These arrest amounts to blatant violation of citizen’s rights to freedom of expression and voicing dissent, and is clearly a move to target individuals working for rights of the marginalised sections of society, and to produce a chilling effect on voices of dissent.

    Students’ Research Global Media Journal – Indian Edition/ISSN 2249-5835 Sponsored by the University of Calcutta/ www.caluniv.ac.in Summer Issue / June 2012 Vol. 3/No.1 REPRESENTATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN INDIAN PRINT MEDIA: A COMARATIVE ANALYSIS Rupsayar Das Student, M.A. Second Year Department of Journalism and Mass Communication University of Calcutta,India Email: [email protected] Abstract: This study aims at investigating print news discourses on a relatively recent act of violence perpetrated on women in India, which evoked a nation-wide non-violent protest, popularly known as „The Pink Chaddi‟ Campaign, 2009. We considered some of the top English national and local daily newspapers (online editions) for analyses; using advanced computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) called Leximancer v3.5. We aimed to explore the frames in the news discourse through intra-media analyses, and perform comparative inter-media analyses between national- and local newspaper corpora. The „concept maps‟ produced by Leximancer v3.5, in the unsupervised-mode, threw light on the nature of the news discourse on the Campaign. We found slight evidence that some of the newspapers tried to downplay the VAW and took a detour towards political blame-game. These results somewhat reflected the results of Caputi et al. (1992), O‟Connor (2002) and Wetschanow (2003).     www.livemint.com 2018-01-01 Gordon Brown Protectionist and “bring-back-control” movements will continue to flourish so long as globalisation remains leaderless, lacks a human face, and advances like a runaway train careening out of control. Sadly, there are good reasons why globalisation has become a dirty word for millions of people. The pillars of the 30-year-old Washington Consensus have been collapsing. Most now agree that free trade without fair trade creates millions of losers, in addition to some winners. Unregulated capital flows, especially short-term speculative flows, can destabilize economies. And rising social inequalities can be bad for growth. These realizations are punching holes in the free-market fundamentalism— focused on liberalization, deregulation, privatization, tax-cutting, and the shrinking of the state—that has prevailed in policymaking circles over the last few decades. Ten years after the global financial crisis, we can now accept that individuals and corporations acting solely in their own self-interest do not always serve that of the public. And yet a new economic paradigm for the global age still has not emerged. In the resulting vacuum, protectionism, anti-trade populism, and illiberal—often xenophobic—nationalism have gained ground, fueled by anxieties about stagnant wages, technological unemployment, and rising insecurity. Make no mistake: those left out and left behind by globalisation are actively searching for something and someone to articulate their discontent and shelter them from change. But neither nationalism— whether that espoused by US President Donald Trump or its other manifestations—nor overly formulaic or elaborate systems of global governance will meet the needs and desires of people for prosperity, security, equity, and self-determination.

BY KRITIKA A & NIKITA AGARWAL The hearing on the petition Romila Thapar and Ors. vs. Union of India and Ors., known as the Bhima Koregaon case continued on September 19, 2018 at the Supreme Court heard by Chief Justice of India Deepak Misra, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice A.M. Khanwilkar. In the long arguments which lasted till 4 o’clock with a one hour lunch break, both sides—for the five plus five activists’ arrested on June 6th and August 28th in connection to Bhima Koregaon violence under FIR No. 04/2018 and the prosecution, the State of Maharashtra put forth their best arguments. Senior counsel for the activists Abhishek Manu Singhvi opened his argument by pointing towards the first FIR filed by Anita Salve, a Dalit woman and eye witness to the violence unleashed by right wing extremist groups: “Anita Salve, an eye witness to the violence of 1st January 2018, lodged FIR 2/2018 at P.S. Pimpri on 2nd January 2018, stating that violence was unleashed by a mob armed with swords, rods etc. against the Dalits and specifically names Sambhaji Bhide, Chief of Shivajinagar Pratishthan and Milind Ekbote, Chief of Hindu Janjagaran Samiti, as the perpetrators and conspirators of the attack.” He emphasised that a belated FIR was filed by Tushar Damgude, who is an Intervenor before this Court, on January 8th, eight days after the incident and seven days after the first FIR.
