontraditional women students in Georgia. In FY19 Emerge Scholarships became part of the Jeannette Rankin Women’s Scholarship Fund. We are over the moon excited to have this wonderful program as part of JRF. We started the Emerging Scholars Finish Line Fund to help Georgia women with retroactive scholarships (for shortages they had with their program.) We were able to fund 34 women across the Technical College System of GA with grants anywhere from $40 to $700. We look forward to deepening our relationships with the women we serve in Georgia in general and in the Atlanta metro area specifically.

$11,254 in scholarships awarded to 34 women 4 graduates in May 2019 100% employment rate for all Spring graduates 97% persistence rate for 2019 awardees Average age of awardees is 37 years old

I can’t begin to tell you how many sleepless nights I’ve had worrying about how my tuition was going to get paid… You gave me the opportunity to continue my education.

This scholarship means the world to me… I’m able to continue on this semester.

I will forever be grateful for the Emerging Scholars Finish Line Fund. Thank you for making a difference in my present life thus adding more value to my future!
